Craig DeLancey shows that our best philosophical and scientific understanding of the emotions provides essential insights on key issues in the philosophy of mind and artificial intelligence : intentionality, aesthetics, rationality, action theory, moral psychology, consciousness, ontology, and autonomy. The book also offers new ways to understand the mind, suggesting that it is autonomy--and not cognition--that should be the core problem of the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. He argues that the philosophy of mind has been held back by an impoverished view of naturalism, and that a proper appreciation of the complexity of the sciences of mind, readily demonstrated by the science of emotion, will overcome this. -- Provided by publisher.

Tamoxifen is a pioneering medicine for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. It is the first drug targeted therapy in cancer to be successful. Tamoxifen targets the tumor estrogen receptor. The therapy is known to have saved the lives of millions of women over the past 40 years. This monograph, written by V. Craig Jordan - known as the “father of tamoxifen” - and his Tamoxifen Team at the Georgetown University Washington DC, illustrates the journey of this milestone in medicine. It includes a personal interview with V. Craig Jordan about his four decades of discovery in breast cancer research and treatment. V. Craig Jordan was there for the birth of tamoxifen as he is credited for reinventing a “failed morning after contraceptive” to become the “gold standard” for the treatment of breast cancer. He contributed to every aspect of tamoxifen application in therapeutics and all aspects of tamoxifen’s pharmacology. He discovered the selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and explored the new biology of estrogen-induced apoptosis.
In this timely book Lyn Craig provides the first comprehensive account of how parents divide their time between caring for children, housework, paid work and leisure. Using large-scale quantitative time-use data , the book provides a detailed analysis of the impact of children upon adult time. This research reveals a unique picture of how parenthood affects daily life within households, and how people’s (paid and unpaid) workload is affected by parenthood. By looking at how the costs and benefits of children are currently conceptualized and apportioned, Contemporary Motherhood shows what becoming a mother entails and why it is so challenging to raise children. Suggesting an explanation for why fertility rates are dramatically dropping, the book makes a significant contribution to the debate on contemporary motherhood and will interest scholars and students in sociology and social policy with an interest in the sociology of the family, gender and sexuality, and the sociology of youth.
Moving away from territorially-bound narratives toward a more kinetic conceptualization of identity, this book represents the first analysis of the politics of American identity within the fiction and memoirs of Isabel Allende. Craig offers a radical transformation of societal frameworks through revised notions of place, temporality, and space.

In the UK and elsewhere, restorative justice and policing are core components of a range of university programmes; however, currently no such text exists on the intersection of these two areas of study. This book draws together these diverse theoretical perspectives to provide an innovative, knowledge-rich text that is essential reading for all those engaged with the evolution and practice of restorative policing. Restorative Policing surveys the twenty-five year history of restorative policing practice, during which its use and influence over criminal justice has slowly grown. It then situates this experience within a criminological discussion about neo-liberal responses to crime control. There has been insufficient debate about how the concepts of ‘restorative justice’ and ‘policing’ sit alongside each other and how they may be connected or disconnected in theoretical and conceptual terms. The book seeks to fill this gap through an exploration of concepts, theory, policy and practice. In doing so, the authors make a case for a more transformative vision of restorative policing that can impact positively upon the shape and practice of policing and outline a framework for the implementation of such a strategy. This pathbreaking book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses on restorative justice, policing and crime control, as well as professionals interested in the implementation of restorative practices in the police force.
VisualDx: Essential Pediatric Dermatology is the first of a series of printed companions to the VisualDx online decision support system. The book enables the clinician to read the fundamentals of common and serious pediatric skin diseases on the printed page, then search the online system to answer a clinical question at the point of care. Like the VisualDx online system, the book is organized by symptoms and other visual clues. Searching in this fashion will lead to precise, targeted, and patient-specific differential diagnoses. More than 500 full-color illustrations show variations of pediatric skin disorders in children of all skin colors.

