What can we learn about the world from engaging with fictional time-series--stories involving time travellers, recurring and rewinding time, and foreknowledge of the future? Do they show us radical alternative possibilities concerning the nature of time, or do they show that even the impossible can be represented in fiction? Neither, so this book argues. Defending the view that a fiction represents a single possible world, the authors show how apparentrepresentations of radically different time-series can be explained in terms of how worlds are represented without there being any fictional world which has such a time-series. In this way, the book uses thecomplexities of fictional time to get to the core of the relation between truth in fiction and possibility. It provides a logic and metaphysics to deal with the fact that fictions can leave certain features of their fictional worlds indefinite, and draws comparisons and connections between fictional and scientific representations and hypotheses.
This is one doctor who’s permanently booked up. Dr. Victor Sullivan was one of the most popular physicians in the small town of Whitby, North Carolina. He wrote a prescription for trust with his attentive care and compassionate bedside manner. But when the doctor's own story takes a deadly twist, librarian Ann Beckett finds herself in the center of a medical mystery that's anything but routine. As Ann steps into the investigation, she uncovers hidden chapters in Dr. Wilson's life that cast a shadow of suspicion over those he once called friends. With each clue discovered, Ann becomes less startled by the doctor's untimely demise. Can Ann close the book on this mystery before someone else has a final chapter?
Winner for the UK in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2020 in the Mediterranean category. Provence is the fruit and vegetable garden of France, where much of its most beautiful produce is grown. These ingredients combined with Provence's unique identity, position and history have resulted in a cuisine full of heart, balance and soul, a cuisine that showcases its peoples' reverence for the produce, the changing seasons and the land. Caroline Rimbert Craig's maternal family hail from the southern foothills of Mont Ventoux, where the sun beats hard and dry, but aromatic herbs, vines and fruit trees prosper. This is her guide to cooking the Provençal way, for those who want to eat simply but well, who love to cook dishes that rhyme with the seasons, and who want to recreate the flavours of the Mediterranean at home, wherever that may be.
How black and Latino youth learn, create, and collaborate online The Digital Edge examines how the digital and social-media lives of low-income youth, especially youth of color, have evolved amidst rapid social and technological change. While notions of the digital divide between the “technology rich” and the “technology poor” have largely focused on access to new media technologies, the contours of the digital divide have grown increasingly complex. Analyzing data from a year‐long ethnographic study at Freeway High School, the authors investigate how the digital media ecologies and practices of black and Latino youth have adapted as a result of the wider diffusion of the internet all around us--in homes, at school, and in the palm of our hands. Their eager adoption of different technologies forge new possibilities for learning and creating that recognize the collective power of youth: peer networks, inventive uses of technology, and impassioned interests that are remaking the digital world. Relying on nearly three hundred in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and parents, and hundreds of hours of observation in technology classes and after school programs, The Digital Edge carefully documents some of the emergent challenges for creating a more equitable digital and educational future. Focusing on the complex interactions between race, class, gender, geography and social inequality, the book explores the educational perils and possibilities of the expansion of digital media into the lives and learning environments of low-income youth. Ultimately, the book addresses how schools can support the ability of students to develop the social, technological, and educational skills required to navigate twenty-first century life.

At the height of the hair-metal craze, when the airwaves were dominated by ear-shredding guitar solos played by men clad in lace gloves, cowboy boots, and tight denim, when Aqua Net was more precious than gold, when MTV actually played music videos and not just shows like Pimp My Locker, a band named Onyxxx (one X wasn’t nearly enough) came close to making it big. What stopped Onyxxx from taking its place beside legendary bands like Poison, Guns N’ Roses, and Mötley Crüe? Sex, drugs, groupies, . . . and geometry homework. Craig Williams, Onyxxx’s red-haired, head-banging guitarist, tells his tale of near rock stardom in Mom, Have You Seen My Leather Pants? With a manager who was a dead ringer for Loni Anderson, club owners willing to offer sexual favors and limo rides, and scads of California girls lifting their shirts and screaming their names, Craig knew what it was to be a star—until he realized that Onyxxx wasn’t the second coming of Warrant. They just weren’t that good. And Craig wasn’t having fun anymore. A music memoir for any child of the 1980s and ’90s, a nostalgic trip down Sunset Strip, and a hilarious tribute to a musical era we can only hope will never have a resurgence, Mom, Have You Seen My Leather Pants? will give you an appetite for destruction.
Here's what reviewers are saying about Bill Craig's new Chandler mystery series: "A gritty urban fast-paced investigative mystery..." "Quick action, intertwining plots and lots of reason to turn the next page...." The investigation flies at a pace that kept me turning the pages ..." "Written in a "Pulp Fiction" style that flits from character to character, showing what's happening away from the eyes of the hero and then touches base back at his investigation before charging into the villains' action again. And in that same writing style, the story comes together and the pieces of the puzzle start clicking together. The book is well crafted, keeping the investigator just a step behind the madness of the evil that pervades an Indiana city." "The 'Circle' is definitely made up of hell-on-wheels criminals. Bad guys you will love to hate, and dames in distress. A hero worth launching a series for. Five stars." "Very readable ..." Phillip Chandler is a hardboiled private eye working Indianapolis -- called Circle City for the towering war memorial in the circular drive at its center. Here he sets out to prove a pro basketball player didn't kill his girlfriend. As it turns out, there are lots of other suspects to pick from, dangerous bad guys who inhabit Circle City.

