Patrons, Clients, and Empire challenges the stereotypes of despotic imperial power in Asian, African, and Pacific colonies by analysing the relationship between rulers and rulers on both sides of the imperial equation. It seeks an answer to the question: how were European officials able to govern so many societies for so long? Rejecting the usual explanations of 'collaboration' and indirect rule', this study looks to pre-imperial structures in the indigenous hierarchies which supplied patrimonial models of chieftaincy for territorial government. For nawabs, chiefs, emirs, sultans, and their officials and followers there were dynastic and economic advantages in accepting the terms of European over-rule, as well as the threat of deposition. For European officials, few in numbers and with limited military and financial resources, there were ready-made systems of local government that could be co-opted, reformed, or left relatively untouched. Both sides played politics as patrons and clients within a dual system of administration based on a mixture of force and self-interest. Surveying a wide variety of cases and employing a patron-client model, this study embraces pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial politics in new states. It covers the chronology of early European dependency on local rulers; the reasons for reversal of status among chiefs and administrators; the longer period of political bargaining over access to local resources in terms of land, labour, and taxes; and the ultimate fate of indigenous rulers in the period of party politics leading to independence.

It was the " American Menace" according to the Scottish and English newspapers of the 1920s. The best players in the Scottish leagues were being drawn to American companies that offered good jobs in return for playing on the company soccer team. The resulting squads, many of them ethnic, beat the best teams in the world at that time. This period from 1921 to 1931 were the "Golden Years of American Soccer." With the skyrocketing economic prosperity of the United States and its corollary flood of new immigrants to America's shores, came interest in soccer as a new form of sports entertainment. It grew rapidly around Northeastern industrial towns like Fall River, Massachusetts, and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. As with the popular North American Soccer League of the 1970s and 80s and its imported stars like Pele, the American Soccer League of the 1920s bid for the best soccer players in the world, creating a competitive, fertile environment for the growth of soccer. Unfortunately, few detailed records remain about these great teams and players. League records were lost after W.W. II and newspaper coverage was concentrated in smaller cities. Many of the League's heretofore unknown players possess no first name in print, and the unfortunate losers of matches and league championship games often went unreported altogether. During the later, tougher years of the Depression, many of the foreign players hunkered down in jobs or returned to their native countries. The disbanded American Soccer League was revived under the same name but very different circumstances in 1933, but never reached the same level of skill as during the 1920s. American Soccer League 1921-1931 is the result of Colin Jose's tireless determination to provide accurate history of soccer's evolution in the United States. Scotland provided two Territorial Force divisions at the outbreak of the First World War, in due course taking their place in the order of battle as the 51st (Highland) Division and the 52nd (Lowland) Division. 1066 and All That concluded that the war was won by the Americans, assisted by the Australians (AZTECS) and some Canadians, and 51 Highlanders. If nothing else, this ironic analysis showed that Major General George (Uncle, sometimes Daddy) Harper was a master of positive publicity and knew its value in building the Divisions image and morale. He commanded the Division from late September 1915 until shortly before the opening of the German Spring Offensive in March 1918, when he was promoted to the command of IV Corps; his name is firmly linked to the 51st.The Division arrived in France in May 1915 and took part in a limited (and unsuccessful) attack in French Flanders in June 1915, which revealed hardly surprising weaknesses in training. The next year was spent relatively quietly on the Somme and, from March 1916, the southern end of Vimy Ridge. Thereafter it fought on the Somme at High Wood and Beaumont-Hamel, at the Battle of Arras, at Third Ypres, Cambrai, faced two of the German spring offensives of 1918 and was then involved in the successful series of allied offensives that ended the war, in the Divisions case starting with an attack with the French and the Italians in the Champagne in July 1918.No history of the Division has been written since Brewshers in 1921. This book aims to cast a more objective light on its activities and to challenge its post war critics. It makes full use of official records and first hand accounts, including those provided by descendants with previously unpublished family records or illustrations. The books main purpose is to pay tribute to a generation that met hitherto unimagined horrors with fortitude, adaptability, resilience and humour and, despite the awful price in lives, broken bodies and minds, carried on until the job was done.

