Security Science integrates the multi-disciplined practice areas of security into a single structured body of knowledge, where each chapter takes an evidence-based approach to one of the core knowledge categories. The authors give practitioners and students the underlying scientific perspective based on robust underlying theories, principles, models or frameworks. Demonstrating the relationships and underlying concepts, they present an approach to each core security function within the context of both organizational security and homeland security. The book is unique in its application of the scientific method to the increasingly challenging tasks of preventing crime and foiling terrorist attacks. Incorporating the latest security theories and principles, it considers security from both a national and corporate perspective, applied at a strategic and tactical level. It provides a rational basis for complex decisions and begins the process of defining the emerging discipline of security science. A fresh and provocative approach to the key facets of security Presentation of theories and models for a reasoned approach to decision making Strategic and tactical support for corporate leaders handling security challenges Methodologies for protecting national assets in government and private sectors Exploration of security’s emerging body of knowledge across domains
More than any other male movie star, the refined Clifton Webb (1889-1966) caused the moviegoing public to change its image of a leading man. In a day when leading men were supposed to be strong, virile, and brave, Clifton Webb projected an image of flip, acerbic arrogance. He was able to play everything from a decadent columnist (Laura) to a fertile father (Cheaper by the Dozen and The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker), delivering lines in an urbanely clipped, acidly dry manner with impeccable timing. Long before his film career began, Webb was a child actor and later a suavely effete song-and-dance man in numerous Broadway musicals and revues. The turning point in his career came in 1941 when his good friend Noël Coward cast him in Blithe Spirit. Director Otto Preminger saw Webb's performance and cast him in Laura in 1944. Webb began to write his autobiography, but he said that he eventually had gotten “bogged down” in the process. However, he did complete six chapters and left a hefty collection of notes that he intended to use in the proposed book. His writing is as witty and sophisticated as his onscreen persona. Those six chapters, information and voluminous notes, and personal research by coauthor David L. Smith provide an intimate view of an amazingly talented man's life and times.
In November 1950, United Nations forces in Korea narrowly escaped being overrun by Chinese Communist forces, due to the military expertise of General Oliver Prince Smith. Using the general's own notes and diaries, this book describes Smith's long and distinguished career, his command in Iceland in 1940, in the Pacific campaigns, and in Korea. The general's wartime dealings witrh military and political leaders is also discussed, paying tribute to a man called the gentle warrior.
Break the cycle of tension and exhaustion in the workplace and learn how to have greater energy through correct breathing. Workers today are becoming more sedentary. We are thinking more and using our bodies less - we communicate all day with a computer screen, becoming so absorbed that our shoulders tense, our breathing changes, we hold our breath too much and, by the end of the day, we're exhausted. Extensive research has linked dysfunctional breathing patterns to problems such as occupational overuse and RSI. The main risks are: * asymmetry in body activity, eg use of mouse in one hand * use of upper shoulder muscles in typing and turning at the same time * breath holding or very shallow breathing during movements * lack of awareness of breath holding * lack of awareness of body bracing The exercises in this book will help you restore energy-efficient breathing and improve your energy levels, productivity and work pace. You will learn to run on natural not nervous energy, and your thought patterns will become calm but alert. You will reduce your stress levels naturally and without drugs. The book includes a number of crucial exercises specifically for high computer users, and more general exercises for all sedentary workers. Then there are exercises to energise you and to reduce anxiety before presentations, meetings and job interviews. Authors Dinah Bradley and Tania Clifton-Smith — the 'queens of calm '— are world experts on breathing pattern disorders. As practising physiotherapists they have an in-depth understanding of the physiological and musculoskeletal problems caused by poor breathing.
A revolutionary book from top Ear, Nose & Throat surgeon, Dr Jim Bartley, and highly-regarded breathing expert,Tania Clifton-Smith, who believe that good breathing patterns can dramatically improve the lives of people with major diseases such as heart disease, asthma and depression. Breathing well helps us relax, normalises body biochemistry, reduces muscle pain and allows the re-establishment of normal posture and movement. Part I discusses the role of smell and the "nose brain" in our everyday lives. These chapters provide a physiological, scientific basis to the book. Part II discusses basic breathing techniques, posture, self-massage and muscle stretching techniques. These are the self-help techniques that you can adopt to help yourself. Part III discusses common disease conditions that can be improved by attention to breathing techniques. These include asthma, heart disease, migraine, tension headache, jaw-joint pain, anxiety and depression.
Making the case for the relevance of pastoral care today, this book explores the role of pastoral care through the prism of music. Using musical analogies, the author provides a new way of understanding and practising pastoral care, grounded in practical theology. Challenging overemphasis on mission, he shows that pastoral care remains essential to the life of the church, especially when engaging with extreme situations such as dying, suffering or war, and considers the role of pastoral carers in the specific pastoral encounter and in the life of the church in general.
