Aaron Ginsberg, a survivor of Auschwitz spots one of his Nazi captors, SS Doctor Klaus Reiner at a Seattle Airport some forty years after World War Two ended. A week later after flying back to Milwaukee, Ginsberg disappears. A worried wife and son contact Paul Rice and ask for his help in finding Ginsberg. Paul takes the case and has to fly out to Seattle to talk to another Auschwitz survivor and friend of Ginsberg’s. During Rice’s investigation he encounters an ex-Nazi who would like to get even with the United States for Germany losing another war, and a couple of enemies who would like nothing better than to one-up Rice, including the Gleaners, the Wolf-Bipeds, the newer version of the Nazis, and Kimberly Hayes, the new possessor of the Durie Grimoire, who would like to turn Rice into stone, like she did her husband.

The purpose of this book is to stimulate thinking among corrosion scientists and engineers to examine corrosion mechanisms and corro sion control from another perspective. While the presence of corro sion films in electrochemical corrosion has been recognized for over a century, the contribution of these films to all facets of corrosion has not been explored to a significant degree. Rather the role of films in certain mechanisms (i.e., stress corrosion cracking) has been empha sized, yet almost ignored for other corrosion mechanisms. This is viewed by the author as solely attributable to the lack of investigation into, and an understanding of, the contribution of films to these mech anisms or forms of attack. The lack of emphasis and study of corrosion films and their contribution to all forms of corrosion attack are probably the result of current university instruction that utilizes two popular corrosion texts (Uhlig and Fontana and Greene) for teaching. These texts provide an excellent understanding at the undergraduate level of corrosion funda mentals; however, the major implicit premise in these texts is that bulk properties of an alloy or metal control the corrosion resistance in a particular environment. For many applications and for a simple under standing of corrosion mechanics, this approach is sufficient. Yet, research on corrosion films indicate these films often have an entirely different composition than the bulk metal (ratio of alloying elements).

The roots of this work lie in my earlier book, Scientific Progress, which first appeared in 1981. One of its topics, the distinction between scientific laws and theories, is there treated with reference to the same distinction as drawn by N. R. Campbell in his Physics: The Elements. Shortly after completing Scientific Progress, I read Rom Harre's The Principles of Scientific Thinking, in which the concept of theory is even more clearly delineated than in Campbell, being directly con nected to the notion of a model - as it was in my book. In subsequent considerations regarding science, Harre's work thus became my main source of inspiration with regard to theories, while Campbell's re mained my main source with respect to empiricallaws. Around the same time I also read William Whewell's Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences. In this work, Whewell depicts principles as playing a central role in the formation of science, and conceives of them in much the same way as Kant conceives of fundamental syn thetic a priori judgements. The idea that science should have principles as a basic element immediately made sense to me, and from that time I have thought of science in terms of laws, theories and principles.

Psychotic disorders are a major public health challenge. Psychoses are associated with significant individual, familial, and societal costs. Yet, our understanding of these conditions is limited because the overwhelming majority of research is conducted in a small number of countries in North America, Europe, and Australasia, which together comprise only around 16% of the world's population. There are consequently substantial gaps in our knowledge of psychoses, and the need for a global perspective is obvious. Psychosis: Global Perspectives comprises two parts: In the first half of the book, the authors review the current evidence base on psychoses around the world by theme, from epidemiology to human rights, highlighting commonalities and differences between settings and illustrating the gaps in our knowledge. The second half of the book synthesises existing research from nine countries in the Global South, providing detailed accounts of ongoing research programmes, local treatment systems, and cultural contexts, and contrasting these with theory and data generated from the Global North. Clearly Rice and Rawls still have feelings for each other and have loved each other since high school, which is a bone of contention between them as to who was to blame for the breakup. They deal with their feelings as they try to find her ex, an investigative reporter who has stumbled on a big story about a navy experiment that the navy did in 1943 and hushed up, and which someone in the government still wants to keep buried, even killing to do it.
