After working for almost a decade as an award-winning television news reporter, Crystal Bui had become numb to the idea of death—until George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis. Reporters are responsible for documenting history, and in Minneapolis, that also meant dodging tear gas and rubber bullets. It meant fighting systematic sexism and racism while working for a “progressive” newsroom that may have perpetuated the same injustice behind the scenes. In this story within a story, Bui details the intimate moments of her life when the cameras stopped rolling, George Floyd’s murder and the men responsible, and what it’s like being an Asian female news reporter in a heavily white, male-dominated industry. While sharing insight into her personal trauma and the events affecting her life and career, Bui exposes the grave shortcomings of the news industry during what was one of the largest social justice movements of our time.

REESE'S BOOK CLUB MAY 2023 PICK BOOK OF THE MONTH MAY 2023 PICK A multigenerational saga that traverses the glamour of old Hollywood and the seductive draw of modern-day showbiz When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty. The truth behind Kitty's ascent to stardom from her beginnings in the segregated South threatens to expose a web of unexpected family ties, debts owed, and debatable crimes that could, with one pull, unravel the all-American fabric of the St. John sisters and those closest to them. As Elise digs deeper into Kitty's past, she must also turn the lens upon herself, confronting the gifts and burdens of her own choices and the power that the secrets of the dead hold over the living. Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? is a sprawling page-turner set against the backdrop of the Hollywood machine, an insightful and nuanced look at the inheritances of family, race, and gender—and the choices some women make to break free of them.

Wisdom requires clear vision-the ability to see the things that matter, to pass over the things that don't, and the discernment to know the difference. In a fast-paced world, wisdom is also sometimes not equated with optimism. But is this pessimism about the future wise? Not according to the new book, Optimistic Wisdom: Living in Peace without Worry, by Dr. Srisuda Dhamwichukorn. The waves of wisdom that travel from East to West have a peaceful swell; the ocean of Pacific is peaceful. The tradition of wisdom taught from the Far East has much to do with discernment. While Western traditions often examine one's place in the world by looking outside first, the Eastern traditions teach the opposite: look first inside, then prepare for whatever adventures the outside may offer. Dr. Dhamwichukorn hints at this complementary view of the two traditions, along with the places where they peacefully interact. A native of Thailand, she grew up in a land of contrasts: sprawling, urban Bangkok has its islands of peace, the havens of shelter from worry that have traditionally housed the most clear-eyed of monks and buddhas. So how do these teachings find wisdom without worry? A fundamental tenet that often raises questions is the realization that life is suffering. If the future is a path away from worry and towards peace, then many teachers have taught what amounts to a startling starting point. As Dr. Dhamwichukorn writes in easily understandable affirmations, the first shore relieving this ocean of suffering is the knowledge that the path exists in the first place. The path, the discipline, the peaceful mind-these are the refuges of those free from worry. Therein lies the excitement of peace: freedom. Even as adventures present what may appear to be evidence of selfishness, a shortage of love and compassion, and the unforgiving failure to forget those things that don't matter, the freedom of peace persists. That is this book's discerning quality-to balance selfishness with sharing, to meet hate with love, to find peace without worry. Written in a modern, but simple style, the beautiful book Optimistic Wisdom: Living in Peace Without Worry offers rest and reflection in a troubled ocean. This is a guide filled with optimism. The author, having flown across the Pacific from Thailand to America, refreshingly describes why that ocean between East and West is named for peace itself. Everyday, thousands of children move from one place to another because their lives are transient and permanency is non-existent. They move because their parent has been evicted for not paying rent, for using drugs, or for breaking a rule in government housing. They move so often that boxes or garbage bags are their dressers, with clothes spilling out on dirty floors. Many have moved so frequently, that they may have attended three or more schools in one year, and few can remember the names of the schools or the friends they started to make. Sometimes a move is thought necessary if a parent or caregiver feels that Child Protective Services is looking for them and moving in with friends or acquaintances is an option. Sometimes the mother is trying to disappear from a boy-friend or find a place that costs less. Home is a place that you live in for the moment, not the place that you were raised. This book was written so others may begin to know what they go through as children, and the many struggles in being a social worker who tries to keep them safe.
Aldous takes pride in his well-formatted ability to remain in control. To achieve such a goal, he securely locks deep within himself all elements from the seven decades of his past that could shake his precisely placed footing. Then a new family moves across the street, and with it, a five-year-old boy named Dakota with an uncanny ability to gnaw under Aldous's skin. Bit by bit, Aldous's carefully placed façade peels away, allowing God's enduring love to push Aldous to face his past and bring him to his knees, asking God's forgiveness while finding new freedom. To forgive is to give up on the wish for a different past so that we might embrace the present. The Hidden Diamond is a powerful story of forgiveness. As a survivor of many forms of abuse, including molestation, I have made it a lifetime mission to break those chains of abuse so that I would not pass that curse onto my children. The Hidden Diamond developed out of my struggle to heal and find peace. I steadfastly believe God loves us all. God never gives up on anyone, even those whose sins have brought far more harm than good into this world. I formatted Aldous's character from my effort to forgive and understand what demons had tormented those who had violated my childhood. Writing has become one of my most important healing tools. In my journey toward wholeness, I have learned that forgiveness is a crucial ingredient. We each have wounds that beg to be mended. Only God's love provides us the strength so that we may forgive and fully heal.

Originating from graduate topics courses given by the first author, this book functions as a unique text-monograph hybrid that bridges a traditional graduate course to research level representation theory. The exposition includes an introduction to the subject, some highlights of the theory and recent results in the field, and is therefore appropriate for advanced graduate students entering the field as well as research mathematicians wishing to expand their knowledge. The mathematical background required varies from chapter to chapter, but a standard course on Lie algebras and their representations, along with some knowledge of homological algebra, is necessary. Basic algebraic geometry and sheaf cohomology are needed for Chapter 10. Exercises of various levels of difficulty are interlaced throughout the text to add depth to topical comprehension. The unifying theme of this book is the structure and representation theory of infinite-dimensional locally reductive Lie algebras and superalgebras. Chapters 1-6 are foundational; each of the last 4 chapters presents a self-contained study of a specialized topic within the larger field. Lie superalgebras and flag supermanifolds are discussed in Chapters 3, 7, and 10, and may be skipped by the reader.

These dramatically unique characters come together despite their differences for the Greater Good, in the Creation Series.
Overwhelmed by depression and fear, Ruby seems ready for a breakdown. It's that secret, which if it comes to light could destroy her family. But if she doesn't speak out, she may be in danger. What is Ruby to do? Writer Crystal L. Bass keeps the reader guessing as she uses side-splitting humor, ear for dialogue, love for working-class characters and heart felt pathos to deftly move us through the story of the teenager who is caught in a quagmire. Set in late 1980's Baltimore, Maryland, Bass skillfully pulls us into the story of Ruby Bowers, who is one of what her mother, Diane, calls her four precious gems. But Diane has never truly shown how precious they are, so it is no wonder that each is battling their own inner demons. Dark clouds seem to permanently hover over the dysfunctional family, as they crazily yet lovingly struggle through enough family drama to last two lifetimes.

This book is affectionately dedicated first and foremost to the Lord, Jesus Christ, our soon coming King. It is written for His glory, and the furthering of His Kingdom. It is then dedicated to all believers. My hope is that by sharing the story of how I was deeply involved in the metaphysical world while thinking I was getting closer to God, it will shed light on some practices that have seeped into believer's lives under the disguise of "Spiritualism". The enemy is still arraying himself as an angel of light, but my hope is to open the eyes of those who may have been spiritually blinded.
