Set primarily in Pass-a-Grille, a small community at the southern-most tip of the barrier islands separating Pinellas County, Florida, from the Gulf of Mexico, 'None So High' follows a group of young men and women who came of age in mid-1960's and early 70's, those heady times when the physical and social environment of the island’s laid-back and free-thinking lifestyle encouraged them to establish careers in what came to be known as ‘The Trade’ – trafficking marijuana. Their lives were an ongoing adventure, risking their liberty - and their lives - taking them to often remote and occasionally exotic places to meet interesting if often dangerous people, and making (or sometimes losing) small fortunes in the process. “None So High” focuses on three of them - brothers - who together with their Father formed a small ‘enterprise' which grew through successes and set-backs, confronting rival traffickers, corrupt cops, treacherous suppliers - and coping with the major changes in their values. The incidents related in the novel actually took place, although I took some liberties with their presentation. The locations are real. The characters portrayed are also real – I grew up with them, worked with them, and knew them well. The names have been altered, for obvious reasons.

What has happened in a setting zoned for Yahweh, God, and Allah featuring a synagogue, church, mosque, and Mormon ward? What can explain an also missing multi-millionaire whose Garden-of-Eden-like estate is right between the Imams mosque and pastors rectory, where the pastors wife and daughter may have died? Rinearson realizes that the animosity exceeds the bitterest emotions in his previous hundred cases. He foresees that it will turn some simulated murders into actual corpses, but his warnings cant avert an ever-deadlier duel between the multi-millionaire, the Imam at the mosque, and the divinity student. By the time the story ends, Rinearson and the divinity student understand that they have grappled not with garden-variety suspects but with lethal kinds of faith involving God and Allah.

This book presents a reconstruction of the trajectories of freedom in Axel Honneth’s recognition theory in the context of the conflict between autonomy and social cohesion. Honneth’s re-appropriation of Hegel’s notion of Sittlichkeit, or “ethical life,” provides a potent descriptive theoretical perspective of social conflicts and an articulated praxis of Hegel’s social theory. Amidst the current critical literature posed against the normative aspect of Honneth’s critical theory, there is an already implicit solution to the problem of normativity and reification. By articulating the conflict between freedom and normativity as both a pathological problem and a progressive movement in critical theory, the theme of solidarity is further reinforced in the development of Honneth’s social philosophy. Through the consolidation of the process of recognition, and the spheres of social interaction where individuals develop, reinforce, and build their identities, it is possible to develop a reverse analysis of a complementary system of social interactions between personal relations, market economy, and democratic spheres to identify deficiencies in societal needs. The book proposes the Reconstructive Normative Simulation (RNS) to consolidate Honneth’s social philosophy. Through RNS, it is possible to examine social pathologies by locating deficiencies in normative resources in the three social spheres. By articulating these deficiencies, the possibility of adjusting societal norms becomes historically bound to existing norms, while at the same time receptive to forthcoming identities.

Following the May 1857 uprising by sepoys in Meerut and Delhi, the whole future of the British Raj was in the balance. Nowhere was this better demonstrated than at Lucknow and Cawnpore. At the latter a garrison of 240 with 375 British women and children battled to survive a siege by 3,000 mutineers led by Nana Sahib. Unimaginable horrors of artillery and sniper fire coupled with the crippling heat of the Indian summer took their toll. An offer of safe passage was treacherously reneged on and the massacres which followed drew a terrible retribution when relief finally arrived, in the shape of Generals Havelock and Neil. At Lucknow, the 1800 British men, women and children supported by more than 1,000 loyal sepoys resisted assaults by 20,000 mutineers, despite heavy casualties and sickness. Sir Colin Campbell's force got through to relieve the garrison and evacuate civilians in November 1857 but the city was not restored to British control until March 1858.These dramatic events are brought to life in this first rate history.

In theory, any human being is potentially capacitated to conceive of—and convey—the chance, view, or fact that matters may be otherwise, or not at all; with respect to other lifeforms, this might be said animal’s distinctive characteristic. This state of play is both an everyday phenomenon, and an indispensable prerequisite for exceptional innovations in culture and science: contingency is the condition of possibility for any of the arts—be they dominantly concerned with thinking, crafting, or enacting. While their scope and method may differ, the (f)act of reckoning with—and taking advantage of—contingency renders rhetoricians and philosophers associates after all. In this regard, Aristotle and Blumenberg will be exemplary, hence provide the framework. Between these diachronic bridgeheads, close readings applying the nexus of rhetoric and contingency to a selection of (Early) Modern texts and authors are intercalated—among them La Celestina, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Wilde, Fontane.

He investigates and explains the historical changes leading to the cross-linguistic diversity of inflectional patterns, and he presents his results within a new typological framework. The book's impressive range includes data on variation within and across languages and language families. In addition to examining languages in Africa, Europe, and Asia the author presents analyses of languages in Australasia and the Pacific and in North, South, and Meso-America. In doing so he reveals much that is new about the language families of the world and makes an important contribution to the understanding of their nature and evolution. His book will interest scholars and researchers in language typology, historical and comparative linguistics, syntax, and morphology.

The many congressional acts and plans for the administration of Indian affairs in the West often resulted in confusion and misapplication. Only rarely were the ideals of those who sincerely wished to help American Indians realized. This book, first printed as a part of the hearings before the House of Representatives Committee on Indian Affairs in 1934, is a detailed and fully documented account of the Dawes Act of 1887 and its consequences up to 1900. D. S. Otis's investigation of the motives of the reformers who supported the Dawes Act indicates that it failed to fulfill many of the hopes of its sponsors. The reasons for the act's failure were complex but predictable. Many Indians were not culturally prepared for severalty. Provisions in the act for leasing or selling their land enabled many to circumvent the responsibilities of private ownership, which reformers and bureaucrats alike had thought would provide a “civilizing” influence. The Dawes Act and the Allotment of Indian Land is the only full-scale study of the Dawes Act and its impact upon American Indian society and culture. With the addition of an introduction, revised footnotes, and an index by Francis Paul Prucha, S. J., it is essential to any understanding of the present circumstances and problems of American Indians today.

Irrespective of the particular tools, however, the ba sic unifying paradigms of feedback, stability, optimal control, and recursive filtering, have remained the bulk of the field and continue to be the basic motivation for the theory, coming from the real world.
