Being Bad will change the way you think about the social and academic worlds of Black boys. In a poignant and harrowing journey from systems of education to systems of criminal justice, the author follows her brother, Chris, who has been designated a “bad kid” by his school, a “person of interest” by the police, and a “gangster” by society. Readers first meet Chris in a Chicago jail, where he is being held in connection with a string of street robberies. We then learn about Chris through insiders’ accounts that stretch across time to reveal key events preceding this tragic moment. Together, these stories explore such timely issues as the under-education of Black males, the place and importance of scapegoats in our culture, the on-the-ground reality of zero tolerance, the role of mainstream media in constructing Black masculinity, and the critical relationships between schools and prisons. No other book combines rigorous research, personal narrative, and compelling storytelling to examine the educational experiences of young Black males. Book Features: The natural history of an African American teenager navigating a labyrinth of social worlds. A detailed, concrete example of the school-to-prison pipeline phenomenon. Rare insightsof an African American family making sense of, and healing from, school wounds. Suggested resources of reliable places where educators can learn and do more. “Other books have focusedon the school-to-prison pipeline or the educational experiences of young African American males, but I know of none that bring the combination of rigorous research, up-close personal vantage point, and skilled storytelling provided by Laura in Being Bad.” —Gregory Michie, chicago public school teacher, author of Holler If You Hear Me, senior research associate at the Center for Policy Studies and Social Justice, Concordia University Chicago “Refusing to separate the threads that bind the oppressive fabric of contemporary urban life, Laura has crafted a story that is at once astutely critical, funny, engaging, tearful, dialogue-filled, profoundly theoretical, despairing, and filled with hope. Being Bad is a challenge and a gift to students, families, policymakers, soon-to-be teachers, social workers, and ethnographers.” —Michelle Fine, distinguished professor, Graduate Center, CUNY "Perhaps more than any other study on this topic, this book brings to life the complicated, fleshed, lived experience of those most directly and collaterally impacted by the politics of schooling and its relationship to our growing prison nation.” —Garrett Albert Duncan, associate professor of Education and African & African-American Studies, Washington University in St. Louis

Roses are red, violets are blue. Only one woman could make NFL star Gideon Wells walk away from the Super Bowl: His Mama, "Queen" Elizabeth, the beautiful, strong black woman who adopted him and his two white brothers when they were just kids. So when Elizabeth develops a pressing health issue, Gideon doesn’t hesitate to come home and run the flower shop she loves almost as much as her boys. But there’s an unexpected complication in Queen Elizabeth’s shop: and that complication looks really good in a gardener’s apron and pruning gloves. This mama’s boy has a naughty side too. Janelle Gold has always thought of herself as a geek, more into books than sports, preferring brains over brawn. So a gorgeous jock like Gideon Wells is not exactly the type she usually goes for. But there’s something about the hot quarterback that makes Janelle think sometimes opposites do attract, and it’s not just his dedication to his family, or the fact that he can hold his own in the flower shop. There’s just something irresistible about a man who stops to smell the roses.

To support his family, Billy Crystal's father, Jack, worked two jobs, having only one day a week to spend with his family. Steven Pinker meets Bill Bryson in this landmark exploration of language. In the author's own words, "How Language Works is not about music, cookery, or sex. But it is about how we talk about music, cookery, and sex-or, indeed, anything at all." Language is so fundamental to everyday life that we take it for granted. But as David Crystal makes clear in this work of unprecedented scope, language is an extremely powerful tool that defines the human species. Crystal offers general readers a personal tour of the intricate workings of language. He moves effortlessly from big subjects like the origins of languages, how children learn to speak, and how conversation works to subtle but revealing points such as how email differs from both speech and writing in important ways, how language reveals a person's social status, and how we decide whether a word is rude or polite. Broad and deep, but with a light and witty touch, How Language Works is the ultimate layman's guide to how we communicate with one another.

