Life is not defined by the bad things that happen to us. It certainly isn't for me.' Written for her young son so that he would know what had happened to his mother, Cynthia Banham's inspiring family memoir uncovers a true picture of what survival means: 'This book tells a story that I tried to write many times before, but couldn't. For a long time, it was too painful to tell. It is also one I hadn't known how to tell. It had to be more than a story about surviving a plane crash, a random event without intrinsic meaning.' Unable until now to write her own story, Cynthia found that the lives of her Italian grandfather, Alfredo, and his intriguing older sister, Amelia, resonated with her own. Discovering their sacrifice, joy, fear and love, from Trieste to Germany and America, and finally to Australia, their stories mirror and illuminate Cynthia's own determination and courage in the face of overwhelming adversity. From a remarkable writer, and told with unflinching honesty and compassion, A Certain Light speaks to the heart of what really matters in life.
This book analyses and compares how the USA's liberal allies responded to the use of torture against their citizens after 9/11. Did they resist, tolerate or support the Bush Administration's policies concerning the mistreatment of detainees when their own citizens were implicated and what were the reasons for their actions? Australia, the UK and Canada are liberal democracies sharing similar political cultures, values and alliances with America; yet they behaved differently when their citizens, caught up in the War on Terror, were tortured. How states responded to citizens' human rights claims and predicaments was shaped, in part, by demands for accountability placed on the executive government by domestic actors. This book argues that civil society actors, in particular, were influenced by nuanced differences in their national political and legal contexts that enabled or constrained human rights activism. It maps the conditions under which individuals and groups were more or less likely to become engaged when fellow citizens were tortured, focusing on national rights culture, the domestic legal and political human rights framework, and political opportunities.

A Sound Revolution. The true story of Marie Louise Killick's valiant fight against powerful men in the musical world. They had pirated her invention of a stylus that was to revolutionize the quality of sound reproduction of gramophone records. Despite winning her 10 year legal battle in The Royal Courts of Justice in London, England, her opponents, Pye Radio, found other means to ensure she never received her damages - worth millions. Manoeuvred into bankruptcy, she spent three years trying to prevent the Official Receiver from settling her damage claim against Pye Radio for a derisory sum. She died at the age of 49, penniless and homeless. During her fight she was 'kidnapped', her supporters were assaulted and even her solicitor was frightened off the case. During the fight, she was hounded from pillar to post and forced to spend six weeks with her children living in a builder's yard. Truly a story of enormous courage and tenacity on her part to bring the men who had robbed her to justice!

Re-finding the woman warrior underpinned the work of Ashcroft, a unique mental health project founded in 1986.The 1930s country house, already named Ashcroft, became the focus of healing for women who had suffered. It grew from a residential care home to become a bridge to independent life for many women who had previously been patients of psychiatric services.Core work was in listening to each woman and then accompanying them on a journey to greater independence. The Ashcroft Charity expanded to offer not just accommodation and care, but therapy and rehabilitation. Bungalows were built in the grounds, followed by housing and a day service in the nearby town in Norfolk.Although this history concentrates on the first 15 years of the project, the work does go on after 25 years, albeit in ever-changing format since merging with the Break Charity in 2007.
Successful theatre relies on a complex interaction of all theatrical elements: script, direction, acting, and design interact in shifting configurations to offer a new work of art at every performance. Examining these relationships often enriches the theatrical experience. Theatre: Its Art and Craft is an introductory theatre text that focuses on the practitioners and their processes. Using an accessible tone and a focused exploration of how theatre artists work, the book covers every aspect of this art form: from writing, directing, and acting to the designing of sets and costumes, as well as the use of props, lights, sound, and new technology. This book also examines the varying roles of scholars, critics, and dramaturgs. This seventh edition has been thoroughly revised and features new statistics, new photos, and updated references. New sidebars have been added throughout, including one on cultural appropriation, another on lighting technology, and more and better discussions of what carpenters, technical directors, stage managers, and theatre artists do. Accessible to students who have little or no theatrical background, this book helps readers understand how theatre happens by explaining who makes it happen and what they do. Reflecting a commitment to explore how all theatre practitioners work, Theatre: Its Art and Craft is a useful text for beginning theatre majors, minors, and non-majors alike.
Theatre: Its Art and Craft is intended for use in theatre appreciation and introduction to theatre courses. This new edition features updated statistics and references that keep the text current. The first chapter of the text introduces readers to the broad issues of artistic practice, while the second chapter inspects the specific area of live theatre. The remainder of chapters examine in detail the various functionaries of the theatre (audience, critics, playwrights, directors, actors, designers, historians, and dramaturgs). As in previous volumes, readers are encouraged to examine the complex interaction of all theatrical elements. Just as in music some instruments supply the basic structure and some embellish that structure, so in the theatre the elements of script, directing, acting, and design interact in shifting configurations to offer a new work of art at every performance. Examining these relationships will enrich the theatrical experience. A Collegiate Press book
