West Bengal has often been perceived as somewhat of an aberration in the wider context of a rather chaotic Indian democracy, as the Left Front (spearheaded by the Communist Party of India-Marxist, CPIM) demonstrated a rare instance of political stability, decisively winning seven consecutive democratic elections from 1977 to 2006. Its development record has also been substantial, with a focus on land reforms, the panchayati-raj institution, and an agriculture centric development agenda. This book presents a reappraisal of the political economic history of the CPIM/Left Front regime against the backdrop of the Indian reform experience. It examines two distinct areas: the conditions that necessitated the regime to engineer a transition from an erstwhile agricultural-based growth model to a more pro-market economic agenda post-1991, and the political strategy employed to manage such a transition, attract private capital and at the same time sustain the regime’s traditional rhetoric and partisan character. In order to develop a more textured understanding of the recent political developments in West Bengal, the author applies a historically nuanced and inductive political-economic analysis, which draws on published materials, and primary material such as government documents and interviews (with bureaucrats, political activists, members of the intelligentsia and ministers). A valuable contribution to the ongoing debate in the literature on the drifts underway with the Indian Left and India’s economic transformation post-1990s, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of Political Science, Government, Political Economy and South Asian Studies.

When the first edition of the book was published in 2015, there was no readable and dependable book for the general reader interested to be acquainted with the changing features of the law of copyright immediate after the enactment of the Copyright (Amendment) Act 2012. Since the publication of this book, the Finance Act 2017 has introduced Appellate Board in place of Copyright Board as well as the Supreme Court and High Courts in India have also delivered a large number of judicial decisions on the law of copyright. In this edition the author has surveyed all such Courts decisions and analysed them and inserted them in appropriate places of the book and also examined the impact of the Appellate Board. It presents not only the provisions of the Copyright Act 1957 in the form of a normative, but points out the changes made thereon by formal amendments as well as conflicts of law which have been settled by judicial interpretations. The book is divided into ten chapters. Chapter 1 is introductory, while Chapters 2 and 3 discuss the origin and development of law of copyright at international as well as national level. The most important debatable issue in copyright law is “works in which copyright subsists”, and the Chapter 4 is devoted to this aspect. Chapter 5 explores various issues relating to author of work, owner of copyright and recognised rights of copyright owner. The terms of copyright, licensing of copyright, international copyright and registration of copyright are the subject matter of Chapter 6, while rights of broadcasting organisation and of performers (neighbouring rights) are the subject matter of Chapter 7. Internet is the greatest communication medium of the contemporary era, and there is an inherent link between law of copyright and internet. Therefore, Chapter 8 is devoted to discuss various issues relating to “protection of copyright in internet.” While Chapter 9 demonstrates the law relating to infringement of copyright and defences of copyright liability. Chapter 10, the concluding chapter, discusses the enforcement of copyright in India in detail. This book is one of the few gendered histories of the Partition experience in Bengal. Tracing the afterlife of the Partition in Bengal through the gendered experience of displacement and resettlement, it analyses the spatial reconfigurations that were brought about. Drawing heavily on police records, private papers, newspapers and memoirs, this work enters the realm of personal time in the lives of the migrant and refugee and follows them to see how the spaces that they inhabited, the city of Calcutta and its suburbs, were transformed to accommodate them and imposed with new meanings and one might say, new borders. It highlights how ‘fear’ came to be the dominant emotion associated with the migrants’ flight, how it was subsequently politicized and how it became the cornerstone of the refugees’ bargaining with the state. Furthermore, it focuses on how the state, in its attempt to become a charitable institution, put in place a gendered structure of relief and later, rehabilitation. This work also shows how camps and colonies became the sites of political contestation, how the refugees found a brand of Leftist politics particularly useful for their purpose and how it became the cornerstone of their newfound identity. A major intervention in Partition studies, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian history, migration and diaspora studies, gender studies and politics.

This collection of firsthand anecdotes is probably no different to many others from a war front, World War II and others. There are definitely other published recollections of the same war fronts from different perspectives and nationalities. This work is, however, not just a recollection of military history and facts. These memoirs describe growing up, training to become a doctor, a love of poetry and music, falling in love, unexpectedly being sent to war, and then returning to witness unabated cruelty in his native land. These are recounted from the perspectives of a healer, a surgeon. Such experiences need to be brought to the attention of the reading world to emphasize the futility of war. Many decades later humans continue to develop and build arms to annihilate fellow humans for reasons of ideology, religion, or definition of national boundaries. The pain, suffering, and the ultimate sacrifice made by the souls that perished would be forgotten and would be futile were it not for publications of this genre. We cannot forget. It is estimated that over sixty million men and women, military and civilian, western and eastern fronts, died in the War. Indian military casualties are estimated at eighty-eight thousand. The US and Great Britain each lost around four hundred thousand souls. World War II ended in 1945, but this story continues with his return to the Indian subcontinent, where he experienced the painful and bloody partition of India and Pakistan as the British departed after centuries of colonial rule. He continued to witness atrocities as humanity had seemingly not learnt from the war. He describes seeing more pain and suffering, now a full-fledged surgeon in his homeland. He and his young family escaped at the last minute to the Indian side of the border in 1947 by the skin of their teeth.
