Everyone involved in obstetric practice at the present time will be well aware oft he complexities of drug interactions in the mother and fetus, and newborn infant. Perhaps the most spectacular manifestations of these drug interactions are those that result in teratogenic effects, but the implications of drug therapy generally in pregnancy range far wider than the hazards of inducing fetal malformation. It must also be realised that there are hazards in withholding some therapeutic agents from pregnant women, and these hazards have to be weighed against the dangers of indiscriminate drug therapy. It is often very difficult to obtain relevant information about any given compound in relation to its use in pregnancy, and it is therefore appropriate to provide a handbook which brings together information about a wide variety of drugs in a form which allows ready access for the practising clinician. Rodney Ledward first discussed this project with me some years ago, and it seemed to me at the time that with his background as both a pharmaceutical chemist and an obstetrician that his talents were particularly well suited to this task. In conjunction with Professor Hawkins, he has produced a concise reference book for use in clinical practice, which I feel confident will prove to be invaluable to all those practising obstetrics at all levels of seniority. Solon (c 658-558 BC) is famous as both statesman and poet but also, and above all, as the paramount lawmaker of ancient Athens. Though his works survive only in fragments, we know from the writings of Herodotus and Plutarch that his constitutional reforms against the venality, greed and political power-play of Attica's tyrants and noblemen were hugely influential-and may even be said to have laid the foundations of western democracy. I first became interested in prolactin a little over two years ago. I was then working in Nairobi and I knew nothing about the hormone apart from its role in lactation. Professor Mohammed Hyder of the Department of Zoology in the University of Nairobi was interested in the endocrine mechanisms which enable Tilapia fish to adapt to water with a very high electrolyte content. He invited me to a seminar given by Professor Howard Bern which was largely concerned with the role prolactin plays in fluid and electrolyte balance in sub-mammalian vertebrates. This inspired me to begin a programme of research into the roles prolactin plays in man and other animals. Very few physiologists or clinicians seem aware of the multifarious effects of prolactin in mammals. This book therefore aims to give a comprehensive account of the mammalian physiology of prolactin and to make suggestions about its possible role in diseases ranging from cancer to mental illness. The two subjects which have been previously widely covered, the roles of prolactin in lactation and in rat mammary cancer, are presented relatively briefly though with a full list of references. Other subjects are dealt with more extenSively and I hope that many research workers and clinicians may find the book helpful.

The battery whose story is briefly chronicled in this book, was fortunate in one respect, possibly even unique. From its formation in October 1914 till demobilised in 1919 it had only one commander, the author of this book, Major Grant, who, as a young subaltern, was given command of a hundred Kitchener volunteers and told to make a battery of them. So the 262nd Battery RFA came into being; three months later it became ‘A' Battery of the 84th Brigade, RFA. Another piece of good fortune was the division to which it was allocated – the 18th (Eastern) Division, then being formed as part of Kitchener's Second New Army. Its GOC was Ivor Maxse, a Coldstreamer, an officer well known for his ability in training skills, and under his command the 18th Division was to become one of the best in the BEF. They went to France in July 1915 and moved into the Fricourt-Carnoy sector. During the next nineteen months the battery fought in all the battles of the 18th Division, right through the Somme offensive in which the division was engaged in nine battles and actions. At the beginning of 1917 a new type of artillery unit was created, the Army Brigade R.F.A. Most of these were formed by withdrawing an artillery brigade from each division and the 84th Brigade was selected from the 18th Division, assuming its new role on 22 Feb 1917. These brigades were available for attachment to any division, corps or army needing reinforcement in artillery, and by the end of the war the 84th Army Brigade RFA had served with twenty two different divisions, taking part in the Battles of Vimy Ridge, Messines, Flanders 1917, the March 1918 retreat and the counter-offensive of August. In all no less than 35 officers and 600 other ranks passed through this single battery of six guns during its four and a half years’ existence. At the end of the book is a list of the officers giving the period during which they were with the battery and the reason for leaving. There is also a list of awards but no roll of honour.

I have attempted to prepare this volume in such a way as to provide a source of information on the normal physiology of speech and song as well as on the disorders of those functions. To the extent that I have succeeded it should be of interest to physiologists, physicians, and teachers and students of the VOlce. The book is by no means a text on laryngology, nor is it a treatise on the physiology of breathing mechanics, nor yet is it a manual telling how to teach or learn voice production. If none of these, what is it? It is a discussion of the application of breathing mechanics to phonation of interest to the respir- atory physiologist, of certain aspects of physiology and medicine of interest to the teacher or student of voice, and of the problems of voice production and its maladies of interest to the laryngologist. I have undergone a number of experiences during the past 50 years which I believe have qualified me to undertake this task with some special hope of success. In my youth I studied voice for twelve years with four outstanding teachers and performed publicly as a lieder singer, in oratorio, chorus, and opera. Later I trained for and entered the medical profession in the specialty of otolaryngology. Later still I engaged in research on the physiology of breath ing mechanics and phonation, especially singing.

RichardJ. Winzler died ofa heart attack on September 28, 1972. He was a versatile, internationally renowned biochemist, gifted with bound less energy and a great breadth of view. After early work on respiratory enzymes, he developed a lifelong in te rest in complex carbohydrates and, particularly, glycoproteins. He early recognized the important role of the latter substances in membrane function and developed the now widely accepted model for the structure of major erythrocyte membrane glyco pro teins. He expanded this model to include the possible general roles of membrane glycoproteins in specific membrane functions, particularly cell recognition phenomena. Richard Winzler possessed a broad and critical perception of the ftux of biomedical progress. He thus appreciated very early that general recognition of the complexity of membrane-associated phenomena would foster a new, rapidly expanding, interdisciplinary membrane technology. He also recognized the need for means to bridge the communication barriers inevitably genera ted by such an evolution, and this conviction largely stimulated us to write this book. Membrane technology is a vast field and we cannot treat all its aspects. Instead, we concentrate on those areas that, in our view, have evolved most rapidly. In this, we pay primary but not exclusive attention to the plasma membrane, but where relevant, consider other biomem branes and diverse model systems. Moreover, we focus on animal cells, but include information derived from microbial and artificial membranes where germane.
