This book provides a historical account of the discovery in 1834 of a remarkable singular wave that was ultimately to lead to the development of modern soliton theory with its diverse physical applications. In terms of associated geometry, the classical work of Bäcklund and Bianchi and its consequences is recounted, notably with regard to nonlinear superposition principles, which later were shown to be generic to soliton systems and which provide the analytic description of complex multi-soliton interaction. Whereas the applications of modern soliton in certain areas of physics are well-documented, deep connections between soliton theory and nonlinear continuum mechanics have had a separate development. This book describes wide applications in such disparate areas as elastostatics, elastodynamics, superelasticity, shell theory, magnetohydrostatics and magnetohydrodynamics, and will appeal to research scientists and advanced students with an interest in integrable systems in nonlinear physics or continuum mechanics.
This my second book on the life story of my favourite aunt was then conceived and it has been a joy to recall the many, often repeated, stories she told me of her life over the period when I knew her from 1944 to 1976. She was renowned in the family for her character, extravagance, and generosity. These stories were of course principally the verbal CV she had rehearsed over many years for interviews which she experienced as she worked her way through the kitchens of the aristocracy during the declining years of household service in the late 19th and early half of the 20th centuries. The only time in her life about which she was reticent was the time between1893 and 1910 when she worked at 4 Carlton House Terrace the London home of Prince George and Princess Mary later King George V and Queen Mary. This largely forgotten about London home was of course only used when their Royal Highnesses were in London on official business. They much preferred their cottage on the Sandringham Estate where the children were based. Her only references to this period were recalling Queen Victoria passing in her open carriage in the Mall below holding a white parasol on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Her rising from kitchen maid to cook, her training at the nearby Ritz Carlton under the famous Chef, Escoffier, where he followed her into the walk-in refrigerator and she slapped him around the face! Her sole other reference was preparing Queen Mary's supper tray. Though she did not reveal she must have performed this task on many occasions as she rose in the household to head kitchen maid. In 1907 she cooked her first dinner for the household, the menu of which she kept as a memento. This reticence was obviously the result of the confidentiality to which she had been sworn at the beginning of her career and explained her disgust in the 1960's when Crawfie wrote her infamous book on the early lives of the two Princesses. During the 1920's she started to rent a small London flat to use as a base. This was initially in Gatliffe buildings opposite the Chelsea Pensioners home for old soldiers, she later was moved by the London County Council to Churchill Gardens before coming to live with my family. I have included a chapter on local history at the end since this is where the story began apart from the Welsh prelude.

The key aim of this volume is to demonstrate ways in which an understanding of history can be used to inform present-day transport and mobility policies. This is not to say that history repeats itself, or that every contemporary transport dilemma has an historical counterpart: rather, the contributors to this book argue that in many contexts of transport planning a better understanding of the context and consequences of past decisions and processes could lead to more effective policy decisions. Collectively the authors explore the ways in which the methods and approaches of historical research may be applied to contemporary transport and policy issues across a wide range of transport modes and contexts. In this book we offer an exciting new perspective on a distinctive form of megalithic monument that is found across most areas of northern Europe. In order to achieve this we have abandoned outmoded typological classifications and reintroduced the term ‘dolmen’ to embrace a range of sites that share a common form of megalithic architecture: the elevation and display of a substantial stone. By critically assessing the traditionally assigned role of these monuments and their architecture as megalithic tombs, the presence of the dead is reassessed and argued to form part of a process generating vibrancy to the materiality of the dolmen. As such this book argues that the megalithic architecture identified as a dolmen is not a chambered tomb at all but instead is a qualitatively different form of monument. We also provide an entirely different conception of the utility of this extraordinary megalithic architecture – one that seeks to emphasize its building as articulating discourses of wonder as a broad social strategy. In this respect it is important to remember that many of these monuments were erected very early in the Neolithic and as a consequence of new people entering new lands, or social transformation. In short, dolmens are monumental constructions employing experimental and emergent technologies to raise huge stones, which, once built, enchant those who come within their spaces. Our claim is that dolmens were megalithic installations of affect, magical and extraordinary in construction and strategically positioned to induce both drama and awe in their encounter.

This is the first detailed study of anti-semitism, as an ideology, among the British. First published in 1979, it concentrates on the crucial period between 1876 and 1939 when, against a background of Jewish immigration, war or the threat of war, and social and economic unrest, hostility towards the Jewish community reached its peak. Colin Holmes identifies the main strands of anti-semitic thought and their expression, starting with the Eastern Crisis of 1876 which sparked off the first serious manifestation of anti-semitism. He shows how, before 1914, opposition towards Jews rested on religious and other perceived cultural distinctions. It was only after the First World War that a sinister and significant change of emphasis occurred: racism now became the dominant feature of anti-semitism and was reinforced by theories of conspiracy, the most notorious being The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Anti-semitism has no uniform cause or characteristic and a single explanation cannot suffice. This book elucidates the complex range of factors involved, using both historical and sociological methods and drawing on extensive (and sometimes controversial) research.

A nostalgic look back.” —Helicopter International The Supermarine Southampton was the first flying boat to be designed for the RAF after the First World War. Produced between 1924 and 1934, it entered into RAF service in 1925 and became the second longest serving (behind the Short Sunderland) and one of the most successful of the inter-war flying boats. In an unusual move for the times, the Air Ministry ordered six Southamptons straight from the drawing board as the design had been based on the success of the experimental Supermarine Swan amphibious aircraft. So successful was the aircraft that a further twelve were ordered in July 1925. The Southampton was a hugely successful aircraft for the RAF, the aircraft’s main sponsor, and was used for reconnaissance duties and as a patrol aircraft. It became best known for a series of publicly lauded long-distance flights, the intention of which was partly “flag waving” and partly for gaining valuable experience of flying boats in remote waters. The 1927 Far East Flight became known for the Southampton’s display of its prodigious range and reliability. The Southampton was a very profitable series of flying boats with sales also being made to Argentina, Turkey and Japan almost doubling Supermarine’s business in just a few years. A total of eighty-three of all types were built, all of which are revealed in this unrivaled collection of archive images, the majority of which, having been drawn from private collections, have not been published before.
