The death penalty is surely one of the most highly contentious points the Supreme Court has had to weigh in on. Whether you believe in the death penalty or not, the Furman v. Georgia case was groundbreaking in its decision to stay Furmans execution because it was arbitrary and, very possibly, racially motivated. Though it did not stop capital punishment, the case changed the way states had to weigh their decisions. Also included are questions to consider, primary source documents, and a chronology of the case.
This book gives details of alkaloid and anti-tumour screening by the CSIRO of nearly 2000 species, the pharmacological testing of the alkaloids of selected species, and the chemical fractionation of those species which had reproducible tumour-inhibiting properties. The book includes 64 colour plates and over 400 line illustrations of chemical structures.
Saint John Henry Newman is widely acknowledged to be an important theologian. Despite this, Newman commentators believe that his work has received little recognition by philosophers. This book explores whether or not Newman’s supposed philosophical isolation constitutes a misconception in Newman historiography. First of all, it does this by examining Newman’s general philosophical reception over the last two centuries; surveying a wide range of philosophical positions and philosophers from the many different branches of this discipline. The book then focuses upon whether or not Newman has made a contribution to one specific philosophical position, seldom given attention within Newman scholarship: the particularist approach to epistemology. In its investigations into this and the other more general dimension of Newman’s philosophical reception, the book offers an historical re-evaluation of Newman’s philosophical legacy.
Basic magmatic rocks make up approximately three-quarters of the crust ofthe present day Earth. Because we can observe and study the volcanic products of present day tectonic regimes comprehensively, we can shed light on ancient tectono-magmatic provinces, and thereby deduce the petrogenesis and evolution of the oldest basic rocks. This is the primary objective of this book. The book was conceived in order to provide a comprehensive review of the basic rocks produced during the first half of the Precambrian, i.e. the Archaean and early Proterozoic, to about 1.8 Ga years ago. Two major questions are addressed. First, what basic magmas were generated during the early Precambrian: were these magmas globally uniform, and to what extent were prevailing tectonic controls and compo sitions analogous to those of the present day? Clearly, this can be answered only by bringing together fundamental information about all relevant basic magmatic events. Second, is there any systematic temporal variation in the nature of basic suites, and what implications might such variations have on our interpretations of early Earth history? Are there important differences between early Archaean, late Archaean, Proterozoic and modern basic magmatic suites? The book uses two approaches to address these questions. Early chapters examine the fundamental characteristics of these basic rocks, whilst later chapters assess regional distribution and development by providing an overview of each major early Precambrian craton.

