This book is the first systematic study of the urban Papuan and analyses, among other things, the family, household budgets, the proliferation of ceremonial and the re-birth of sorcery. The study can be compared, from the point of view of methods and research problems, with the increasing number of accounts of the urbanization of traditional societies, particularly in Africa. Hanuabada is not, however, 'de-tribalized' and it has maintained its boundaries intact against overwhelming immigration. First published in 1957.

First published in 1945, The Condemned Playground expresses the author’s personal views on art and literature and the social science. Infinitely entertaining and witty, at times devastatingly destructive and never merely kind, Mr. Connelly has, nevertheless, an underlying note of critical integrity and even moral fervour. This book will be of interest to students of history and literature.
A commentary on contemporary culture, focusing on the tension between the viewpoints of G.K. Chesterton and Jean Baudrillard. Walton (retired president, Catholic University of America) builds his arguments in the margins of Harvard Professor Richard Pipes' claim that the US has recently acquired a "vociferous intelligentsia." One of the most versatile artists ever to emerge from South Louisiana, Butch Hornsby was an accomplished singer and songwriter, with a difficult personal life. A talented man, Hornsby defeated his own talent through a series of bad decisions. Dirtdobber Blues, a novelization of Hornsby's life, was written by his close friend Cyril Vetter. Through the music, images, and text, Hornsby moves from the strawberry fields of Amite, Louisiana, to the bars of Baton Rouge and into the unforgiving arena of the recording industry. Along the way, Vetter provides glimpses into the musician's inspiration--a tumultuous young love, a stint in Hollywood, his family's return to Louisiana--and pieces together the arc of Hornsby's life, littered with poor decisions, crowned by artistic success, and concluding with the redemptive power of love.

Presented first is the puzzling death of a wealthy self-help guru at the hands of "The Harlem Kevorkian" and the case's latest legal ramifications. Next is the abduction of a little girl, held captive within shouting distance of her loved ones, and her killer's bizarre trial. The third case is the story of a relative who refused to give up on solving the vicious murder of a popular dentist when law enforcement tried to cover up the crime. Last is an unimaginable tale of two heroic grandparents who worked to save a baby from the depths of evil.
Unity is the categorical imperative of the church. It is not just the church's bene esse, but its esse. In addition to being a theological concept, unity has become a raison d'etre of various structures that the church has established and developed. All of these structures are supposed to serve the end of unity. However, from time to time some of them deviate from their initial purpose and contribute to disunity. This happens because the structures of the church are not a part of its nature and can therefore turn against it. They are like scaffolding, which facilitates the construction and maintenance of a building without actually being part of it. Likewise, ecclesial structures help the church function in accordance with its nature but should not be identified with the church proper. This book considers the evolution of some of these church structures and evaluates their correspondence to their initial rationale. It focuses on particular structures that have developed in the eastern part of the Christian oecumene, such as patriarchates, canonical territory, and autocephaly, all of which are explored in the more general frame of hierarchy and primacy. They were selected because they are most neuralgic in the life of the Orthodox churches today and bear in them the greatest potential to divide.
