Leadership is an integral component of the human experience and of practical importance to all. For nearly 25 years, the multiple editions of Hackman and Johnsons outstanding work have been the backbone of leadership courses at hundreds of colleges and universities. The authors extend this tradition of excellence in the Sixth Edition, which continues to serve as a valuable catalyst for generating new insights, debating controversial issues, and contributing to the ongoing dialogue on leading and following. Hackman and Johnson illuminate our understanding of leadership by approaching it as a communication-based activity. They artfully balance research and theory with practical, real-world suggestions for improving communication competence and leadership effectiveness in small-group, organizational, and public contexts. The comprehensive Sixth Edition adds discussions of organizational politics, project leadership, executive-level teams, adaptive leadership, intergroup leadership, sensemaking, and in extremis leadership. Readers will also appreciate the expanded treatment of bad leadership, emotional competencies, followership styles, charisma, leader development, crisis leadership, and virtual team leadership. Case studies cover such timely issues as the pink slime controversy, the legacy of Steve Jobs, banning super-sized soft drinks, the scandal at Penn State University, and the Miracle on the Hudson. Abundant examples, case studies, self-assessments, and research highlights enhance the presentation. Moreover, wide-ranging application exercises offer multiple opportunities for readers to review and apply the skills covered in the chapters.

The third edition of Democratic Latin America retains its classic institutional approach to understand contemporary Latin American politics. Each chapter focuses on a different institution and compares how they are constructed differently across countries. Placing a premium on accessibility, the chapters open with a story and end with a detailed country case study, making use of contemporary examples to feed student interest in current events, with comparison-based tables and box features interspersed throughout to stimulate analysis. Every chapter finishes with a set of questions and recommended readings. This approach allows for a very practical approach to politics that encourages critical analysis. Updates to this new edition include: updated comparison-based tables and box features to stimulate analysis; new "Country in the Spotlight" to include developments unique to each country; and discussions on political change in Cuba, indigenous peoples and political power, neopopulism, impeachment procedures, transitional justice, the 2019 protests, the new militarism, the mobilization of women against violence, LGBT rights, the evangelical movement, and the Colombian peace process. A clear-eyed look at political institutions to provide a roadmap to the political activity in a country, Democratic Latin America continues to offer an original way of teaching and learning about Latin American politics.

