Colm Lennon's Sixteenth-Century Ireland, the second instalment in the New Gill History of Ireland series, looks at how the Tudor conquest of Ireland by Henry VIII and the country's colonisation by Protestant settlers led to the incomplete conquest of Ireland, laying the foundations for the sectarian conflict that persists to this day. In 1500, most of Ireland lay outside the ambit of English royal power. Only a small area around Dublin, The Pale, was directly administered by the crown. The rest of the island was run in more or less autonomous fashion by Anglo-Norman magnates or Gaelic chieftains. By 1600, there had been a huge extension of English royal power. First, the influence of the semi-independent magnates was broken; second, in the 1590s crown forces successfully fought a war against the last of the old Gaelic strongholds in Ulster. The secular conquest of Ireland was, therefore, accomplished in the course of the century. But the Reformation made little headway. The Anglo-Norman community remained stubbornly Catholic, as did the Gaelic nation. Their loss of political influence did not result in the expropriation of their lands. Most property still remained in Catholic hands. England's failure to effect a revolution in church as well as in state meant that the conquest of Ireland was incomplete. The seventeenth century, with its wars of religion, was the consequence. Dublin, part II, 1610 to 1756 is the nineteenth in the Irish Historic Towns Atlas series and one of four parts of Dublin tracing the city from its earliest times to 1900. It assembles the topographical documentations on the development of Irish towns and publishes them as individual fascicles.
The Irish Historic Towns Atlas (IHTA) is producing a Dublin suburbs series of atlases in collaboration with Dublin City Council. The first five suburbs to be completed in this scheme will be Clontarf by Colm Lennon, Rathmines by Seamus Ó Maitiú, Drumcondra by Ruth McManus, Inchicore/Kilmainham by Frank Cullen and Ringsend/Sandymount by Jacinta Prunty.This series will be published in a new format but will complement the atlas series, enabling them to be compared to other towns atlases already published. There are numerous historic and modern maps, illustrations and photographs as well as an accompanying essay and individual histories of topographic sites in Clontarf from earliest times up to c. 1970.

Understanding Physics – Second edition is a comprehensive, yet compact, introductory physics textbook aimed at physics undergraduates and also at engineers and other scientists taking a general physics course. Written with today's students in mind, this text covers the core material required by an introductory course in a clear and refreshing way. Colm Michael O’Driscoll was born in 1971 in Ireland. He has had a passion for writing from an early age, developing a unique forthright style by composing multitudes of poems and scripts in his bedroom throughout his teenage years. Working with the public, helped him empathise with the many of the masses who encounter difficulties that go unseen or unheard, whilst realising his own shortcomings. He moved to Madrid in 2012, where he lives and works as an English Teacher.
