Al and his best friend Owen are peering into an old sea trunk in Al s attic when, all of a sudden, they find themselves sitting on a small rocky outcrop in the middle of the ocean. Before they know it, a strange, three-legged cat joins them, seemingly scared out of its wits. And then, to top it all off, a pirate ship sails in to rescue them! The boys hop aboard The Booty, where they meet Captain Gunner, Mahoot, his cabin boy, and Slicer, the cook. Mahoot tells them the cat s name is Snakeboot, a legendary pirate cat that once belonged to the terrifying Vicious Victor, and that they are sailing the Dragon Blood Islands in search of treasure. Bewildered, Al and Owen realise they must have travelled back in time. Al then comes across a map showing where the infamous Death Diamond is hidden, and Captain Gunner and his crew decide to go in search of it. However, they don t realise they are being followed by the nasty one-eyed Snotty Nell, captain of The Tormenter. While Snotty takes them all hostage, with a bit of quick thinking Al later helps Captain Gunner to overthrow her. He finds the diamond and wins the approval of Captain Gunner. Unfortunately, Snotty Nell later steals all of Captain Gunner s treasure, leaving him poor once again. But Al has a surprise for him, which he manages to hand over just before he and Owen find themselves back home again...

Al and Owen are back in the Dragon Blood Islands, but this time they are kidnapped by the nasty Captain Blacktooth and equally unfriendly cabin boy Flash. Captain Blacktooth wants to sell the boys to Stanley Spong, but just as he s sailing The Revenge over to town, Snotty Nell and her crew close in for the attack! A long and horrifying battle ensues, and Snotty sails off with Captain Blacktooth s treasure. Angry, and blaming Al and Owen for his misfortune, Captain Blacktooth decides to maroon the boys on Snake Island, where they will no doubt starve to death. Here, however, they come across Grenda, Snotty Nell s daughter, and they convince her to smuggle them aboard The Tormenter so they can make it into town. In town, they finally find Captain Gunner, who is very happy to see them. He wants to sail to Sabre Island to see Mahoot s grandfather, who looks after the swimming elephants, as well as search Alleric Castle for treasure. Alleric Castle, Al and Owen discover, was once the home of Prince Alleric, who lived long ago and was last seen chasing the meanest pirate in the world, Vicious Victor. The pirate had stolen the prince s magical sabre, which gave the prince power to fly anywhere in the world. Al is intrigued, seeing as he and the prince share the same name... When Al and Owen finally get a chance to search Alleric Castle, they find more than they bargained for...but before they can explore this further, they find themselves being transported back home. Al and Owen decide to revisit the Dragon Blood Islands. This time they find themselves in the Elephant Temple on Sabre Island, where they meet up with Mahoot and his grandfather. Before long, however, they are being attacked by the evil Captain Blacktooth, who wants to steal the one remaining emerald eye of the elephant idol. However, the emerald is missing and Grandfather refuses to tell Captain Blacktooth where it is. Just then, a harrowing shriek erupts from the idol, prompting Blacktooth and his crew to run for their lives. The boys and Grandfather are also scared, but soon realise the shrieking is coming from Snakeboot the cat, who has time-travelled to the island with none other than Hally, Al s sister. Hally is frightened, but Al quickly reassures her. That night, Grandfather and the children encounter Snotty Nell stealing the baby elephants from the island. With Captain Gunner s help, they manage to rescue them, but when they return to Sabre Island, they find Grandfather gagged and tied to a tree. Captain Blacktooth is trying to get into the elephant s graveyard to steal all the ivory. Finally, after helping Grandfather drive Blacktooth away, Al gets a chance to explore Alleric Castle, where he finds a treasure map. Gunner says it shows there is treasure on Cannibal Island. But as Gunner s crew is getting ready to sail in search of the treasure, Al, Owen, Hally and Snakeboot find themselves back home...