A Mature Faith is an attempt to develop an anthropology for pastoral care and counseling which deals with both Christian perspective and important data from the human sciences, such as psychology. This book presents an integrative approach which views spirituality and our human quest for meaning as central to a psycho-pastoral approach. A doctrine of persons is designed which deals with both the dimension of creation (image of God) and of salvation (the new being in Christ). This book argues for an understanding of human beings in terms of their human identity before God (Coram Deo) as well as the empowerment of persons by the gift and fruit of the Spirit. Hence the importance of a pneumatological perspective on maturity and adulthood. The interplay between God-images and our human selfunderstanding is discussed. In this regard the question about diagnosis in pastoral counseling and the technique of storytelling receive attention. A pastoral hermeneutics which tries to understand our human predicament in terms of both the social and cultural context as well as our relationship with God is fundamental to the models presented in this book. In spiritual direction, the basic assumption is that God-images and the implication of different perceptions of God on life issues should play a decisive role. In terms of our human quest for meaning within a secularized society, the following metaphor for God is proposed: God as our "Soul Friend". The book is written for priests, ministers and pastoral caregivers involved in counseling and spiritual direction. Its main focus is on professional training within an academic setting. It will also be useful for the training of lay members within a congregational setting.
Should the death penalty be considered cruel and unusual punishment? This was the question brought before the United States Supreme Court in 1972. In FURMAN V. GEORGIA: THE DEATH PENALTY CASE, author D. J. Herda examines the ideas and arguments behind this landmark case. Presented in a lively, thought-provoking overview, Herda brings to life the people and events of this controversial decision and sheds light on the current controversy still raging across the country today.
Peace of the Mind is D.J. Blues follow-up to 2005s The Good Life Chronicles. Once again, he covers a wide array of topics, this time including several chapters on Christian spirituality. Included among them: an in-depth analysis of the Bible, covering questions answered as well as questions raised while reading the Bible; the debate between Catholics and Protestants on different spiritual issues is discussed; and Rick Warrens best-selling spiritual book The Purpose Driven Life is also reviewed, including eerie parallels to topics brought up in The Good Life Chronicles. Readers of that preceding book will recognize other familiar topics: the annual Taconite Trophy Classic continues to be immortalized via the written word, as each years golf tournament has been chronicled herein; the fourth installment chapter on women, always popular yet provocative with the female crowd, is included; and a complete Seinfeld episodic list (partially referenced in the previous book) is now given its just duethe entire classic series is reviewed, episode by episode. This is just a sample of the various topics and experiences covered. Peace of the Mind concludes the Thousand Page Trilogy with an overall introspective and occasionally subtle spiritual theme running through many of the chapters, reflecting the accomplishments, the struggles and the aspirations of life itself.
A new collection from one of the UK's most celebrated biographers, novelists, critics - and, as these stories show, a quite brilliant artist. Wrote For Luck ranges from North Norfolk to Chicago, from sordid old antique dealers to glamorous young writers, from glorious local gossips to frustrated academics. The stories abound with gleeful absurdity, waspish humour, and exquisitely awkward, delightfully English conversations. But they are also rich in melancholy and the heady sadness of people struggling to find a place in the world. Some are fascinatingly strange; others are uncomfortably familiar. Some are simply hilarious - and all are touchingly human
A B.R.A.G. MEDALLION HONOREE Their discovery could change the world forever… In 1947 a spaceship crashed outside Roswell, New Mexico. The government quickly covered it up. And the most famous UFO event in history remained buried. But what if someone smuggled material out from the crash site and decades later it remained hidden in a secret location? And what if a young teenage girl named Melanie Simpson is the only one who can figure out where? READERS' FAVORITE REVIEW: If you're a fan of TV shows like Stranger Things, you're going to love The Roswell Quest. DJ Schneider masterfully incorporates real-life events to craft an engaging narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Frankie is a normal fourteen-year-old boy, enjoying baseball and pulling pranks until Melanie Simpson moves in next door. She wears sleeveless t-shirts, jeans with holes in the knees, Converse sneakers, and can throw a really mean curveball. None of that stops Frankie from falling for her. But Melanie comes with a mystery; one even she doesn’t know exists. Together, with their friend Beanie, they pull a hoax that goes terribly wrong but leads to an amazing discovery. Mel’s father had been at the UFO crash in Roswell and smuggled some of the alien material out. He is dead now, and it is hidden somewhere. Mel, Frankie, and Beanie work to unravel the clues to where. They soon discover others are after it. The Air Force who wants to keep their cover-up secure, and a Russian Agent desperate to get the alien material for the valuable technology he could deliver to his country. It puts them in terrible danger—and only Melanie can find a way out. The Night Owl said: As a kid growing up with Stand By Me, Goonies, Monster Squad, and other films in that genre it was nice to get that feeling from a book. The UFO Detective said: DJ Schneider is doing something important—capturing the REAL truths about Roswell and delivering them in an entertaining novel. ABOUT ROSWELL: The most famous UFO event in history was the discovery of a crashed flying saucer and alien bodies outside Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. The military put out a press release saying they had recovered a flying disk, but recanted the next day, stating it was a big misunderstanding and just a weather balloon. Over the following days the military from Roswell Army Air Field covered it up—they cordoned off the crash sites, recovered the bodies and debris, threatened the local population into silence, and switched out pieces of a weather balloon for the crash debris in a big press event. And the most important UFO incident in history remained buried for years.
This book describes the first Prindles to arrive in Clinton and Franklin Counties, NY and follows their descendants through about five generations. Ephraim Prindle, born circa 1755 arrived in Clinton County, NY by the time the 1800 Federal census was taken; and he with his six sons and one daughter farmed and raised families in that area. As the new West frontier opened up, the families migrated by rail, mostly to Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kansas, Texas and then some on to California, Oregon and Washington. Newspaper accounts of everyday life events and obituaries of their deaths are included. Hundreds of photographs of these Prindle/Prindel descendants, their homes, and headstones, along with some rare historical documents and maps have also been introduced into this book. These Prindles married into many other families during the past 250 years. Two surnames in particular stand out; the Goodwins and the Daddows. These surnames are given extra attention and are followed for a couple of generations. Personal accounts of living experiences and remembrances of some Prindle/Prindel family members are shared. Also mentioned in the book is a brief explanation of the surname Prindle; where it originated, what its meaning is and how it has changed over the years.

