Micah Kiel discusses the overly simplistic nomenclature ('Deuteronomistic') given to Tobit's perspective on retribution and attempts to show, by coordinating it with Sirach and parts of 1 Enoch, how the book's view is much more complex than is normally asserted. Kiel argues that the return of Tobit's sight is a catalyst that ushers in new theological insight, specifically, that the world does not run to the tightly mechanized scheme of act and consequence. Kiel's close comparison between Tobit and selected contemporaneous literature provides context and support for such narrative observations. Sirach and parts of 1 Enoch demonstrate how authors at the time of Tobit were expressing their views of retribution in the realm of creation theology. The created order in Tobit is unruly and rises up in opposition to God's righteous characters. By way of this quirky tale, the author of Tobit suggests that God does not function strictly according to old formulae. Instead, a divine incursion into human reality is necessary for the reversal of suffering.

Emigrants from an undetermined county whose last names look Polish.

What if our inherited theologies of salvation are distorted by a sinful history that includes white supremacy, slavery, and colonial conquest? What if we perpetuate this distortion by continuing to imagine salvation as a legal transaction by which we are saved by God from divine punishment? If salvation merely rectifies the individual’s standing before God, justice and human flourishing are viewed as peripheral to “the gospel.” This book begins with a bit of “deconstruction.” But the real need is construction or perhaps the discovery of another “soteriological imagination.” To be saved is to be drawn into union with Jesus Messiah, the bringer of the now and future reign of God where all things are rectified. Jesus is God’s “apocalyptic insurrection” against every power that dehumanizes, harms, and destroys human persons. We are saved by the triune God, by God’s gracious acceptance that cannot be earned. Sextus Iulius Frontinus is best known as author of the military handbook Strategems but, in addition to writing this and other works (now lost), he also had a varied and surprisingly influential career in military and civil posts around the Roman Empire. Frontinus loyally served at least six emperors, often acting as a trusted counselor, and even deputized for Trajan while he was busy in Germany and elsewhere. He was possibly the longest-serving governor of Britain (five years), where he completed the subjugation of Wales and established the frontier in northern England at the Ribble-Tees line. He founded several legionary fortresses, including those that later became the towns of York, Chester and Caerleon. He also served on the Rhine, in Spain and Asia and in the civil sphere reformed the water supply of Rome. John Grainger has written the first full biography of Frontinus. Reconstructing his life to the fullest extent permitted by the sources, he favorably re-evaluates his importance, particularly in Britain (at the expense of the better-known Agricola. Froninus' career, the author concludes, is one of the most varied and significant of any that can be reconsructed for any Roman who did not become Emperor.