The book explores key characteristics of each generation, provides biblical-theological analysis of generational attributes, and offers specific suggestions for ministry.
Linear Optimization and Dualiyy: A Modern Exposition departs from convention in significant ways. Standard linear programming textbooks present the material in the order in which it was discovered. Duality is treated as a difficult add-on after coverage of formulation, the simplex method, and polyhedral theory. Students end up without knowing duality in their bones. This text brings in duality in Chapter 1 and carries duality all the way through the exposition. Chapter 1 gives a general definition of duality that shows the dual aspects of a matrix as a column of rows and a row of columns. The proof of weak duality in Chapter 2 is shown via the Lagrangian, which relies on matrix duality. The first three LP formulation examples in Chapter 3 are classic primal-dual pairs including the diet problem and 2-person zero sum games. For many engineering students, optimization is their first immersion in rigorous mathematics. Conventional texts assume a level of mathematical sophistication they don’t have. This text embeds dozens of reading tips and hundreds of answered questions to guide such students. Features Emphasis on duality throughout Practical tips for modeling and computation Coverage of computational complexity and data structures Exercises and problems based on the learning theory concept of the zone of proximal development Guidance for the mathematically unsophisticated reader About the Author Craig A. Tovey is a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Tovey received an AB from Harvard College, an MS in computer science and a PhD in operations research from Stanford University. His principal activities are in operations research and its interdisciplinary applications. He received a Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Jacob Wolfowitz Prize for research in heuristics. He was named an Institute Fellow at Georgia Tech, and was recognized by the ACM Special Interest Group on Electronic Commerce with the Test of Time Award. Dr. Tovey received the 2016 Golden Goose Award for his research on bee foraging behavior leading to the development of the Honey Bee Algorithm.
The ability of a nation to finance its basic infrastructure is essential to its economic well-being in the 21st century. This second edition of State and Local Financial Instruments covers the municipal securities market in the United States from the perspective of its primary capital financing role in a fiscal federalist system, where subnational governments are responsible for financing the nationÕs essential physical infrastructure.
A helpfully concise commentary on Paul's letter to the early Christians in Rome, which the Apostle wrote just a few years before the outbreak of Nero's persecution. Keener examines each paragraph for its function in the letter as a whole, helping the reader follow Paul's argument. Where relevant, he draws on his vast work in ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman sources in order to help modern readers understand the message of Romans according to the way the first audience would have heard it. Throughout, Keener focuses on major points that are especially critical for the contemporary study of Paul's most influential and complex New Testament letter.
A fascinating look at the industrialization of America, through railroad expansion, in the small Ohio town of Alliance. Includes archival photography and images. According to local history, General Robinson, a railroad official from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, named this Ohio town Alliance in 1850. Known for a short time as The Crossing, Robinson believed that Alliance was a better name since the nation's two major railroads intersected here. The name stuck, and in 1854, the communities of Williamsport, Freedom, and Liberty incorporated as the town of Alliance. In 1889, the Village of Mount Union was annexed and Alliance became a city. Not only did the railroads help form our community, they established Alliance as a city of industry. Even though the town has remained relatively small, with approximately 23,000 citizens in 1990, industry has played a vital role in the development of Alliance. Many citizens attribute the strong leadership of the town's governing body to its industrial growth. This pictorial compilation documents the growth of the railroad and the stores and factories located along these railroad routes. Even today, the availability of trains and the intersection of key lines in Alliance is important to manufacturers.
Drawing on new approaches in comparative politics, Democratic Latin America focuses on analyzing political institutions as a way to assess broader trends in the region’s politics, including the rise of democracy. The text looks at the major institutions–executive, legislature, judiciary, military, and more—in 18 democratic countries to not only provide an expansive view of politics in Latin America but to also facilitate cross-national comparison. Democratic Latin America uniquely surveys the "what” of the region’s politics as well as the “why” and “how” to help students critically consider Latin America’s future.

One of the most difficult questions facing us today is that of the proper attitude toward possessions. In wealthy nations such as Britain and the USA, individuals accumulate much and yet are daily exposed to the plight of the poor, whether the homeless on their own city streets or starving children on their TV screens. What action should they take on behalf of the poor? What should they do with their own possessions? In Neither Poverty nor Riches Craig Blomberg asks what the Bible has to say to these issues. He avoids easy answers, and instead seeks a comprehensive biblical theology of possessions. Beginning with the groundwork laid by the Old Testament and the ideas developed in the intertestamental period, he draws out what the whole New Testament has to say on the subject and finally offers conclusions and applications relevant to the modern world. This is a book that all concerned with issues of poverty and wealth should read.
Craig's study of McAdoo and Baker illuminates the aspirations and struggles of two prominent southern Democrats. In this dual biography, Douglas B. Craig examines the careers of two prominent American public figures, Newton Diehl Baker and William Gibbs McAdoo, whose lives spanned the era between the Civil War and World War II. Both Baker and McAdoo migrated from the South to northern industrial cities and took up professions that had nothing to do with staple-crop agriculture. Both eventually became cabinet officers in the presidential administration of another southerner with personal memories of defeat and Reconstruction: Woodrow Wilson. A Georgian who practiced law and led railroad tunnel construction efforts in New York City, McAdoo served as treasury secretary at a time when Congress passed an income tax, established the Federal Reserve System, and funded the American and Allied war efforts in World War I. Born in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Baker won election as mayor of Cleveland in the early twentieth century and then, as Wilson's secretary of war, supervised the dramatic build-up of the U.S. military when the country entered the Great War in Europe. This is the first full biography of McAdoo and the first since 1961 of Baker. Craig points out similarities and differences in their backgrounds, political activities, professional careers, and family lives. Craig's approach in Progressives at War illuminates the shared struggles, lofty ambitions, and sometimes conflicted interactions of these figures. Their experiences and perspectives on public and private affairs (as insiders who nonetheless were, in some sense, outsiders) make their lives, work, and thought especially interesting. Baker and McAdoo, in league with Wilson, offer Craig the opportunity to deliver a fresh and insightful study of the period, its major issues, and some of its leading figures.
Presents an Australian perspective on the issues in expressive arts in early childhood education by authors who are researching, teaching and actively involved in the arts as theatre directors, painter designers, adjudicators, advisers, actors or arts administrators in community organizations at the national and international level. It constitutes a collective look at the arts and young children. This volume covers a wide spectrum of arts areas, including the roles of the teacher as co-worker, collaborator, guide, facilitator and stage-manager; the tertiary educator in indigenous art, improvizational drama, and movement and dance; and the early childhood adviser in national, non-commercial television production. In addition, there is discussion on the national broadcasting standards required for children's commercial television production in Australia, the value of language and literature in the lives of young children and experimental programmes for theatre companies and symphony orchestras.

