When seen from an outsider's vantage point, the development of knowledge in the sensory sciences must appear massive and the result of some carefully followed master plan. In reality, it is the result of numerous relatively independent human endeavors shaped by application of the scientific method. The comprehensive construction of quantitative theories of sense organ function has occurred only recently -but at an explosive rate prefaced by centuries of expansion in the physical sciences. Predicated on this growth, the twentieth century may become known as the age of the biological sciences. With the exception of a modest number of intellectual giants, there were few contributors to the foundations of the sensory sciences before the dawn of this century. At least 90% of existing knowledge has been produced by scientists working in laboratories founded since 1920. If any single scientist and his laboratory may be identified with the growth in the sensory sciences, it is EDGAR DOUGLAS ADRIAN, First Baron of Cambridge and leader of the Physiological Laboratory at Cambridge University, England. Lord ADRIAN'S influence upon the sensory sciences was great, not only in terms of his contribution to knowledge itself but also through the influence which he exerted upon numerous young scientists who spent weeks or years at the Cambridge laboratory and who later returned to their homelands and colleagues with the seeds of vigorous research and quantitative inquiry firmly implanted.

The characteristic – Planck – energy scale of quantum gravity makes experimental access to the relevant physics apparently impossible. Nevertheless, low energy experiments linking gravity and the quantum have been undertaken: the Page and Geilker quantum Cavendish experiment, and the Colella-Overhauser-Werner neutron interferometry experiment, for instance. However, neither probes states in which gravity remains in a coherent quantum superposition, unlike – it is claimed – recent proposals. In essence, if two initially unentangled subsystems interacting solely via gravity become entangled, then theorems of quantum mechanics show that gravity cannot be a classical subsystem. There are formidable challenges to such an experiment, but remarkably, tabletop technology into the gravity of very small bodies has advanced to the point that such an experiment might be feasible in the near future. This Element explains the proposal and what it aims to show, highlighting the important ways in which its interpretation is theory-laden.

Wissenschaftliche Studie aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Kultur, Technik, Völker, Note: 1,0, Hochschule Fulda, Veranstaltung: Methoden Wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In unserer Studie befassen wir uns mit verschiedenen Aspekten der Emigration kamerunischer Studierender nach Fulda. Wir konzentrieren uns dabei sowohl auf push-pull-Faktoren, die für die Migrationsentscheidung gesorgt haben, das Phänomen der Bamiléké als auch auf die Integrationsstrategien der Personen aus unserem Forschungsfeld, dem Kurs zur Vorbereitung auf die Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang. Die Ergebnisse unserer Studie basieren auf qualitativen Daten, die wir in drei Interviews, acht Besuchen des DSH-Kurses und zahlreichen spontanen Gesprächen mit KursteilnehmerInnen erhoben haben. Die Interviews führten wir mit zwei Kamerunern und einer Kamerunerin, die seit mehreren Monaten in Fulda und Umgebung wohnhaft sind. Im Folgenden stellen wir zunächst dar, warum wir die Methode der qualitativen Sozialforschung wählten und wie wir im Einzelnen unsere Daten erhoben haben. Dabei werden wir die verwendeten Methoden kurz aufführen und den Verfahren gegenüberstellen, die für die Durchführung unsere Studie nicht in Frage kamen. Anschließend beleuchten wir den Feldzugang und reflektieren den Aufenthalt im Feld. Bei der Darstellung unserer Ergebnisse beleuchten wir zunächst die push-pull-Faktoren, die die Interviewten zur Emigration bewegten, gehen anschließend auf das Phänomen des Volksstammes der Bamiléké ein und stellen dann ihre Integrationsstrategien vor. In Abgleich mit der bereits vorhandenen Literatur werden wir diesbezüglich unsere Theorien bilden. Abschließend gehen wir auf unser Projektmanagement und das Arbeiten in der Gruppe ein und erörtern mögliche weiterführende Forschungen zu diesem Thema.