Crystal longed for her father's love, but she felt only rejection. Added to that, she grew up in a home where incest and sexual molestation seemed "natural"-even from a very young age. But when her neighbor raped her and other men abused her she blamed herself. What have I done to make them do this to me? Her low self-esteem and depression led her into alcohol and drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, thoughts of suicide, self-destructive habits and dabbling in the occult. As an adult, she searched for her identity and purpose in life through being a wife, a mother and serving God. But miscarriages, failed adoptions and years of infertility kept her from her dream of being a mother. Crystal turned to adultery to find value in herself. But this only added to her guilt and shame. She believed she didn't deserve to be forgiven. At her lowest point, however, the heavenly Father filled her with His love and revealed her identity to her as Daddy's Little Princess. Crystal Narby served as a youth pastor for ten years and was involved with the Yokefellow Prison Ministry for many years. She was also a volunteer counselor for a domestic violence/rape crisis hotline. Presently she ministers healing and deliverance through Bible studies and speaking engagements. Her mission is to love the Lord and live a fasted life, according to Isaiah 58:6-7, and to go into all the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ, as commissioned in Mark 16:15-18. Crystal resides with her husband, Greg, and their son, Jayden, in Dubois, Pennsylvania.
Hilarious and heartfelt observations on aging from one of America's favorite comedians as he turns 65, and a look back at a remarkable career in this New York Times bestseller. Billy Crystal is turning 65, and he's not happy about it. With his trademark wit and heart, he outlines the absurdities and challenges that come with growing old, from insomnia to memory loss to leaving dinners with half your meal on your shirt. In humorous chapters like "Buying the Plot" and "Nodding Off," Crystal not only catalogues his physical gripes, but offers a road map to his 77 million fellow baby boomers who are arriving at this milestone age with him. He also looks back at the most powerful and memorable moments of his long and storied life, from entertaining his relatives as a kid in Long Beach, Long Island, his years doing stand-up in the Village, up through his legendary stint at Saturday Night Live, When Harry Met Sally, and his long run as host of the Academy Awards. Readers get a front-row seat to his one-day career with the New York Yankees (he was the first player to ever "test positive for Maalox"), his love affair with Sophia Loren, and his enduring friendships with several of his idols, including Mickey Mantle and Muhammad Ali. He lends a light touch to more serious topics like religion ("the aging friends I know have turned to the Holy Trinity: Advil, bourbon, and Prozac"), grandparenting, and, of course, dentistry. As wise and poignant as they are funny, Crystal's reflections are an unforgettable look at an extraordinary life well lived.

This is the second installment of my personal journey, the first being Like Water. Join me as I make my journey on this trip we call life. Some of us “get it” early in life, and some of us have to learn the hard way. I’ve taken the latter. However, in The Magic Hour, I’ve begun to wake up and see that I have been engaging in some magical thinking by assuming that life is going to just drop my dreams into my lap, hoping against hope that my prayers will bring a change to my mother and my life when in reality, the person who needs to change is me. I am to learn this by living through harrowing hidden experiences with my family. Pushed to the limit, what decisions will I make? How will I turn things around? The lessons that I’ve learned as a child, which I thought were a bit archaic and cruel, will serve me well.

The story begins with the daily routine of a woman who is discovering who she really is. During her uncertain state of being, she just goes back in time and shares with the reader about every intimate moment in her life. Even more amazing, she takes you on this journey with her and God while revealing his presence in your life as well. She bluntly asks, "God, what did I do wrong?" She goes on to describe the ways that God speaks to her and the importance of having a relationship with God. Each chapter and each section within chapters offer a new experience, which might feel a bit like a reality show, yet this book is clearly about the presence of God. You will never read another Christian-based book such as this. The author demonstrates a very humanlike experience as a Christian. This book offers a realistic view of being a follower of Christ. The author's story is welcoming and thought-provoking. This book and the following six connectors to "The Relationship" was written with the hope that others become open and willing to be honest about their life journey and, ultimately, develop a relationship with God.
What do the following have in common? Let there be light -- A fly in the ointment -- A rod of iron -- New wine in old bottles -- Lick the dust -- How are the mighty fallen -- Kick against the pricks -- Wheels within wheels. They're all in the King James Bible. This astonishing book "has contributed far more to English in the way of idiomatic or quasi-proverbial expressions than any other literary source." So wrote David Crystal in 2004. In Begat he returns to the subject: he asks how a work published in 1611 could have had such an influence on the language and looks closely at what the influence has been. He comes to some surprising conclusions. No other version of the Bible however popular (such as the Good News Bible) or put upon the church (like the New English Bible) has had anything like the same impact. David Crystal shows how its words and phrases found independent life in the work of poets, playwrights, novelists, and politicians, and how more recently they have been taken up by journalists, advertisers, Hollywood, and hip-hop. He reveals the great debt the King James Bible owes to its English forbears, especially John Wycliffe's in the fourteenth century and William Tyndale's in the sixteenth. He also shows that the revisions and changes made by King James's translators were crucial to its universal success. "A person who professes to be a critic in the delicacies of the English language ought to have the Bible at his finger's ends," Lord Macaulay advised Lady Holland in 1831. David Crystal shows how true this is. His book is a revelation.