For his exemplary courage under fire, Trevor received one of Germany’s highest honors—the Cross of the Order of Merit. I have developed a super easy, highly effective and instant results thought system called ThinkHappy. ThinkHappy is based on thought technology, the sacred teachings of the Pauline writings and based on the very fabric of our biological makeup known as neural networks (or as I call it “memory mapping”) that perform specific jobs. Neural networks are neurons that associate or connect to each other. Connections are known as synapses or as I like to think of them “behavioral buttons” with the primary function of transmitting information signals. Our “memory mapping” and “behavioral buttons” are key components of a two part system, the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system which controls behavior. I call this two part system - the “habit habitat.” The Habit Habitat houses patterns and routines. ThinkHappy is designed to re-script, reprogram and reverse negative patterns and routines within the “habit habitat” with positive scripts and programming by rehearsing beneficial behavior instead of detrimental behavior. It incorporates the science and mechanics of happiness along with affirmations, meditations, life scenarios and benefits that allows a person to go on a mental journey of celebrating who they are in their thought life. When this is successful, one can manifest that very same celebration in their day to day life. The fantastic aspect of ThinkHappy is that there are Nine Thought Paths to Happiness which a person can venture all nine daily. Depending on preference, you can also venture in a thought path per day for a series of nine days or a thought path per week for a series of nine weeks or even a thought path per month for a series of nine months. Not only is ThinkHappy accessible it’s time efficient requiring only nine minutes of reflection per day. That’s only fifty-six minutes per week and three and a half hours per month. ThinkHappy is uniquely designed with each short version affirmation to be repeated nine times for maximum results. The number nine is the special key in this thought system as it symbolizes achievement in numerology. The Nine Thought Paths to Happiness are: Love, Belief, Truth, Worth, Good, Inspiration, Health, Wealth and BIG. No longer will people be able to “push the right buttons” to set you off in a negative way. ThinkHappy targets your trigger buttons; those negative “behavioral buttons” by simply asking you to ask yourself what are the things you can do to make yourself and others happier. This is a simple but successful exercise that allows you to construct your habitat with nine transforming habits that over time will hardwire into your system becoming automatic day in and day out.

Every man desires to be a hero for the woman he loves; however, very few are presented the opportunity. Col. James P. Gordon is one of those men. Early on, the younger Air Force captain, Jim Gordon, met and fell in love with Samantha Marissen, the woman who brought him to Jesus Christ and the daughter of Edward Marissen, CEO of Marissen AeroSpace. After more than twenty years, the now retired Air Force pilot is thrust into such a position as personal and world events collide, crossing the paths of the lost loves once again. Recently divorced from an emotionally and physically abusive man, Samantha Marissen fled the country as a means of escape and relief from the horrors of the legal destruction of her character but is arrested in an unstable foreign land and charged as a spy in an unwarranted retaliatory act against the United States. She is held captive for trial far from her estranged family with only the protection of a sympathetic soldier and her love of God. James Gordon, a man with no family, yet still strong in his faith, lays his life on the line to bring Samantha home. Her time of captivity and his period of training prove their love still strong as both overcome serious obstacles to remain alive. Unknown to Samantha is the love and concern of friends she thought long-forgotten who pray for her safe return with James Gordon.

Deterrence of market manipulation is central to the entire regulatory and legal framework governing the operation of American commodity futures markets. However, despite all of the regulatory, scholarly, and legal scrutiny of market manipulation, the subject is widely misunderstood. Federal commodity and securities laws prohibit manipulation, but do not define it. Scholarly research has failed to analyze adequately the causes or effects of manipulation, and the relevant judicial decisions are confused, confusing, and contradictory. The aim of this book is to illuminate the process of market manipulation by presenting a rigorous economic analysis of this phenomenon, including the conditions that facilitate it and its effects on market users and others. The conclusions of this analysis are used to examine critically some legal and regulatory anti-manipulation policies. The Economics, Law and Public Policy of Market Power Manipulation concludes with a set of robust and realistic tests that regulators and jurists can apply to detect and deter manipulation.
