In order to grow in faith to a deeper relationship with God, it is important to first have a strong sense of one's own worth as a basis for growth. This involves an accurate self-perception and a loving self-acceptance. Affirmation can help to develop a loving self-acceptance, where one can experience, feel, and see one's worth. Affirmation is a gift of love from one person to another, where one receives oneself as one experiences one's own goodness and dignity from the other and one learns one is lovable. Another key to spiritual growth is self-knowledge. Self-acceptance and self-knowledge are the beginning of the spiritual life. Developing emotional awareness leads to greater self-knowledge. Emotions need to be listened to and interpreted as part of the development of self-knowledge and self-acceptance. This emotional awareness is the beginning of understanding the negative patterns of behavior that comes out of one's woundedness. With the healing presence of Christ through prayer, one can experience God's love for them in one's woundedness and know that God dwells within and desires to transform and heal wounds with his love. This affirms one in one's worthiness, enabling one to be able to open to receive love and then return love. In spiritual direction, one seeks a relationship with God. It is a sacred time of growth, conversion, and transformation. It is a time when one looks at a relationship with self, others, and God. One is empowered by the grace of God to enter this process and continue the development of these relationships. The ministry of spiritual direction is called to be the sacred place where humanity in their fullness meets their God and accepts his mercy. When one surrenders to this grace, one is surrendering to love, mercy, and affirmation. One's self-image and relationship with others and God are touched and experienced in a new light.

The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century English Women explores the vital and unexplored ways in which women's life writings acted to undergird, guide, and indeed shape religious communities. Through an exploration of various significant but understudied personal relationships- including mentorship by older women, spiritual friendship, and care for nonbiological children-the book demonstrates the multiple ways in which women were active in writing religious communities. The women discussed here belonged to communities that habitually communicated through personal writing. At the same time, their acts of writing were creative acts, powerful to build and shape religious communities: these women wrote religious community. The book consists of a series of interweaving case studies and focuses on Catherine Talbot (1721-70), Anne Steele (1717-78), and Ann Bolton (1743-1822), and on their literary interactions with friends and family. Considered together, these subjects and sources allow comparison across denomination, for Talbot was Anglican, Steele a Baptist, and Bolton a Methodist. Further, it considers women's life writings as spiritual legacy, as manuscripts were preserved by female friends and family members and continued to function in religious communities after the death of their authors. Various strands of enquiry weave through the book: questions of gender and religion, themselves inflected by denomination; themes related to life writings and manuscript cultures; and the interplay between the writer as individual and her relationships and communal affiliations. The result is a variegated and highly textured account of eighteenth-century women's spiritual and writing lives.

He would dismiss them as a sick joke, but the obituaries follow the actual deaths of people close to him. Rather than going to the police, he grudgingly rehires Victoria to uncover the identity of the obituary writer. Victoria knows almost everybody on the Island, and she may be the only person who can solve the mystery before the editor needs a genuine obituary of his own. In The Paperwhite Narcissus, as in the four previous books in the series, Cynthia Riggs explores the rich and varied setting of Martha's Vineyard in a way that only a native Islander can. The story glides from Wasque, the desolate southeast corner of Chappaquiddick, to the Coast Guard boat ramp in Menemsha; from the elegantly maintained Captains' houses in Edgartown to the wild Atlantic Ocean beach at Quansoo. Big History, Small World is also the first book about big history specifically designed to be used in high school courses and with the free curriculum available from the Big History Project cofounded by Bill Gates and David Christian. Big History, Small World is organized into twelve chapters. In the first chapter, Brown discusses the scientific method. In the last chapter she discusses the different ways people interpret big history and find meaning in it. The other ten chapters are based on eight major turning points, or thresholds, in the cosmic story. One threshold, the emergence of life, gets two chapters, while a discussion of the future fills chapter eleven. This book is not formatted as a traditional textbook, although it can easily be used as one. Each chapter has questions on the frontier of knowledge, as well as suggestions of how the content applies directly to the reader, to answer the perennial question: “Why do I have to learn this?” There are illustrations, charts, diagrams, a glossary and timeline, and short biographies of scientists and historians who have been influential in developing big history. Cynthia Stokes Brown has taught world history in high-school and trained high-school teachers at Dominican University of California, where she piloted big history courses and helped initiate the big history program now required for all freshmen. She is the author of the general-interest book on big history, Big History: From the Big Bang to the Present (New York: New Press, 2nd ed. 2012) and also wrote a university-level textbook with David Christian and Craig Benjamin, Big History: Between Nothing and Everything (New York: McGraw-Hill, 2014). She is a founding member of the International Big History Association and associate editor of its publication, Origins.
