Sharing the sometimes bittersweet, sometimes unexpected, always insightful accounts of the lives of some of the NHL's most famous players after retirement and the turns their lives have taken--often just as wild and crazy as their time on the ice--this collection of poignant stories details the hockey's greatest players after the last goal has been tended and the final buzzer sounds. Through in-depth one-on-one interviews, the book offers vivid and captivating portraits of nine hockey greats, profiling heroes such as Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, and Eric Nesterenko, and it chronicles the struggles and triumphs that came after a life on the ice.
Therapy with Children and Young People addresses the practice of child therapy in school settings in a unique level of detail. The authors adopt a broad ecosystematic, integrative approach that considers the influence of family, school and the wider community, placing emphasis on significant development and attachment issues. As well as providing a solid ground in developmental theory, the authors explore the contextual and professional issues of working in a school setting. A wide range of activities and exercises (including using the creative arts to engage with young people through play, story, metaphor and imagery) help you to apply theory to practice in a new way. Challenging ethical dilemmas, such as sharing sensitive information and communicating with parents and teachers, are explored with the support of lively case studies. Covering therapy with children from infant to secondary school, this book will be your essential resource if you wish to work therapeutically in schools.
Many bibliographers focus on women who write. Lawyer Barnett looks at women who detect, at women as sleuths and at the evolving roles of women in professions and in society. Excellent for all women's studies programs as well as for the mystery hound. Look at the popularity of such reading guides as Willetta Heising's Detecting Women (3rd ed. 0-9644593-7-X) or Amanda Cross' fiction (Honest Doubt 0-345-44011-0 11/00).

This guide to coaching female athletes of all ages shows how to build a team and provides invaluable advice on the differences between coaching males and females. Colleen Glenney Boggs puts animal representation at the center of the making of the liberal American subject. Concentrating on the formative and disruptive presence of animals in the writings of Frederick Douglass, Edgar Allan Poe, and Emily Dickinson, Boggs argues that animals are critical to the ways in which Americans enact their humanity and regulate subjects in the biopolitical state. Biopower, or a politics that extends its reach to life, thrives on the strategic ambivalence between who is considered human and what is judged as animal. It generates a space of indeterminacy in which animal representations intervene to define and challenge the parameters of subjectivity. The renegotiation of the species line produces a tension that is never fully regulated. Therefore, as both figures of radical alterity and the embodiment of biopolitics, animals are simultaneously exceptional and exemplary to the biopolitical state. An original contribution to animal studies, American studies, critical race theory, and posthumanist inquiry, Boggs thrillingly reinterprets a long and highly contentious human-animal history.

Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Evidence-Based Education in the Classroom: Examples From Clinical Disciplines shows educators how to use evidence to inform teaching practices and improve educational outcomes for students in clinically based fields of study. Editors and speech-language pathologists Drs. Jennifer C. Friberg, Colleen F. Visconti, and Sarah M. Ginsberg collaborated with a team of more than 65 expert contributors to share examples of how they have used evidence to inform their course design and delivery. Each chapter is set up as a case study that includes: A description of the teaching/learning context focused on in the chapter A brief review of original data or extant literature being applied A description of how evidence was applied in the teaching/learning context Additional ideas for how evidence could be applied in other teaching/learning contexts across clinical disciplines Additional resources related to the pedagogy described in the case study (e.g., journal articles, books, blogs, websites) Educators in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, nursing, social work, sports medicine, medicine, dietetics, dental assisting, physician assisting, radiology technology, psychology, and kinesiology—already familiar with evidence-based practice—will find this resource helpful in implementing evidence-informed approaches to their teaching. While the content in clinical programs is quite different, there are many similarities in how to teach students across such programs. Evidence-Based Education in the Classroom: Examples From Clinical Disciplines highlights these similarities and represents a masterclass in how to practice evidence-based education.

Masked and costume balls thrived in Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries during a period of rich literary and theatrical experimentation. The first study of its kind, The Modernist Masquerade examines the cultural history of masquerades in Russia and their representations in influential literary works. The masquerade's widespread appearance as a literary motif in works by such writers as Anna Akhmatova, Leonid Andreev, Andrei Bely, Aleksandr Blok, and Fyodor Sologub mirrored its popularity as a leisure-time activity and illuminated its integral role in the Russian modernist creative consciousness. Colleen McQuillen charts how the political, cultural, and personal significance of lavish costumes and other forms of self-stylizing evolved in Russia over time. She shows how their representations in literature engaged in dialog with the diverse aesthetic trends of Decadence, Symbolism, and Futurism and with the era's artistic philosophies.

Curling legend Colleen Jones opens up about her extraordinary career and life Curling is possibly the most beloved sport across Canada, and Colleen Jones has been one of its brightest stars. She was only nineteen years old when she won her first provincial championship, and she became the youngest skip, at age twenty-two, ever to win the Canadian women's curling championship: the Tournament of Hearts. She went on to win it a total of six times, with an unprecedented four in a row in the early 2000s, along with her two world championships. No other women’s team has matched that record. Here, she tells the stories of her remarkable career—from the pure joy of the game to outworking her competition, year after year, always striving to be just a little bit better. But Colleen’s story is about more than a love of curling. As a champion at the pinnacle of her sport, as a popular CBC broadcaster, and as a mother of two, Colleen Jones seemed to have it all. Then a serious illness struck, and threatened ti rob her of all she had worked for. But Colleen, determined as ever, emerged with a renewed love of life and a powerful message about achieving authentic personal fulfillment. Throwing Rocks at Houses is a candid, charming and thoughtful story about rising to the top only to learn how easily it can all be taken away. Whether career, family, or personal health, her amazing journey reveals, more than anything, all that matters most in life.

When the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution authorized women’s suffrage in 1920, it was the culmination of decades of work by women who had fought to be considered equal to men under the law. Accompanied by primary source documents, this resource chronicles the birth of the women’s rights movement at Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848; the suffragists’ sometimes-contentious partnership with the abolitionist movement; and the slow build toward national suffrage. The efforts of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and other important leaders are recognized.
In so doing, they shed new light on both the private and public dimensions of western culture. This second edition includes a substantial new preface relating the book to changing views of life after death in the new century."--BOOK JACKET.
Although sometimes decried by pundits, George W. Bush?s use of moral and religious rhetoric is far from unique in the American presidency. Throughout history and across party boundaries, presidents have used such appeals, with varying degrees of political success. The Moral Rhetoric of American Presidents astutely analyzes the president?s role as the nation?s moral spokesman.?Armed with quantitative methods from political science and the qualitative case study approach prevalent in rhetorical studies, Colleen J. Shogan demonstrates that moral and religious rhetoric is not simply a reflection of individual character or an expression of American "civil religion" but a strategic tool presidents can use to enhance their constitutional authority.?To determine how the use of moral rhetoric has changed over time, Shogan employs content analysis of the inaugural and annual addresses of all the presidents from George Washington through George W. Bush. This quantitative evidence shows that while presidents of both parties have used moral and religious arguments, the frequency has fluctuated considerably and the language has become increasingly detached from relevant policy arguments.?Shogan explores the political effects of the rhetorical choices presidents make through nine historical cases (Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Buchanan, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Carter). She shows that presidents who adapt their rhetoric to the political conditions at hand enhance their constitutional authority, while presidents who ignore political constraints suffer adverse political consequences. The case studies allow Shogan to highlight the specific political circumstances that encourage or discourage the use of moral rhetoric.?Shogan concludes with an analysis of several dilemmas of governance instigated by George W. Bush?s persistent devotion to moral and religious argumentation.
