The books are focused upon popular music but cover all musical genres and the authors offer new insights into a variety of issues, including changes in musical fashions and tastes; the impact of developing technologies; the balance of power between live and recorded music businesses; the role of the state as regulator and promoter; the effects of demographic and other social changes on music culture; and the continuing importance of do-it-yourself enthusiasts. Drawing on archival research, a wide range of academic and non-academic secondary sources, participant observation and industry interviews, the books are likely to become landmark works within Popular Music Studies and broader cultural history.

Early modern European society took a serious view of blasphemy, and drew upon a wide range of sanctions - including the death penalty - to punish those who cursed, swore and abused God. Whilst such attitudes may appear draconian today, this study makes clear that in the past, blasphemy was regarded as a very real threat to society. Based on a wealth of primary sources, including court records, theological and ecclesiastical writings and official city statutes, Francisca Loetz explores verbal forms of blasphemy and the variety of contexts within which it could occur. Honour conflicts, theological disputation, social and political provocation, and religious self-questioning all proved fertile ground for accusations of blasphemy, and her contention - that blasphemers often meant more than they said - reveals the underlying complexity of an apparently simple concept. This innovative approach interprets cases of verbal blasphemy as 'speech actions' that reflect broader political, social and religious concerns. Cases in Protestant Zurich are compared with the situation in Catholic Lucerne and related to findings in other parts of Europe (Germany, France, England, Italy) to provide a thorough discussion of different historical approaches to blasphemy - ecclesiastical, legal, intellectual, social, and cultural - in the Early Modern period. In so doing the book offers intriguing suggestions about what a cultural history of religiousness could and should be. By linking a broad overview of the issue of blasphemy, with case studies from Zurich and Lucerne, this book provides a fascinating insight into a crucial, but often misunderstood aspect of early-modern society. The conclusions reached not only offer a much fuller understanding of the situation in Zurich, but also have resonance for all historians of Reformation Europe.

The book opens by describing the disastrous French debacle at Sedan where an army, commanded by the Emperor Napoleon III in person, was trapped and crushed by the artillery of surrounding Prussian forces, despite heroic charges by the French cavalry. Later in the war, Ryan’s unit saw the war at close quarters on both sides of the lines - inside besieged Paris; and at the Prussian HQ at Versailles. I am seventy-six years of age, have had two heart attacks, and am not really very well. My memory, though, is fine, except sometimes for “names,” but I recall the events as vividly as if they are occurring now. My “Far” passed away on June 10, 2013. Today is Valentine’s Day and I visited my Far twice. Our home on 2665 La Veta Avenue is a mere two minutes away. I have just returned from San Bernardino Community Hospital where I visited a patient, in my capacity as a Muslim chaplain. I am not sure who, if anyone, will ever read this book. It is a chronicle of our wonderful life, but there are many “Cinderella” stories. This is not a masterpiece of the English language, nor is it in any way unique. Writing gave me a great deal of pleasure. I knew I had angels beside me, and at all times, one seraph. We have had much joy, pleasure, excitement, much to wonder about, and much to puzzle over. We have laughed and cried, nearly just as much, sometimes out of pleasure and sometimes out of pain and grief; always, we have “walked with God.” We have made many mistakes—we are only human—and have alienated far too many, but never deliberately nor out of meanness. Those who love us will perhaps forgive, and those who do not may hopefully forget our transgressions, real or imagined, always remembering what Jesus said about “casting stones.” We tried to make a difference and, with the help of God, we did. In as much as this humble effort reflects the insuperable challenges of finding peace and harmony in a small family, I believe it resonates with the pain and suffering inflicted by man on his fellow man, in places like Syria, Central Africa, and the Ukraine, and with more natural disasters such as hurricanes, typhoons, and tornadoes, which create no less pain and suffering. As I approach the end of my life, I continue in the Ministry of Healing, in the hope that the solace and comfort I attempt to deliver will not be entirely unselfish. Dr. Frank A. Modern Library Harlem Renaissance In 1923, the Urban League's Opportunity magazine made its first appearance. Spearheaded by the noted sociologist Charles S. Johnson, it became, along with the N.A.A.C.P.'s Crisis magazine, one of the vehicles that drove the art and literature of the Harlem Renaissance. As a way of attracting writers such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, Johnson conducted literary contests that were largely funded by Casper Holstein, the infamous Harlem numbers gangster, who contributed several essays in addition to money. Dorothy West, Nella Larsen, and Arthur Schomburg were among Opportunity's contributors. Many of the pieces included in The Opportunity Reader have not been seen since their publication in the magazine, whose motto was "Not alms, but opportunity." The fertile artistic period now known as the Harlem Renaissance (1920-1930) gave birth to many of the world-renowned masters of black literature and is the model for today's renaissance of black writers.
