Inspired by movies the missionaries showed in Casamance, Senegal (NW Africa), Abdalla Ndao has attended film school at NYU and is now working on a documentary film. He wonders about Nowace, the gem he left behind. He is not aware that she has been sending him monthly letters-even though she has received no reply to any of them. When the Ndao farmland is used as a test case, Abdalla must return to Casamance, find a lawyer, and raise the question as to the reasons the government has fenced the property. Once in town, however, he wonders if he can find Nowace Waldo and whether she even remembers him from eight years ago. Meanwhile, people encourage Abdalla to boost his documentary to a feature film. When he asks his former professor about this, the man cautions Abdalla not to make any family move or large changes in life. It's too risky to raise another three million dollars in the late 1960s. Courtney Alexander Williams completes his second novel of a trilogy. His first book, Faithful Brothers? begins with the youngest brother discovering diamonds in the peanut crops and fencing them in the local market. The elder brother is in New York at film school. The younger brother links up with unsavory elements. Meanwhile, the government pursues the family. In From Africa with Love, the elder brother now needs to go back to Africa to retain the family farmland. These stories grow out of Williams's experience of living as an adopted son with a family in Senegal, Africa. Williams is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and Actors' Equity Association (AEA). Although he lives in and around the New York City area, he has also trained in Los Angeles. He has performed in over a dozen movies, nearly a dozen television programs, and half-dozen off-Broadway theater productions.

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is an enzyme that degrades the essential amino acid tryptophan independent of the process that maintains normal tryptophan homeostasis. In recent years, interest in IDO and the tryptophan catabolic pathway it feeds into has grown rapidly with the discovery that IDO activity is critical for generating tolerance to foreign antigens in a variety of tissue microenvironments. In cancer, IDO is overexpressed in both tumor cells and stromal cells where it promotes the establishment of peripheral tolerance to tumor antigens. By helping tumor cells escape T-cell-dependent immune attack, IDO contributes to pathogenic inflammatory states which permit tumor survival and outgrowth. In preclinical studies, small molecule inhibitors of IDO can reverse this mechanism of immune escape. Notably, in combinatorial treatment regimens, IDO inhibition strongly leverages the efficacy of classical cancer chemotherapeutic agents, causing the regression of tumors that are otherwise largely resistant to treatment. Based on these findings, clinical evaluation of IDO inhibitors for cancer treatment is currently ongoing. After presenting a historical background on the discovery and early studies of this enzyme, this chapter focuses on work that defines IDO as an important mediator of pathogenic inflammation and cancer, and summarizes the development of IDO inhibitors as potential anticancer modalities.

Promises of indemnity are found in many kinds of commercial contracts, not just contracts of insurance. This book examines the nature and effect of contractual indemnities outside the insurance context. It is the first work to provide a detailed account of the subject in English law. The book presents a coherent theory of the promise of indemnity while also addressing important practical issues, such as the construction of contractual indemnities. The subject is approached from two perspectives. The foundations are laid by examining general principles applicable to indemnities in various forms. This covers the nature of indemnity promises; general principles of construction; the determination of scope; and the enforcement of indemnities. The approach then moves from the general to the specific, by examining separately particular forms of indemnity. Included among these are indemnities against liability to third parties, and indemnities against default or non-performance by third parties. The book states English law but it draws upon a considerable amount of material from other common law jurisdictions, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore. It will appeal to readers from those countries.

It earnestly affirmed that figurative language provided crucial tools for interpreting the divinely written world. Smith recovers this empiricism in Robert Boyle’s analogies, Isaac Newton’s metaphors, John Locke’s narratives, Joseph Addison’s personifications, Daniel Defoe’s diction, John Gay’s periphrases, and Alexander Pope’s descriptive particulars. She thereby demonstrates that "literary" language played a key role in shaping and giving voice to the concerns of eighteenth-century science and religion alike. Empiricist Devotions combines intellectual history with close readings of a wide variety of texts, from sermons, devotional journals, and economic tracts to georgic poems, it-narratives, and microscopy treatises. This prizewinning book has important implications for our understanding of cultural and literary history, as scholars of the period’s science have not fully appreciated figurative language’s central role in empiricist thought, while scholars of its religion and literature have neglected the serious empiricist commitments motivating richly figurative devotional and poetic texts. The Struggle over Human Rights: The Non-Aligned Movement, Jimmy Carter, and Neoliberalism traces the origins of the relationship between neoliberalism and the modern doctrine of human rights to the 1970s. It uses empirical evidence to prove that the Carter administration transformed the U.S., and the traditional Western liberal approach to human rights, in response, in part, to the actions of the Non-Aligned Movement. The New International Economic Order (NIEO), a high-point in Non-Aligned solidarity, placed pressures on the power relations of the international system and sought to advance the social and economic rights of the Third World. Carter’s transformation promoted civil and political rights as the only acceptable “human” rights and relegated economic rights to a “basic needs” approach, undercutting welfare state principles in the U.S. and in the newly emergent independent states in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. This doctrine, as the book highlights through extensive archival research, sharpened the definition of international human rights to serve the maintenance of the U.S.-led world order. Carter’s diplomatic use of human rights obfuscated exploitative economic structures and paved the way for an aggressive neoliberal transformation through World Bank and IMF Structural Adjustment Programs under Reagan. Historical studies of human rights have ignored these connections, making this book a unique contribution to the scholarship of human rights.

The book is edited by three recognised world leaders in clinical research into manual therapy and chronic pain. Their research activities are concentrated on the evidence-based management of musculoskeletal pain conditions using conservative interventions.
