Development in Unity: A Compendium of Works of Daasebre Prof. (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, Volume1 is a compilation of research works, published articles, speeches, seminar presentations, addresses, and radio broadcasts written by the author over the past 40 years. In these articles, the author, a distinguished statistician, a university don, a UN commissioner, a Vice-Chancellor of the World Academy of Letters, and a traditional ruler, combines his rich scholarly background and his deep understanding of complex traditional, national and international issues in addressing some challenges that face humankind. The book is divided into nine sub-themes, namely, 1) Education, 2) Governance, 3) Statistics, 4) Population and Health, 5) Natural Disasters, 6) Oil and Gas, 7) Chieftaincy and Culture, 8) Religion, and 9) Economy. The theme of this book, Development in Unity, is derived from the mission of the Akwantukese Festival, which is, Development in Unity for the Welfare of the People. The Akwantukese Festival, was instituted in 1997 by the Omanhene, Chiefs, and People of New Juaben to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boatengs enstoolment as Omanhene of New Juaben in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Festival commemorates the migration of the Juabens and their allies from Asante to the Eastern Region of Ghana in the 1870s. The basic goal of Akwantukese is to promote the socio-economic progress of the people through education, traditions, and customs. It further serves as a tourist attraction for people all over the world. Akwantukese also reinforces the ancestral unity between the citizens of Asante and Jew Juaben for peaceful co-existence. The articles in this first volume have been carefully selected to emphasize these ideals thereby creating a gift for posterity. As you enjoy these collections look out for the next volume in the series which is scheduled to come out very soon.
Development in Unity Volume Two represents an eclectic repertoire of over forty years exploits and profile of a renowned international scholar and an eminent cultural African leader, Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, to inspire a new generational philosophy of development. In this treatise, the author, a distinguished authority in statistics , a United Nations Commissioner, and recipient of several national and international awards, including recognition by the American Biographic Institute as one of the five hundred best thinkers of the twenty-first century, seeks to blend scholarship and culture as mutually inclusive prerequisites to underpin contemporary models in addressing pertinent development challenges. The book pioneers an alternative innovative root-based development model to harness the potential of indigenous institutions of governance in ensuring self-sustaining inclusive local economic development as a hedge against poverty, insurgency mobilization, migration, and radicalization in response to the demands of contemporary global development challenges. It elucidates the truth that development has manifold aspects, dealing with every aspect of human life, and addresses its intrinsic challenges from an eclectic and multidisciplinary perspective. In this respect, the book covers diverse areas ranging from entrepreneurial collaboration for sustainable micro progress, gender sensitive statistics to democratic governance through credible elections. Other areas include harmonization of tradition and modernity in the chieftaincy institution, integration of ECOWAS statistical systems, space science and satellite technology, oil and gas exploration, construction of poverty profiles, religion, and the cocoa industry. Every section of the book is filled with leadership lessons to inspire a new development approach and intellectual assertiveness. This very penetrating book fills an important knowledge gap between theory and experiential learning in the development process. It is a melting pot of lessons for all readers.
This Volume, a scholarly piece of development thoughts, discusses in Part One the new concept of development embracing a much more inclusive view of increasing the welfare of societies followed by a critical examination of the various development theories and practices that underpinned the global development order over the greater part of the 20th century in both classic and contemporary contexts. It then discusses the unique contribution of the author’s award-winning Root-based Model to the development process The Root-based Model provides a desirable bridge between the dominant growth-concentrated development pattern and the alternative development paradigm. In addition to it’s institutional networking dynamics utilizing the power of shared information for sustainable community development, the model resolves the critical issue of integrating the citizens sector into the national development process through a genuine participatory approach. Part Two encapsulates various research works and papers over the years by the author that keep resonating on the development landscape and illuminate much of the discussions in Part One. The book urges developing countries to adopt solutions suited to their cultures and local constraints instead of importing ‘best practices’ which may not fit into the key policy issues of development in the local context.

Development in Unity Volume I, the first of a three-Volume scholarly series, is a compilation of research works and other exploits spanning over four decades written by Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, an eminent African Traditional Ruler, a global statistician and professional economist, to revolutionize development thinking and inspire a new order of development. In this exposition, the author seeks to blend scholarship and culture as mutually-inclusive prerequisites to draw lessons and models in addressing pertinent development challenges that face humankind, particularly in Africa and regions of growing economies. The book espouses the concept of community development from a cultural perspective and inspires a new model of community development from a root-based approach which represents a major paradigm shift from the traditional top-down approach to development. This community development model would essentially change the current global approach and inspire a new debate on community development which would make it a desirable blueprint for community development practitioners and students of development across the world. The book is filled with life-tested and leadership lessons to inspire a new development order and intellectual assertiveness and provides a useful and rare source of material for academic institutions, Chief Executives, diplomats, researchers, lawmakers, and other officials in both public and private organizations.
