At Big Bass Lake and Mobile Homes, a development "planted in the hill and abandoned like a crop gone bad," whiskey-soaked Weezal Peterson has worked hard to forget his past-and largely succeeded. Over the course of the story, several intertwining narratives-including a young woman's search for a husband after being accused of murdering the previous two; the meteoric rise of a colonial-era ink company; and the wavering convictions of a failed writer and farmer who expresses his despair by cooking fragrant meatballs-come crashing together in a rural Pennsylvania trailer park. In the conflagration, Weezal's history, and his future, are revealed to both the reader and to Weezal himself. Smart and sweet, poetic and wild-and delectably raunchy-A Smile Shy spares us none of the details of these characters' sorrows and horrors: poverty and addiction, loneliness and domestic violence. And yet every page is infused with both a crackling humor and an immense tenderness.

Now with a new chapter! A STUNNING BAEN BOOKS DEBUT. A brilliant Americana flintlock fantasy novel set in a world of Appalachian magic that works. Sarah Calhoun is the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Elector Andrew Calhoun, one of Appalachee’s military heroes and one of the electors who gets to decide who will next ascend as the Emperor of the New World. None of that matters to Sarah. She has a natural talent for hexing and one bad eye, and all she wants is to be left alone—especially by outsiders. But Sarah’s world gets turned on its head at the Nashville Tobacco Fair when a Yankee wizard-priest tries to kidnap her. Sarah fights back with the aid of a mysterious monk named Thalanes, who is one of the not-quite-human Firstborn, the Moundbuilders of the Ohio. It is Thalanes who reveals to Sarah a secret heritage she never dreamed could be hers. Now on a desperate quest with Thalanes to claim this heritage, she is hunted by the Emperor’s bodyguard of elite dragoons, as well as by darker things—shapeshifting Mockers and undead Lazars, and behind them a power more sinister still. If Sarah cannot claim her heritage, it may mean the end to her, her family—and to the world where she is just beginning to find her place. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Throughout the tropical world, especially in South and Southeast Asia, tropical America, Africa and Oceania, there exists a range of forest garden farming systems. These are small, low-input, but productive and sustainable family units of highly diversified trees, palms, bushes and vines, with few conventional field crops or livestock. Providing a survey of these systems around the world and an in-depth analysis of the farms around Kandy, Sri Lanka, this book offers an economic and ecological description and evaluation of this ancient agroforestry system and its relationship to a wide range of global agro-development and environmental problems. Guided by a table that lists some 30 socio-economic and social criteria by which all farming systems can and should be evaluated, the book presents persuasive evidence supported by comprehensive references. It also examines historical and archaeological findings in order to assess the role these tropical forests played in the general adoption of agricultural farming.
From D.J. MacHale—the #1 New York Times bestselling author and co-creator of the popular Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark?—comes STORM, the exhilarating, action-packed sequel to SYLO: After a harrowing escape from Pemberwick Island, Tucker Pierce and his surviving friends—Tori, Kent, and Olivia—have finally reached the mainland, only to find that no one is left. That’s not their only sickening discovery. Moments before they are attacked by another of the mysterious black planes, they investigate one’s wreck and are horrified to find that it bears the logo of the U.S. Air Force. This can only mean one thing: the United States is at war with itself—the deadly technology of the Air Force against the brute force of the Navy’s SYLO unit, which still holds Pemberwick Island and its residents captive. Tucker must lead his friends to safety, but his head is spinning. How can the Air Force be perpetuating such genocide against not only its own citizens, but the world? What is SYLO’s role in this, and why did Tucker’s parents betray him by allying with SYLO, whose commander, Captain Granger, killed Tori’s father at point-blank range? And what did his mother mean when she told him to trust no one? Tucker, Tori, and friends set off cross-country on a quest for answers and, for Tucker, vengeance. But as one highway gives way to the next—and one death-defying escape precedes another—Tucker soon realizes that “trust no one” doesn’t just mean the U.S. military.
This book relates three years (1921-1924) in the life of Gilbert Bagnani, a young Italian archaeologist in Greece, based on his letters to his mother in Rome, at first as a non-partisan observer of, and later as an active participant in, some of the most tumultuous events in modern Greek history.
If Wallis Simpson had not died on the operating table in December 1936, Edward VIII would not have been King of England three years later. He would have abdicated for “the woman he loves,” but now, the throne beckons. If Henry Bannister’s car had not careered off the Colombo back-road in the summer before the war, Cynthia Kirkpatrick would never have found out about The Faction. It is autumn 1939, and everything in history is just as it was. Except, that is, for the identity of the man in Buckingham Palace and the existence of a secret organization operating at the highest levels of society and determined to derail the war effort against Nazi Germany. From the staff of the newly founded literary magazine, Duration, hunkered down in their Bloomsbury square, and the country house parties full of renegade Tory MPs, to Tyler Kent, the Embassy cipher clerk with his sheaf of stolen presidential telegrams, the journalist Beverley Nichols deviously at work on an alternative King’s Speech, while a Lancashire lad named Rodney nervously runs errands from his Maida Vale antiques shop to the House of Commons. The Windsor Faction is an ingenious exercise in might-have-been, which assembles a cast of real and imaginary people in a horrifyingly plausible reinvention of history.
As a child, I remember watching our black-and-white television until the station would go off the air and would not broadcast again until the next morning. We had three, maybe four, stations to select from, but today young kids can watch a full-length movie in color on their cellphone. All this advancement took place in a very limited time span. To survive, let alone advance, our children need to be prepared as much as possible to accomplish one very important basic thing—to learn. To learn, they need to not only be able to read and write but also challenge themselves. Not to just do what parents and teachers ask, but to seek out answers to everything they hear about or see. Anyone can witness an action happening in front of them, but those who question why it happened and seek out answers, will be the future. Young minds work like a sponge, and I believe we need to provide them with subjects and items that promote a deeper understanding. Even the construction of a chubby little snow man requires thought and creativity.