Training has many different connotations depending on one's perspective. Traditionally, for healthy individuals or athletes it focused on strength, flexibility, or cardiovascular training. Such training would normally be supervised by a personal fitness trainer or strength and conditioning (S&C) coach . This book promotes a different approach in that the aim of training is to promote athletic development (1,2). From the perspective of sustainable athletic development, training is not limited to strength, flexibility or cardiovascular domains, but also focuses on the fundamental A,B,Cs of agility, balance, and coordination as a foundation for enhanced movement literacy (3)"--Provided by publisher.
Violent video games are successfully marketed to and easily obtained by children and adolescents. Even the U.S. government distributes one such game, America's Army, through both the internet and its recruiting offices. Is there any scientific evidence to support the claims that violent games contribute to aggressive and violent behavior? As the first book to unite empirical research on and public policy options for violent video games, Violent Video Game Effects on Children and Adolescents will be an invaluable resource for student and professional researchers in social and developmental psychology and media studies.
This book is primarily about securing your home against potential unwanted intruders and keeping your family safe. The rise in violent crime affecting my country stems directly from an increase in criminal behavior and farm attacks, resulting in loss of innocent lives in my country. The message in this book goes out to all innocent, law-abiding citizens of South Africa. It is time to take a stand and prepare yourselves against becoming victims of the lawlessness plaguing our country. The authorities themselves face great challenges, numerous obstacles, and insufficient support. As a result, we are losing the battle against all crime and, particularly, violent crime. It is now up to individual citizens to change their mind-set and become unbeatable adversaries of the criminal element. I dont advocate vigilantism or breaking the law in order to achieve this. What I suggest instead is that people need to develop the mental and physical skills to avoid violence in the first place and then, if necessary, use a level of violence higher than that which would be imposed on them in a conflict situation.
Why doesn't God answer my prayers? If God is so powerful, why does evil exist? And if He is so good, why do we suffer? Nonbelievers, and even Christians, are often troubled by questions about suffering, doubt, failure, and unanswered prayer. Yet careful, compassionate answers are hard to find, in part because evangelicals have not taken the life of the mind seriously enough. The intellectual currents of our day are just too strong for simplistic responses. In Hard Questions, Real Answers, William Lane Craig doesn't offer trite phrases or pat answers-he offers honest insights gained from a life of study and ministry. Readers in the midst of doubt and confusion will find real answers to these perplexing questions and learn to stand on the only sure foundation for hope-God Himself. This expanded new edition includes chapters on abortion and homosexuality to help readers know how to think about these volatile social issues.
Booze runs through Canadian social history like rivers through the land. And like rivers with their currents and rapids. backwaters and shoals. booze mixes elements of danger and pleasure. Craig Heron explores Canadians' varied experiences with and shifting attitudes towards alcohol in this revealing. richly illustrated book. Book jacket.

Also presented are an account of the terrible first execution and a number of the subsequent gruesome employments of the chair. The text explores the changing attitudes toward the chair as state after state replaced it with lethal injection.
In any episode of the popular television show Law and Order, questions of police procedure in collecting evidence often arise. Was a search legal? Was the evidence obtained lawfully? Did the police follow the rules in pursuing their case? While the show depicts fictional cases and scenarios, police procedure with regard to search and seizure is a real and significant issue in the criminal justice system today. The subject of many Supreme Court decisions, they seriously impact the way police pursue their investigations, the way prosecutors proceed with their cases, and the way defense attorneys defend their clients. This book answers these questions and explains these decisions in accessible and easy to follow language. Each chapter explores a separate case or series of cases involving the application of the Fourth Amendment to current police investigatory practices or prosecutorial conduct of the criminal trial. The police-related cases involve topics such as searches of suspects (both prior and incident to arrest), pretext stops, the knock-and-announce rule, interrogation procedures, and the parameters of an individual's reasonable expectation of privacy. The prosecutor-related cases involve topics such as jury selection, the right to counsel, and sentencing. This important overview serves as an introduction to the realities and practicalities of police investigation and the functioning of the criminal justice system when search and seizure becomes an issue.
When my experiences began...* I started writing when I first learned how and when my experiences began, where I am from, and where I am presently. I am excited about an obscurity of suggestion and willing to venture into the unknown to obtain a classification of words and advice for metaphorical composition and creation. Resisting spoiled, misused, commercialized, deformed, mispronounced, and in general, degraded words. Sensitivity to colloquial speech, intrigue with definition and synonyms. When there seems like there is no such thing as free verse but only different kinds of rhythm. Choice and will are always involved for the use of words can be argued in an illuminating way or a misleading way. Direct, elegant and vivid, sudden transitions, connections in logical order, conception, concise word choice, the unrewarding exercise of discovering observation and justification. The poetic idiom given to generalization. Where discouragement and difficulties follow. When words fall densely onto the page, imposing upon comprehension of sensibility. I have written or have started writing many topical stories, including some with difficult vocabulary. I have studied poets, authors, and novelists and have researched their reputable writing concepts. I have currently completed working on condensing (through editing) a book that I have written, which is a series of short topical stories, if that. This is that book. When I write, I have little problem with punctuation and spelling, although I will find some errors in editing. My grammar skills are good, but I could always use more vocabulary skills. Subjective, spontaneous words that fall onto the paper and using as few words as possible to express an idea. I often find myself reading the dictionary to abstract new words, ideas, and topics. Writing, I believe, has at least one distinction, which entitles me to something. A communicational tool used as an explanation for what is to be held true and valued. Inventing accomplished expression sets me to musing, thinking, and searching. Amusing, melancholy expression that seem to fit justly and harmoniously. That which seems to fortify an idea, prompt and unfailing. Accuracy makes it deliver an explosion. Well-used words converge to form an especially planned distinction, in part, losing a special distinction. This is what is difficult. Arranging words justly and harmoniously, which seem to fit into a theme justly and harmoniously. "Honest criticism and sensitive appreciation are directed not upon the poet but upon the poetry."* Starvation for words is always regrettable because I believe writing is the most sophisticated form of communication. A writer may have the prolific arrangements of being confined to the surface, but by a form and method in which the past and present are constantly faced with each other and resulting in a contrast, which fires new interest which is wise and interesting. Perfecting truth and sincerity with an endless imagination...A strange combination of words to represent the brighter side of things. Having judgement with precision and accuracy and written by the testimony of instinct. The problem is that so much has been written with strong and persistent vacancies. It leaves little room for decision. ________________________________________________________________________________________ *The above is taken from the words of Mark Twain, Delmore Schwartz, T. S. Eliot, and William S. Burroughs. *T. S. Eliot, from "Selected Essays of T. S. Eliot." Originally published by Faber and Faber, 1932. (*) Denotes the original source of information.
Developmental Juvenile Osteology was created as a core reference text to document the development of the entire human skeleton from early embryonic life to adulthood. In the period since its first publication there has been a resurgence of interest in the developing skeleton, and the second edition of Developmental Juvenile Osteology incorporates much of the key literature that has been published in the intervening time. The main core of the text persists by describing each individual component of the human skeleton from its embryological origin through to its final adult form. This systematic approach has been shown to assist the processes of both identification and age estimation and acts as a core source for the basic understanding of normal human skeletal development. In addition to this core, new sections have been added where there have been significant advances in the field. - Identifies every component of the juvenile skeleton, by providing a detailed analysis of development and ageing and a detailed description of each bone in four ways: adult bone, early development, ossification and practical notes - New chapters and updated sections covering the dentition, age estimation in the living and bone histology - An updated bibliography documenting the research literature that has contributed to the field over the past15 years since the publication of the first edition - Heavily illustrated, including new additions