It argues that a kind of conservative US nationalism long predates the Trump presidency, and goes back to the American founding. Different aspects of conservative American nationalism have been incorporated into the Republican Party from its creation. Every Republican president since Theodore Roosevelt has tried to balance elements of this tradition with global US foreign policy priorities. Donald Trump was able to win his party's nomination and rise to the presidency, in part, by challenging liberal internationalist assumptions. Yet in practice, he too has combined nationalist assumptions with global US foreign policy priorities. The long-term trend within the Republican party, predating Trump, is toward political populism, cultural conservatism, and white working-class voters -- and this has international implications. Since this provides the one opportunity for conventionality that the volume as a whole opens up, it would be churlish of me to decline. A preface normally includes, I am told, an indication of both the reason that underlies the volume's very existence and the individuals to whom the volume is directed. But part of the reason for the volume's existence lies, strange though it may seem, in communicating the reason for the volume's existence. Since prefaces generally go unread, I would be remiss if I attempted that communication here. Instead, I have left the attempt to the Introduction and Key, which I believe has a better chance of being read. Let us be willing to settle, for the moment, on the truly fundamental fact that the volume was prepared because I was prepared to prepare it and a publisher was prepared to publish it. As to the intended readers; they too, must wait for their identification in the Introduction and Key, unless they are willing to settle at this point on an identification as those who might be ready to read what I was prepared to prepare.

When Colin Barron and Vivien Thompson first met, it was love at first sight. Both were forty-two, had attended Glasgow University, and shared many interests. In 2002, the couple married. Colin had a dream job as a self-employed hypnotherapist while Vivien worked as a learning-support teacher. They had a blissful marriage based on mutual respect and intellectual parity. Then in May 2011, Vivien collapsed at home with a massive stroke caused by a heart tumour that the NHS had failed to diagnose. Though her life was saved by a brilliant cardiac surgeon, Vivien was left with severe disabilities, little speech, and partial blindness. Her husband realized that the tragedy had been caused by inadequate investigation and helped Vivien claim compensation. Just after the case was settled in 2015, Colin himself had a massive heart attack and nearly died three times. Miraculously, he survived. A Life by Misadventure is a story of two peoples struggle against impossible odds. It is also a great love story, a tale of a love between two people, which would not die. Instead of dying, the love actually got stronger.

Convinced that Napoleon was about to declare war once more, the British Government ordered a secret press of seamen in 1803. This book records how the ensuring events affected one man in particular, Joesph Bates, a 21-year old merchant seaman who proved to be of exceptional ability rising to the rank of lieutenant. The book is based largely on the logs of the two ships in which he sailed, the frigate, HMS Cerberus, and the sloop of war, HMS Racoon, supplemented by eye-witness accounts, official letters, medical notes and the secret diary of one of Joseph's shipmates. Pressed in Chatham on 6th May, a few days before Britain declared war on France, he spent the next 12 years before his release from the Royal Navy. The author brings to life the detail of everyday events on board as Joseph is promoted from able seaman servicing in the foretop to coxswain, quartermaster, midshipman, master's mate and lieutenant. Joseph's service, however, was full of more dramatic events: deaths by drowning, falls from the rigging, cholera or tuberculosis. He was engaged in battles, attacks on the French coast, the capture of a town in the Caribbean, an explosion in the Racoon that killed many of the crew and the near-sinking of the ship. But there were lighter moments: the celebrations on crossing the Equator and riding horses borrowed from the Mexican army. One highlight found in the secret diary of a shipmate is his single-handed attempt to transport a very large hog back to the ship. After 'capturing' the last American fort on the Pacific coast, Joseph's ship sailed to Hawaii and Tahiti, hunting American shipping. Her mission completed, Racoon once more rounded to the Horn and as a final duty escorted a convoy back to England. Joseph's service was ended.
