This book investigates the working mechanisms of public opinion in Late Republican Rome as a part of informal politics. It explores the political interaction (and sometimes opposition) between the elite and the people through various means, such as rumours, gossip, political literature, popular verses and graffiti. It also proposes the existence of a public sphere in Late Republican Rome and analyses public opinion in that time as a system of control. By applying the spatial turn to politics, it becomes possible to study sociability and informal meetings where public opinion circulated. What emerges is a wider concept of the political participation of the people, not just restricted to voting or participating in the assemblies.

The theory developed for Z2Z4-additive codes is the starting point for much generalization about codes over mixed alphabets. They have opened a new, emergent area of research. The techniques used for Z2Z4-linear codes are being generalized and applied to more general codes. By example, these codes have contributed to the classification of many nonlinear codes. Moreover, they can be considered as the starting point of many different generalizations given over mixed alphabets, thereby representing a useful area of research. Since 2010, more than 30 papers have been published about the codes considered in the book, which includes important classes of binary codes (1-perfect, Hadamard, etc.) that are not linear in general. For example, much recent research has shown the application of the techniques described for the family of cyclic Z2Z4-linear codes. Topics and Features: Examines everything from the basic definitions to very advanced results Provides numerous examples, succinctly and comprehensively gathering and using the relevant information Includes examples using commands from a new Magma package, developed mostly by the same authors Proposes algorithms, for instance to describe coding and decoding strategies This unique volume will be eminently suitable for researchers working on coding theory over rings, especially over mixed alphabets. In this new study, Cristina Chimisso explores the work of the French Philosopher of Science, Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) by situating it within French cultural life of the first half of the century. The book is introduced by a study - based on an analysis of portraits and literary representations - of how Bachelard's admirers transformed him into the mythical image of the Philosopher, the Patriarch and the 'Teacher of Happiness'. Such a projected image is contrasted with Bachelard's own conception of philosophy and his personal pedagogical and moral ideas. This pedagogical orientation is a major feature of Bachelard's texts, and one which deepens our understanding of the main philosophical arguments. The primary thesis of the book is based on the examination of the French educational system of the time and of French philosophy taught in schools and conceived by contemporary philosophers. This approach also helps to explain Bachelard's reception of psychoanalysis and his mastery of modern literature. Gaston Bachelard: Critic of Science and the Imagination thus allows for a new reading of Bachelard's body of work, whilst at the same time providing an insight into twentieth century French culture.

Moreover, for accurate soft error estimation, the authors adopt a radiation event generator tool (MUSCA SEP3), which deals both with layout features and electrical properties of devices. The authors also explore four circuit-level techniques (e.g. transistor reordering, decoupling cells, Schmitt Trigger, and sleep transistor) as alternatives to attenuate the unwanted effects on FinFET logic cells. This book also evaluates the mitigation tendency when different levels of process variation, transistor sizing, and radiation particle characteristics are applied in the design. An overall comparison of all methods addressed by this work is provided allowing to trace a trade-off between the reliability gains and the design penalties of each approach regarding the area, performance, power consumption, single event transient (SET) pulse width, and SET cross-section.

Firs and pines dominated the global picture of the raw materials for paper industry until the 1950s. At that time, the interest in introducing new species, mostly hardwoods, led the researchers intensify efforts to look for the fibrous characteristics and their combinations that could represent the relationship between fibres, pulp and paper.The pulp and paper industry has shown, mainly in the last two decades, a strong North-South displacement. This is to a large extent due to the favourable climate, which promote the development of the trees. Similarly, the paper fibres have gone from being almost exclusively softwoods from natural forests of the Northern-Hemisphere cold regions, such as spruce and fir, to fast growing species of short fibres, such as eucalyptus, and willow and poplar hybrids from plantations.These new species, that begin to dominate the paper panorama, not only differ from classic ones in fibre length, but they present particular characteristics, like large amounts of juvenile wood, different fibrillar angle and so on, because trees are used increasingly at younger age.This leads us to question whether the old paradigms concerning the relationships between fibres characteristics and pulp properties are still valid or should be reviewed and updated, in which case, the basic fibre parameters, their influence in pulping and refining, and their impact on paper quality should be redefined.To establish the state-of-the-art on the topic, this book analyses the publications of the last decade to verify the morphological characteristics of the fibres which are nowadays considered relevant. Relatively recent data were surveyed because of the continuous changes that occur in the species by genetic improvement.

This book is a compilation of research works on electrochemistry in the broadest of its meanings, carried out by Spanish and Portuguese researchers around 2019. It aims to collect the most significant of our research and to show the excellent level that these works have in comparison with the international state of the art. The selection of works, in an extended abstract format, is based on the papers presented as invited plenary conferences and keynote oral communications at the XL Meeting of the Specialized Electrochemistry Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and the XX Iberian Electrochemistry Meeting, which took place in the city of Huelva (Spain) between 9th and 12th July 2019. In an attempt to cover the work of Iberian electrochemists in the most complete and representative way possible, several invited chapters have been added to this set of works. On some occasions, the authors have reported on potential legal problems regarding the publication rights of their work, mainly due to the high interest in their results and the fact that they had already been submitted to very high impact journals for publication. In this case, they have been allowed to replace their original work by a mini review of their laboratory's line of research, keeping as much as possible the same research topic.

Here Gamow offers a complete survey of his scientific achievements. Tapping onto their dialogue, we have enriched the picture of Gamow's figure with materials gathered also from other sources. First of all, we discuss his autobiography, in which Gamow mainly focuses on the education he received in Russia and on his experience as a young scientist in Europe. We contrast this with relevant writings about his, at times, controversial role in the scientific environment of his epoch. In nowadays aging society, many people require mobility assistance. Sometimes, assistive devices need a certain degree of autonomy when users' disabilities difficult manual control. However, clinicians report that excessive assistance may lead to loss of residual skills and frustration. Shared control focuses on deciding when users need help and providing it. Collaborative control aims at giving just the right amount of help in a transparent, seamless way. This book presents the collaborative control paradigm. User performance may be indicative of physical/cognitive condition, so it is used to decide how much help is needed. Besides, collaborative control integrates machine and user commands so that people contribute to self-motion at all times. Collaborative control was extensively tested for 3 years using a robotized wheelchair at a rehabilitation hospital in Rome with volunteer inpatients presenting different disabilities, ranging from mild to severe. We also present a taxonomy of common metrics for wheelchair navigation and tests are evaluated accordingly. Obtained results are coherent both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view.
