Existence as such cannot be controlledit can only be observed. And in a sense, reality is not in fact physical, but figural. Yet despite these truths about the elusive nature of reality, a concrete definition of these concepts may provide a way to grasp a wider understanding of our being. For while intangible realities like our thoughts and our imaginations can be considered by skeptics as merely hallucinations or immaterial, in a real sense it is also true that they are rooted in the brain and are thus intermittently physical as well; therefore, given this possibility, even our dreams may become reality. Surreality explores these questions and more through the autobiographical history of an author confronted at once with the challenges of life and the realities of distant memories. Teetering on the boundaries of language and a play on the sometimes surreal landscape of existence that is nevertheless based sur la ralit, or on reality, it likewise offers a window into a mind where the physical and the figurativethe brain and the imagination, consciousness, and memoryconstantly enmesh and decouple to create a perplexing reality. The mind and brain are complex and intricately related, and together they form a reality whose contours can only be traced by our own perceptions. The metaphor of the monster or predator—usually a sexual predator, drug dealer in areas frequented by children, or psychopathic murderer—is a powerful framing device in public discourse about how the criminal justice system should respond to serious violent crimes. The cultural history of the monster reveals significant features of the metaphor that raise questions about the extent to which justice can be achieved in both the punishment of what are regarded as "monstrous crimes" and the treatment of those who commit such crimes. This book is the first to address the connections between the history of the monster metaphor, the 19th century idea of the criminal as monster, and the 20th century conception of the psychopath: the new monster. The book addresses, in particular, the ways in which the metaphor is used to scapegoat certain categories of crimes and criminals for anxieties about our own potential for deviant, and, indeed, dangerous interests. These interests have long been found to be associated with the fascination people have for monsters in most cultures, including the West. The book outlines an alternative public health approach to sex offending, and crime in general, that can incorporate what we know about illness prevention while protecting the rights, and humanity, of offenders. Broke Brain" is brief travel through a traumatic brain injury by a survivor of one. Personally it’s feels good to finally dig-up a memory’s existence. These memories that relate to each other in time-line or setting gradually open avenues to this injury’s inception. The sensations that most enjoy with its myriad of pleasant feelings wake to roll over but the back of my head’s grabbed and forced down into mushy and bloody gray that forces a scream then coma at the outset. A high note with nervous tones squeals in total servility and rapidly moves with a grinding scream to claw down a blackboard. That signals an injury from the brain where all physical pain can be blocked by the injury itself but mental pain emanates oh so freely. Along with a need-to-know for all, this entire book is a preface of sorts for survivors, care-givers and perhaps professionals as well to show a brain injury and some of its effects. It should be realized that brains are like fingerprints in that they’re different from each other. That fact is shown in that my parents were told that I wouldn’t wake-up and then I wouldn’t wake-up and then I wouldn’t make change for a dollar. Perceptions perceptions. That was about 10 years before a defunct attempt at grad school. Much healthy life underwent prologs my injury. That’s how life consuming and life-altering a traumatic brain injury is.

Perhaps you've heard of Richard Speck. He'd murdered eight nurses, in Chicago, in 1965. He was caught, tried, convicted. Sentenced to death. In 1972, The Supreme Court decided that capital punishment was "cruel and unusual punishment". All death sentences were commuted to Life Imprisonment. In Illinois, Speck became eligible for parole in 1976. In Bad Blood, Wessley H. Burleson kills "only" four stewardesses -- and rapes a fifth. He is caught, tried, convicted. Sentenced to death. His sentence also becomes life. When his case comes up, he is granted parole. He leads the authorities on a merry chase -- leaving a deadly path of human debris in his wake.
In Summa is only an attempt to show what is otherwise normally unresolved. This is also the attempt to show that a brain-injured poet is capable to express with such a disability, which is one of the ultimate problems. As always, it is a good method to express vagaries and morbid facts, especially with speech problems that are present, which make an uninjured listener discount or question validity. In no sense does this poetry include the entire spectrum of this injury. It would take volumes to detail the feelings of my injury alone, if I had the means to attempt such a feat.

Set in the New York City metropolitan area in 1973, the book follows the suddenly changing (dramatically) life and times of forty-something Victor B. Smigelski. Divorced—and the father of two—he’d led a rather uneventful life in the rent-a-car game. When hard times hit, he is forced to go to work as a security guard. The job holds much more adventure than he could’ve imagined. Twice, he winds up in the hospital after three physical confrontations in three different venues. His fiancée, June Bodner, is grossly upset over the perilous direction his life has taken. She urges him to quit! He vows to comply. But, economics being what they were, he remains with the security company. Further, he winds up in a disgusting role: monitoring a TV camera—in the employees’ men’s room! In that capacity, he overhears two members of a radical group planning to bomb the Statue of Liberty and other celebrated sites in the area! It’s all part of an alliance with other like-minded groups. They would stage such terroristic events all across the nation! Smigelski’s problem: no one will believe him! He finally manages to convince Lt. Royce Dane of the police bomb squad! Dane pursues the case and arrests the eleven people involved in the group. Dane’s problem: he has not gotten a warrant! He has heard the group assembling bombs! He has burst into their lair! The arrests, of course, are thrown out! The book, then, depicts the various problems Dane and Smigelski have trying to cope with these subhumans! Dane doesn’t make it! June and her two children are blown up! Smigelski’s wife and children barely escape the same fate! He is confronted by four submachine gun–wielding members of the gang! How he manages to cope with these traumatic situations is of more than passing interest!

The carotid body (CB) is in charge of adjusting ventilatory and cardiovascular function during changes in arterial blood gases. Regardless this essential function, the CB has been implicated in the sensing of other physiological signals such as changes in blood flow and glucose levels. More important, malfunction of the CB chemoreceptors has been associated with the progression and deterioration of several disease states such as hypertension, heart failure, renal failure, insulin resistance, diabetes and sleep apnea. Although the mechanisms involved in the alterations of the CB function in pathophysiology are currently under intense research, the development of therapeutic approaches to restore normal CB chemoreflex function remains unsolved. Recent studies showing the effect of CB denervation in pathophysiology have unveiled a key role of these arterial chemoreceptors in the development of autonomic imbalance and respiratory disturbances, and suggest that targeting the CB could represent a novel strategy to improve disease outcome. Unfortunately, classical pharmacotherapy intended to normalize CB function may be hard to establish since several cellular pathways are involved in the CB dysfunction. Augmented levels of angiotensin II, endothelin-1, cytokines and free radicals along with decreases in nitric oxide had all been related to the CB dysfunction. Moreover, changes in expression of angiotensin receptors, nitric oxide synthases and cytokines that take place within the CB tissue in pathological states also contribute to the enhanced CB chemoreflex drive. It has been shown in heart failure, hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea that the CB becomes tonically hyper-reactive. During the progression of the disease this CB chemosensory facilitation process induces central nervous system plasticity. The altered autonomic-respiratory control leads to increased cardiorespiratory distress and the deterioration of the condition. The focus of this e-book will be to cover the role of the CB in pathophysiology and to provide new evidence of the pathways involved in the maladaptive potentiation of the CB chemoreflex function.
