She later married another doctor and eventually had three children with the man still living with them. Another dire consequence is the effect it had on a Hispanic TV anchor woman, since her fiveaEUR"yearaEUR"old daughter was struck as well as a sixtyaEUR"fouraEUR"yearaEUR"old Negro woman. The fiveaEUR"yearaEUR"old lost consciousness, and the Negro woman wound up with a broken back. The frantic anchorwoman took out her rosary and started praying. The child regained consciousness three days later, and her mother was greatly relieved. Unfortunately, the Negro woman who shared an apartment with her son learned that she would walk again but would be in constant pain the rest of her life. She would have wound up in some nursing home, had it not been for neighbor who lived in the apartment across the hall. Before the accident, they became very close friends, and her son had fallen in love with her, although she was white. One night after work, the neighbor went to the Negro woman's apartment to announce her upcoming wedding. When her son got the news later when he came home from work, he was totally devastated and became extremely intoxicated as a result. The following night, he shot his mother at her behest and then killed himself.

Saint John Henry Newman is widely acknowledged to be an important theologian. Despite this, Newman commentators believe that his work has received little recognition by philosophers. This book explores whether or not Newman’s supposed philosophical isolation constitutes a misconception in Newman historiography. Since the publication of our earlier book on transition metal mediated organic synthesis, * there has been a widespread increase of interest in this topic, and transition metal based methodology has become firmly established in many areas of organic chemistry. The direct, catalytic formation of organic carbonyl compounds using carbon monoxide as the source of the carbonyl group has seen exceptional progress, and this carbonylation chemistry is being used increasingly in research and on a larger scale for fine chemicals production. In view of these developments, there is a need for a modem, practi cally oriented book dealing with transition metal based carbonylation chemistry. The present monograph should help fulfill this need, since it is intended specifically to foster the adoption of catalytic carbonylation as a general tool in synthetic organic chemistry. In comparison with antibacterial chemotherapy the clinical use of specific antiviral drugs is a fairly recent development. By the 1950s a number had been discovered, but their clinical application was delayed until 1962, when methisazone was used for the treatment of infective complications of smallpox vaccination and idoxuridine in the treatment of herpetic keratitis. In retrospect the reasons for this slowness in development is now evident. It was due in large part to the prevailing view held at the time that virus infections could never be treated with specific agents, since the multiplica tion of virus is so closely integrated with the metabolic processes of the host cell that specificity of action seemed impossible of achievement. In contrast, bacteria were independent entities with metabolic systems differing widely from those of the mammalian host, which afforded points of attack by specific agents which had no action upon mammalian systems. Although the mode of action of the sulphonamides and penicillin was not known for some time, they afforded perfect examples of the success of this mode of attack.

Clifford Sifton was at the centre of political controversies throughout his career. A study of his life and times focuses inevitably on major issues in Canadian history. Clifford Sifton: The Young Napoleon - the first of a two-volume biography - examines Sifton's early career including his years in the Manitoba legislature up to the mid-point of his service in the federal cabinet. After Sifton's first election in the 1880's, his political rise was dramatic. As Manitoba's attorney general from 1891 to 1896, he fought to establish Manitoba's national schools system - one of the major issues of his career. Like many westerners, Sifton believed the social structure of central Canada should not be imposed on the West and recommended rejection of the bilingual "cultural compact" of Confederation. Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier made Sifton Minister of the Interior in 1896, and his voice became one of the strongest in the cabinet. In addition to his aggressive efforts to settle the Prairies, he helped to shape tariff policy, administered the Yukon during the problematic gold rush days, and became involved in policies related to the Indians, the International Joint Commission and Imperial connections. In the late 1890's he secretly purchased the influential Manitoba Free Press and used it to circulate politically biased stories to other western Liberal newspapers. This move damaged his reputation with many of his colleagues and with members of the public. Often under attack, Sifton was a born fighter who both generated and revelled in controversy - a proclivity which earned him the nickname of "the Young Napoleon.
