In After the Post–Cold War eminent Chinese cultural critic Dai Jinhua interrogates history, memory, and the future of China as a global economic power in relation to its socialist past, profoundly shaped by the Cold War. Drawing on Marxism, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, and feminist theory, Dai examines recent Chinese films that erase the country’s socialist history to show how such erasure resignifies socialism’s past as failure and thus forecloses the imagining of a future beyond that of globalized capitalism. She outlines the tension between China’s embrace of the free market and a regime dependent on a socialist imprimatur. She also offers a genealogy of China’s transformation from a source of revolutionary power into a fountainhead of globalized modernity. In recent decades, China has transitioned from an inherently agricultural country to an emerging economic titan with a vast transportation network that befits its newly globalized status. Through this fast-paced economic development, the country soon became a nation of drivers. By 2019, the country had 260 million automobiles and 397 million drivers, most of whom were only years from being a novice. In 2019 alone, another 26 million new drivers joined the Chinese roadways. At the same time, China encountered many traffic-related problems: overcrowded urban areas, a deteriorating environment, the chaos of traffic signs, the building boom due to urbanization, and the pressure of traffic management, among others. Historically, China was never a country adept at traffic and transportation. Despite this, it has been trying to catch up with the world’s pace and to welcome its guests from across the globe. This book zeroes in on the authentic discourses in Chinese traffic by demonstrating the interaction between traffic signs and their users (specifically the new drivers who are unfamiliar with traffic contexts, driving, or the Chinese language). A Choice Outstanding Academic Title The White Lotus War (1796–1804) in central China marked the end of the Qing dynasty’s golden age and the fatal weakening of the imperial system itself. What started as a local rebellion grew into a serious political crisis, as the central government was no longer able to operate its military machine. Yingcong Dai’s comprehensive investigation reveals that the White Lotus rebels would have remained a relatively minor threat, if not for the Qing’s ill-managed response. Dai shows that the officials in charge of the suppression campaign were half-hearted about the fight and took advantage of the campaign to pursue personal gains. She challenges assumptions that the Qing relied upon local militias to exterminate the rebels, showing instead that the hiring of civilians became a pretext for misappropriation of war funds, resulting in the devastatingly high cost of the war. The mishandled demilitarization of the militiamen prolonged the hostilities when many of the dismissed troops turned into rebels themselves. The war’s long-term impact presaged the beginning of the disintegration of the Qing in the mid-nineteenth century and eruptions of the Taiping Rebellion and other uprisings. The White Lotus War will interest students and scholars of late imperial and modern Chinese history, as well as history buffs interested in the warfare of the early modern world.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) technology plays a vital role in diverse fields such as education, industry, national policy and cultural development. This is true not only in developed countries but also in rapidly developing countries. HCI technology is not only a relatively new industry in its own right; it also plays a central role in the integration of most, if not all, areas of expertise, including newer technologies, established industries, research and development fields and cultural activities. The evolution of HCI can be viewed analytically using a basic model which consists of three elements: the human, the computer, and the interaction between the two. First, regarding the human, ease-of-use is making computers (or artefacts) accessible to more and more people, including the young, the elderly, the physically or visually handicapped. A new research view, universal usability (or universal design), is emerging. Second, the computer, which interacts with humans, has come a long way from the mainframe to the compact personal computer. Now the locus of computation is shifting from the PC to personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet computers and electronic whiteboards. Wearable computers, which may be worn like watches, glasses, clothing, and the like, are also greatly changing the traditional image of computers. Third, the interaction between humans and computers has developed from batch processing, through command lines, and on to the WIMP GUI which manipulates objects displayed in a bit map display using pointing devices such as a mouse. In recent years pen-based input interfaces, voice input interfaces, and non-verbal user interfaces (body language user interfaces which use gesture or eye gaze input), have each been actively researched.
