For most of my life, I have been infected by wanderlust. When I see an airplane flying overhead or a ship on the horizon, I can’t help but ask myself, “I wonder where they are going?” Life, as it has evolved, has led me on a journey that is beyond my imagination. I participated in one of the most polarizing events in U.S. history, the Vietnam war. I also was a participant in, quite possibly, the most important event in U.S. labor history, the 1981 air traffic controllers’ strike. The second of those events led me to an amazing adventure. I lived outside of the United States for nine years. I have crossed the Pacific Ocean 11 times. I have crossed the Indian Ocean seven times. I have crossed the Atlantic Ocean more times than I can count. I have been on six of the seven continents and visited more than 90 countries. Along the way, a brilliant and beautiful young woman decided to become my partner and accompany me on that journey. This is the story of that adventure.

Dan Roodt is a well-known Afrikaner author and commentator in South Africa. In this essay he explores the country's "new" English identity which is founded on the old colonial identity of the nineteenth century when the redcoats invaded the Cape of Good Hope. Althouth there are only 1 million "real" English people in South Africa, thanks to the global Anglo-Saxon Empire, the country is anxious to model itself on present-day England and America. Political correctness and anti-racism are but two of the fads slavishly followed by South Africa's media, academic and political elite. Although the country tries to recreate itself as an inverted mirror image of its so-called "apartheid" past, more and more it is looking like a giant bantustan, with casinos and Afro-kitsch shopping centres being built everywhere. But also its English authors and critics still regard England as "home" and aspire to become global sovereign individuals. So no-one is really "South African" anymore. Roodt situates the extreme social violence that has characterised South Africa since 1994 also within the ambit of its identity crisis. A society in which fathers are absent, where people speak no defined language but various forms of broken English, will produce the very high murder rates that South Africa has. Afrikaners, who have their own centuries-old identity forged within the country, are suffering from the revolutionary new ersatz "English" identity being imposed on everyone. Afrikaans institutions have been appropratiated by mostly white and radical English-speakers regard Afrikaners as foreigners or interlopers in their own country. The cause of the revolution in South Africa has been the radical children of conservative British immigrants in the country who were re-educated at the very left-wing universities and so espoused "Boerehaat" or hatred of Afrikaners, along with the ideas of sixties-America and cultural Marxism. The author analyses Nelson Mandela's stature in the wider English-speaking world where he is seen is a kind of demi-god or king.

This sensibility is genuine, for not only is high-latitude ?eldwork arduous with many locations seldom or never visited, but there remains much fundamental knowledge yet to be discovered about how the polar regions interact with the global climate system. The range of opportunities for new discovery becomes strikingly clear when we realize that the high latitudes are not one region but are really two vastly di?erent worlds. The high Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and is home to fragile ecosystems and unique modes of human habitation. The Antarctic is a frozen continent without regular human habitation, covered by ice sheets taller than many mountain ranges and surrounded by the Earth’s most forbidding ocean. When we consider global change as applied to the Arctic, we discuss impacts to a region whose surface and lower atmospheric temperatures are near the triple point of water throughout much of the year. The most consistent signatures of climate warming have occurred at northern high latitudes (IPCC, 2001), and the potential impacts of a few degrees increase in surface temperature include a reduction in sea ice extent, a positive feedback to climate warming due to lowering of surface albedo, and changes to surface runo? that might a?ect the Arctic Ocean’s salinity and circulation.

Colonel Frank Wolford, the acclaimed Civil War colonel of the First Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, is remembered today primarily for his unenviable reputation. Despite his stellar service record and widespread fame, Wolford ruined his reputation and his career over the question of emancipation and the enlistment of African Americans in the army. Unhappy with Abraham Lincoln's public stance on slavery, Wolford rebelled and made a series of treasonous speeches against the president. Dishonorably discharged and arrested three times, Wolford, on the brink of being exiled beyond federal lines into the Confederacy, was taken in irons to Washington DC to meet with Lincoln. Lincoln spared Wolford, however, and the disgraced colonel returned to Kentucky, where he was admired for his war record and rewarded politically for his racially based rebellion against Lincoln. Although his military record established him as one of the most vigorous, courageous, and original commanders in the cavalry, Wolford's later reputation suffered. Dan Lee restores balance to the story of a crude, complicated, but talented man and the unconventional regiment he led in the fight to save the Union. Placing Wolford in the context of the political and cultural crosscurrents that tore at Kentucky during the war, Lee fills out the historical picture of "Old Roman Nose.
