Celebrity advocacy is a curious phenomenon. It occupies a significant proportion of the public domain, but does so without engaging particularly well with much of the public. Yet this may not matter very much. Many people at the core of advocacy, and in political and business elites, simply do not notice any lack of engagement. In these circles celebrity advocacy can be remarkably effective. Celebrity Advocacy and International Development examines the work of celebrity advocacy and lobbying in international development. Its purpose is to understand the alliances resulting, their history, consequences, wider contexts and implications. It argues that celebrity advocacy signals a new aspect of elite rule. For populist celebrity advocacy can mark, ironically, a disengagement between the public and politics, and particularly the public and civil society. Recognising this poses new challenges, but also presents new opportunities, for the development movement. This book gives students and researchers in development studies and media studies a wealth of original empirical data, including interviews across the NGO sector, media and celebrity industries, newspaper analysis, large surveys of public opinion, and focus group research.

Thomas J. Wood, Kentuckian, graduated fifth in his West Point class in 1846 and joined the staff of General Zachary Taylor. The Mexican War was just beginning and Wood fought in several battles after which he served under General Winfield Scott in Mexico City. In 1861, Wood became a brigadier general of volunteers and began his Civil War service with the Army of the Cumberland, with whom he fought in every campaign and most of its major battles. Wood has never before been the subject of a full length biography but is well known for a notorious lapse of judgment resulting in a Confederate breakthrough at Chickamauga that shattered the Union right flank and threatened the survival of the Army of the Cumberland. It is a moment in the war still argued about. Wood learned from his mistake, became a better general from that time on (notably at Missionary Ridge and Nashville), and redeemed himself in the eyes of his fellow officers and his civilian superiors.

He is promoted to Commandant of the Marine Corps and he occupies the highest USMC office in Washington D.C. The historical events of 1937 through 1967, are carefully followed. The imagination of the author provides rich characters in powerful settings from the battlefields of Mexico to those in America The time old love story between a man and woman is woven throughout the book when the general meets the daughter of John Randolph Adams. The Adams are those from the time of the Mayflower, two US Presidents and statesmen of America. The general and Miss Adams are like oil and water. He can not stand her, and she is convinced that this is the man she will marry. Scenes are set carefully with attention to accurate research of the low country of South Carolina as well as our Nation's Capital circa 1837 - 1867. The People's Standard History of the United States written by Edward S. Ellis and published by Western Book Syndicate and copyrighted by the Woolfall Company have provided background materials, maps of the period and needed information on how the federal government was organized and functioned during this period of our history. Dear Readers, This is a story of Americas admirals and generals from 1833 to 1877. These were trying times in the history of our country. In 1822, a young man was accepted into the Carlisle Military College of South Carolina. Another was accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. One became an admiral, the other a general. One lived in Port Royal, South Carolina, where he worked on his father's shrimp boats. The other was born on a plantation south of Beaufort, South Carolina and sailed aboard his father's merchant ships, they were both in tune with the sea. So when the two institutions asked for their selection of military service, they choose the Navy. One became an admireal, the other a brigadier general in the United Staes Marine Corps. This is a work of fiction. Its location was inspired by my home which I leased on Dataw Island from 2003 through 2008. The next barrier island in the chain is called Pollowanna Island and if was chosen as the fictional setting for the Caldwell family plantation. To my knowledge, there was never a Cladwell living in Beaufort. The fictional account is based, in part, on the lives of the Barnwell and Bull families who lived during these times. They owned the homes described along Bay Street. And, yes, they did have a Vice Admiral in the family. The historical events which are outlined in this book all took place. The dates and locations are accurate, but the characters are the products of my overactice imagination. Some persons mentioned, however, are real. Too often descriptions of detectors focus on the "what" and not the "why." This volume aims to elucidate how the requirements of the physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) define the detector environment. In turn, the detector choices are made to adopt to that environment. The goal of LHC physics is to explore the mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking. Because of the minuscule cross-sections which need to be explored, 0.1 fb, the LHC needs to provide 100 fb-1/yr, or an instantaneous luminosity of 1034 / (cm2 sec). With a bunch crossing interval of 25 nsec, well matched to detector speeds, there will be 25 events occupying each bunch crossing. Thus the physics requires fast, finely segmented, low noise and radiation resistant detectors which provide redundant measurements of the rarely produced electrons and muons. To achieve those goals, new ground was broken in constructing the A Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) and Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detectors in the vertex detectors, tracking systems, calorimetry, strong magnets, muon systems, front end electronics, trigger systems, and in the data acquisition methods used.

In Hertfordshire Soldiers of The First World War the authors explore a series of individual case studies of Hertfordshire men who served in various theaters during the First World War, all of which had been uncovered as part of the Herts At War community project. This unique collection of largely unknown accounts includes stories from the Western Front, Gallipoli, Salonika, Mesopotamia, East Africa, Egypt and even Russia in the fight against the Bolsheviks in 1919. The Herts At War team uncovered many letters and objects in the course of their research, including men who were Victoria Cross winners to those whose courage or bravery went unrecognized, as well as stoicism on the Home Front. One of the most moving of these surrounds a photograph which was found in the hands of Sergeant Percy Buck as he lay fatally wounded in a shell hole in 1917. On the back of the photograph of his wife and young son he had written his address and asked for whoever found the image to post it to his loved ones in the event of his death. Sergeant Buck would have assumed it would be a British comrade who would find the photograph, but the person who recovered it was a German soldier who subsequently sent it on to the grieving, but grateful, family. The war memorials of Hertfordshire contain the names of over 23,000 men and women who gave their lives whilst in the service of their country during the Great War; some of their tales are uncovered here. Indeed, the poignant collection of stories, anecdotes and artifacts revealed in this book bring the First World War to life in an unusual and highly moving fashion.
