In this project, Courtney Brannon Donoghue follows female-driven film projects ("starring, written, produced, and/or directed by women") and the women creating them from pitch to premiere, looking at all the unique challenges they face along the way. She focuses on the ways that industry lore (e.g., "female-led movies don't make money" or "female directors don't have the experience (or desire) to direct big-budget action blockbusters") and established business practices serve to limit women's options or co-opt their stories, using a wide range of research, from conducting extensive interviews and participant observation to engaging with marketing materials, trade publications, and industry studies. She began her research in 2016, shortly before the #MeToo movement dramatically changed the public conversation, which has allowed her to give readers a front-row seat to this hopefully transformative moment in the industry. Throughout, she aims "to connect larger conversations about the industry's historic gendered division of labor and changing notions of 'women's work' to the lived experiences of film professionals negotiating larger structural barriers alongside changing institutional cultures.""--

As a play staging political crises provoked by the arrival of the "foreign" god Dionysus and his ecstatic cult, audiences and readers found resonances with their own cultural moments. This dramatic deity became emblematic of exuberant and liberating spirituality and, at the same time, a symbol of imperial conquest. Thus, readings of the Bacchae frequently foreground conflicts between religious autonomy and political authority, and between ethnic diversity and social cohesion. This cross-disciplinary study traces appropriations and evocations of this drama ranging from the fifth century BCE through Byzantium not only among "pagans" but also Jews and Christians. Writers variously articulated their religious visions over against Dionysus, often while paradoxically adopting the god's language and symbols. The EBCI has an especially long history of incorporated, citizen-owned businesses located on their lands. When many people think of Indigenous-owned businesses, they stop with prominent casino gaming operations or natural-resource intensive enterprises. But on the Qualla Boundary today, Indigenous entrepreneurship and economic independence extends to art galleries, restaurants, a bookstore, a funeral parlor, and more. Lewis's fieldwork followed these businesses through the Great Recession and against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding EBCI-owned casino. Finalist for the 2022 Cheiron Book Prize An Organ of Murder explores the origins of both popular and elite theories of criminality in the nineteenth-century United States, focusing in particular on the influence of phrenology. In the United States, phrenology shaped the production of medico-legal knowledge around crime, the treatment of the criminal within prisons and in public discourse, and sociocultural expectations about the causes of crime. The criminal was phrenology’s ideal research and demonstration subject, and the courtroom and the prison were essential spaces for the staging of scientific expertise. In particular, phrenology constructed ways of looking as well as a language for identifying, understanding, and analyzing criminals and their actions. This work traces the long-lasting influence of phrenological visual culture and language in American culture, law, and medicine, as well as the practical uses of phrenology in courts, prisons, and daily life.
