Bishop Ted Pernell is the main character in the book. Aquila, the bishop’s secretary, had asked him to take on an old friend (Dr. Keith Dobson) of hers to receive biblical counseling. Dr. Dobson, the man requesting advice, is a chief executive officer, the highest-ranking person of the largest healthcare institution in Florida. The doctor and CEO’s son, Jason, was angry at his sister, Nya. Jason had an issue with Greg, the brother of Caleb, the young man Nya is dating. The feel-ings of desperation and unhappiness had made Jason drink more than he normally would. Meanwhile, the bishop had his own share of concerns. He and his lovely wife Karia Anna really wanted to have children. In time, God told Karia Anna she would have a son, and she trusted God. One night, after a movie and dinner, Ted Pernell was helping her load the dishwasher when, suddenly, God reminded him of a note that more than a week ago, an elderly lady, Ms. Taylor slipped into his suit pocket after church. Bishop Pernell quickly finished loading the dishes and immediately went into his bedroom and then into his clothes closet. He retrieved the handwrit-ten letter from Ms. Taylor, and it read: “I had a dream last night. I dreamed I was sitting watching a relay race. The transfer team had three strong long-distance runners, and you were leading this team. This is a spiritual race, not a short race, not for sprinters; it is a test of en-durance . . . The next runner was the young deacon, Caleb, the Lord says he will be a great prophet. Next, he will pass the baton to your biological son. You are to name him Gath . . .” Bishop Pernell reread the letter several times. The extraordinary prophecy took a while to sink in.

Each chapter begins with a scripture, followed by a short story, and concludes with a powerful message. The stories were created to illustrate or teach truth. Although they are fictional, they could have happened. For example, Chapter Five: Abstruse is about three men (a professor, a dentist, and an anesthesiologist). They met while attending a sport training camp. The men just happened to have a common interest in climbing, hiking, and mountaineering. They realized that climbing Mount Everest was on each one of their to-do list. At first when they arrived, the men sat motionless, watching the ground shift. It was like a bunch of ice cubes were continually tumbling down the mountain wall. Yet the beauty of the view at the top of the mountain made the earth’s troubles seem even more horrifying!

The portending process of climate change, induced by the anthropogenic accumulations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, is likely to generate effects that will cascade through the biosphere, impacting all life on earth and bearing upon human endeavors. Of special concern is the potential effect on agriculture and global food security. Anticipating these effects demands that scientists widen their field of vision and cooperate across disciplines to encompass increasingly complex interactions. Trans-disciplinary cooperation should aim to generate effective responses to the portending changes, including actions to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases and to adapt to those climate changes that cannot be avoided. This handbook presents an exposition of current research on the impacts, adaptation, and mitigation of climate change in relation to agroecosystems. It is offered as the first volume in what is intended to be an ongoing series dedicated to elucidating the interactions of climate change with a broad range of sectors and systems, and to developing and spurring effective responses to this global challenge. As the collective scientific and practical knowledge of the processes and responses involved continues to grow, future volumes in the series will address important aspects of the topic periodically over the coming years.