“A hobbyist’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and attention to detail exude from this technological history of Ohio’s streetcar industry . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice At the beginning of the twentieth century, the street railway industry was one of the largest in the nation. Once ubiquitously visible on the city streets, by mid-century the streetcar was nothing more than a distant memory. Ohio was home to several large streetcar systems, especially in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and had more interurban tracks than any other state in the union. Thus, Ohio served as one of the street railway industry’s greatest centers of manufacturing. Built to Move Millions examines the manufacture of streetcars and interurbans within the state of Ohio between 1900 and 1940. In addition to discussing the five major car builders that were active in Ohio during this period, the book addresses Ohio companies that manufactured the various components that went into these vehicles. Includes extensive photos

Do miracles still happen today? This book demonstrates that miraculous works of God, which have been part of the experience of the church around the world since Christianity began, continue into the present. Leading New Testament scholar Craig Keener addresses common questions about miracles and provides compelling reasons to believe in them today, including many accounts that offer evidence of verifiable miracles. This book gives an accessible and concise overview of one of Keener's most significant research topics. His earlier two-volume work on miracles stands as the definitive word on the topic, but its size and scope are daunting to many readers. This new book summarizes Keener's basic argument but contains substantial new material, including new accounts of the miraculous. It is suitable as a textbook but also accessible to church leaders and laypeople.
Challenges to the reliability of Scripture are perennial and have frequently been addressed. However, some of these challenges are noticeably more common today, and the topic is currently of particular interest among evangelicals. In this volume, highly regarded biblical scholar Craig Blomberg offers an accessible and nuanced argument for the Bible's reliability in response to the extreme views about Scripture and its authority articulated by both sides of the debate. He believes that a careful analysis of the relevant evidence shows we have reason to be more confident in the Bible than ever before. As he traces his own academic and spiritual journey, Blomberg sketches out the case for confidence in the Bible in spite of various challenges to the trustworthiness of Scripture, offering a positive, informed, and defensible approach.
Ubiquitous and enigmatic, the historical Lincoln, the literary Lincoln, even the cinematic Lincoln have all proved both fascinating and irresistible. Though some 16,000 books have been written about him, there is always more to say, new aspects of his life to consider, new facets of his persona to explore. Enlightening and entertaining, Exploring Lincoln offers a selection of sixteen papers presented at the Lincoln Forum symposia over the past three years. Shining new light on particular aspects of Lincoln and his tragically abbreviated presidency, Exploring Lincoln presents a compelling snapshot of current Lincoln scholarship and a fascinating window into understanding America’s greatest president.
