Hima-Sumac es la obra de teatro que Matto escribió basada en el cuento "El tesoro de los incas" de su amiga, la escritora argentina Juana Gorriti. La pieza es, en efecto, una apuesta por la valorización del legado incaico en el Perú, contada a partir de un triángulo amoroso y de acontecimientos que lo rebasan. En un plano técnico la obra mezcla influencias de los dramas rituales en quechua y de la ópera italiana. Fue estrenada en medio de la convulsión posterior a la Guerra del Pacífico, por lo que en ese momento hizo resonar una fibra patriótica. Pero quizás el mayor logro sea la construcción de una heroína indígena, compañera mítica del legendario Túpac-Amaru en la resistencia a los españoles y protagonista principal. Clorinda Matto de Turner (Cusco, 1852 - Buenos Aires, 1909) fue una escritora y periodista peruana, pionera de la novela indigenista en el continente. Dedicó numerosos artículos a promover la emancipación de las mujeres y reformas contra distintos tipos de explotación. Fundó y co-fundó varias publicaciones culturales, así como el proyecto editorial La Equitativa. Entre sus libros se destacan las novelas Aves sin nido (1889), Índole (1891) y Herencia (1895), a la par de contundentes ensayos, recopilaciones de notas periodísticas, conferencias, apuntes de viajes y una obra de teatro.