The Nixon Administration sought to stop the New York Times and Washington Post from publishing the Pentagon Papers. This book examines the issues leading up to the case, the people involved in the case, and the present-day effects of the Court's decision"--Provided by publisher.
Freedom of speech is one of the cornerstones of American liberty, but it was not always taken for granted as it is now. During the Vietnam War, the government made some choices the American public did not necessarily agree with. When the New York Times published articles detailing a war nobody knew about, it caused some waves in the United States government as it scrambled to cover up what it could and control what it couldnt. This title gives a balanced report of what went on during this time and how the case made it to the Supreme Court. It also gives lots of detail on the differing opinions and what the ultimate decision was. Also included are questions to consider, primary source documents, and a chronology of the case.

In Mystical Discourse D.J. Moores builds on the work of current transatlantic scholarship in a lucid analysis of the connections between William Wordsworth and Walt Whitman. As he demonstrates, the "transatlantic bridge" between both poets lies in their privileging of a type of mystical language he calls "cosmic" rhetoric, which served the function of ideological resistance, as it enabled them to rebel against Enlightenment modes of thinking and being. In a thorough engagement with the work of Wordsworth and Whitman, Moores shows that the cosmic rhetoric of both writers involves a subversive reorientation towards self and society, nature and God, and knowledge and religion, as well as a radical revisioning of language and poetics.

First published in 1994. This book comprises a second edition of Human Geography, behavioural approaches, first published in 1984. The first edition attempted to synthesize the massive volume of geographical literature to have appeared mainly since 1960 concerned with both how people come to know the environment in which they live and with the way in which such knowledge influences subsequent ‘spatial behaviour’. As with the first edition, the rationale for, advantages of, and shortcomings with behavioural approaches are explored at length in both substantive chapters and in a number of detailed examinations of particular aspects of life in advanced Western society.
The excitement of the chemistry of organofluorine compounds stems from the unique reactions that arise and the "special effects" that introduction of fluorine impart on a molecule. Indeed, these effects are now exploited in a remarkable array of applications the whole of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and plant-protection industries. In this two-volume set, we have gathered authors with immense experience in various aspects of their fields and each is a world-authority on the important topics which they have described. The first volume treats the chemistry of fluorinated alkenes, which are important "building-blocks" for the synthesis of a range of fluorinated systems and are used widely in industry. The second volume is directed to techniques and synthons for obtaining fluorinated compounds.
A Lonely Eminence is the second of two volumes tracing the public life and times of Clifford Sifton, one of Canada's most controversial politicians. Volume II of Clifford Sifton, like Volume I, is rich in historical detail and is the result of extensive research into original historical sources. The vitality and significance of Sifton's public and political career emerge from this political biography, which will be of interest to Canadian historians and political scientists, as well as to anyone interested in the growth and development of Canada.

The four Boundary Commissions, one each for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, were established in the mid-1940s and have now been responsible for creating five new maps of Parliamentary constituencies. Despite their importance in British political life, very little has been written about the Commissions and how they work, and much that has been written focuses on the short-term issues of the electoral impact of a new set of constituencies. This volume is a study of the Commissions, involving in-depth interviews with all major interest groups and individuals alongside scrutiny of all relevant documents and statistical analyses of the outcomes.

In Welcome to the club, Manchester legend DJ Paulette shares the highs, lows and lessons of a thirty-year music career, with help from some famous friends. One of the Haçienda’s first female DJs, Paulette has scaled the heights of the music industry, playing to crowds of thousands all around the world, and descended to the lows of being unceremoniously benched by COVID-19, with no chance of furlough and little support from the government. Here she tells her story, offering a remarkable view of the music industry from a Black woman’s perspective. Behind the core values of peace, love, unity and respect, dance music is a world of exclusion, misogyny, racism and classism. But, as Paulette reveals, it is also a space bursting at the seams with powerful women. Part personal account, part call to arms, Welcome to the club exposes the exclusivity of the music industry while seeking to do justice to the often invisible women who keep the beat going.
