The word perspicacity is not only a favorite of author Dan Kerstein, it is his mantra as well. The simple definition of this word is acute mental awareness-the ability to be constantly aware of one's physical surroundings. Over the course of his life, Kerstein has learned that successful businesses are run by 'survivalists", people who can observe and understand what is going on in the 360-degree circle that surrounds them at any given time. That's perspicacity at its best. Unfortunately, Kerstein has had to deal with a gaggle of fools and know-it-alls throughout his career who have inspired the thoughts in I'm Retired: Now I Get Even on subjects such as the following: Entrepreneurship: The art of hiring and firing oneself on a regular basis Egos and intelligence: The 97% rule The twenty-first century's greatest oxymoron: Customer Service Sex, lies, and brownnosing: AKA, the truth about climbing the corporate ladder There was a long list of people Kerstein did not wish to thank for this book, but that didn't seem quite fair because they provided the cannon fodder that makes up most of the chapters. So instead, he thanks them for being stupid, ignorant, egotistical, maniacal, harmful, fatuous, indifferent, macabre, remorseless, and/or all-around jerks.

Thermoacoustic Combustion Instability Control: Engineering Applications and Computer Codes provides a unique opportunity for researchers, students and engineers to access recent developments from technical, theoretical and engineering perspectives. The book is a compendium of the most recent advances in theoretical and computational modeling and the thermoacoustic instability phenomena associated with multi-dimensional computing methods and recent developments in signal-processing techniques. These include, but are not restricted to a real-time observer, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), dynamic mode decomposition, Galerkin expansion, empirical mode decomposition, the Lattice Boltzmann method, and associated numerical and analytical approaches. The fundamental physics of thermoacoustic instability occurs in both macro- and micro-scale combustors. Practical methods for alleviating common problems are presented in the book with an analytical approach to arm readers with the tools they need to apply in their own industrial or research setting. Readers will benefit from practicing the worked examples and the training provided on computer coding for combustion technology to achieve useful results and simulations that advance their knowledge and research. - Focuses on applications of theoretical and numerical modes with computer codes relevant to combustion technology - Includes the most recent modeling and analytical developments motivated by empirical experimental observations in a highly visual way - Provides self-contained chapters that include a comprehensive, introductory section that ensures any readers new to this topic are equipped with required technical terms
Large-Scale Simulation: Models, Algorithms, and Applications gives you firsthand insight on the latest advances in large-scale simulation techniques. Most of the research results are drawn from the authors’ papers in top-tier, peer-reviewed, scientific conference proceedings and journals. The first part of the book presents the fundamentals of large-scale simulation, including high-level architecture and runtime infrastructure. The second part covers middleware and software architecture for large-scale simulations, such as decoupled federate architecture, fault tolerant mechanisms, grid-enabled simulation, and federation communities. In the third part, the authors explore mechanisms—such as simulation cloning methods and algorithms—that support quick evaluation of alternative scenarios. The final part describes how distributed computing technologies and many-core architecture are used to study social phenomena. Reflecting the latest research in the field, this book guides you in using and further researching advanced models and algorithms for large-scale distributed simulation. These simulation tools will help you gain insight into large-scale systems across many disciplines.
Development of the Nervous System, Fourth Edition provides an informative and up-to-date account of our present understanding of the basic principles of neural development as exemplified by key experiments and observations from past and recent times. This book reflects the advances made over the last few years, demonstrating their promise for both therapy and molecular understanding of one of the most complex processes in animal development. This information is critical for neuroscientists, developmental biologists, educators, and students at various stages of their career, providing a clear presentation of the frontiers of this exciting and medically important area of developmental biology. The book includes a basic introduction to the relevant aspects of neural development, covering all the major topics that form the basis of a comprehensive, advanced undergraduate and graduate curriculum, including the patterning and growth of the nervous system, neuronal determination, axonal navigation and targeting, neuron survival and death, synapse formation and plasticity. - Provides broad coverage of concepts and experimental strategies - Includes full color schematics and photographs of critical experiments - Outlines the molecular and genetic basis for most developmental events - Written at a level that is appropriate for advanced undergraduates and beyond - Includes designs of critical experiments that are easy to understand