Managing Breast Cancer Risk is a single source for information needed by primary care physicians, nurses, gynecologists, as well as oncologic specialists who deal with women who are concerned about breast cancer. Its purpose is to bring together a multidisciplinary group of experts to address breast cancer risk in a clinically meaningful way. Chapters providing detailed information on individual risk factors are accompanied by a discussion of models, which integrate multiple factors for a more complete assessment of risk. Traditional strategies for risk management, including surveillance and prophylactic surgery, are reviewed, and the data on newer techniques such as ductal lavage and screening with magnetic resonance is presented. The rational for chemoprevention with selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) is discussed, and the evidence for tamoxifen as a chemopreventative is updated. The potential for chemoprevention with newer SERMS and the aromatase inhibitors is reviewed. Finally, the critical (and often ignored) areas of quality of life and symptom management are addressed.
An in-depth look at the life and career of retired judge and conflict-of-interest commissioner Ted Hughes, whose unflinching integrity earned him the reputation as Canada’s moral compass. Throughout his sixty-year career, Ted Hughes has been a model of ethical conduct in the Canadian judicial system. The son of immigrant homesteaders who grew up in Saskatoon during the Depression, he might have retired as a respected senior judge in the town where he was born had his career not been sideswiped by the intense party politics underpinning Canadian judicial appointments in the 1970s. The injustice he felt led him to BC, where he reinvented himself as a civil servant in a province that was earning a reputation for wacky, unprincipled politics. There, he became Canada’s moral compass, a man of such integrity that his condemnation alone persuaded one premier to resign and another to bring in a watchdog to look after vulnerable children. Hughes has ferociously defended the principles that underpin the best of our society. He has an unfashionable belief in the virtue of the law, the nobility and responsibility of public service, and the honour of politicians and politics. He was an early defender of equal rights for women in the legal system, the protection of children in care, and in recognizing the disastrous effect of colonization on First Nations. This is the story of his remarkable life and how he became the lion Canadians needed him to be in when the credibility of our political system was on the line.

Effective financial planning for executives and entrepreneurs is complex, dense, and impossible to reduce to a single, easy-to-understand formula. Designed to emphasize the importance of effective, targeted financial planning, this book begins by telling a story about a fictional, but plausible, power couple and their family who (spoiler alert!) do pretty much everything wrong in securing their financial future. In most cases, they don’t do the things needed because they don’t know what they are. Using this story as a case study of executives and entrepreneurs, the book breaks down the case into chapters and offers practical discussions of all the key financial planning pillars—investment planning, tax planning, estate planning, philanthropic planning, risk management, and equity-based compensation to name a few—with the tools needed to tailor a plan for virtually every circumstance and need. While there is no single plan that works for everybody, this book will provide a guide with complicated, technical information alongside specific guidance on how to build an effective financial plan.
