Zombies have devoured mankind. And the few survivors would be better off dead because a clan of vampires, bloodthirsty and vicious, have captured the remnants of humanity for livestock. In an apartment building barricaded with wrecked cars, concrete rubble, and snarls of barbwire, the vampires breed lobotomized amputees. Ann, the secret blood slave of the maternity doctor, has evaded this fate, yet her sister Ellie has not. Though she longs to escape, Ann cannot abandon her sibling and unborn niece. But she may have to if she wants to survive. The living dead have found a weak spot in the barricade and are quickly invading the building. Shade, the vampire monarch, defends her kingdom, while Frost, Shade's general, plans to migrate to an island where they can breed and hunt humans. In their path stands a legion of corpses, just now evolving into something far more lethal, something with tentacles--and that's just the beginning.

The skin allograft has been used as the test tool since the beginning of investiga tions of the fate of skin transplanted between two individuals of ordinary genetic diversity. This monograph is designed to furnish the transplantation work er with a review of the significant papers in which skin allografts and xeno grafts, applied to experimental animals and man, have played a role in acquiring a body of knowledge concerning the behavior and fate of these transplants and the reaction of the body to their presence. Skin, an essential organ for survival, a barrier between the "milieu inte rieur" of Claude Bernard and the "milieu exterieur," will remain the most frequently used transplant in transplantation research. Because it is highly antigenic, the final solution of the problem of acceptance of allografts of various tissues and organs will probably depend upon the achievement of a permanent survival of skin allografts. My personal interest in transplantation, which originated during my surgi cal training, was rekindled when I met Peter Medawar (today Sir Peter) in England during World War II. I had joined, in 1940, an American Volunteer Surgical Unit (The American Hospital in Britain), organized and headed by Dr.

One intriguing aspect of physics is its dynamic and rapidly evolving nature; exciting new fields can become moribund within relatively few years, only to revive and grow again in a dramatic and expolisve manner in response to new developments. This has been the case for the fields of optics and atomic physics. In the 1950s, and perhaps into the early 1960s, both fields appeared mature, fully developed, and perhaps even a bit dull as a consequence. The appearance of the laser has tumed both of these fields into dynamic areas of research, within which fundamental and profound questions are being explored. The research of the past two or three decades has led also to very important applications and to new devices. The dye laser, which enables a very narrow line to be tuned over an appreciable spectral range, has led to a virtual revolution in the spec troscopy of atoms, molecules, and the condensed phases of matter. A parallel development, readily detectable in the recent literature of theoretical physics, has been the substantial advance in OUf understand ing of highly nonlinear phenomena. Numerous texts are devoted to exposition of the theoretical methods which may be used to extract useful information from the important equations encountered in the various fields of physics. A survey of the contemporary literature of nonlinear optics shows that in this area one encounters a large fraction of the basic equations and principles of nonlinear physics.
