This third volume in the ten-volume series covers the career of Henry Clay from the Second Session of the Sixteenth Congress, where he engineered the second Missouri Compromise, to the presidential election of 1824, when he found himself eliminated as a candidate. Upon his return from Congress in 1821, Clay practiced law and interested himself in Transylvania University, among other things. Elected again to the House of Representatives and to the Speakership in the Eighteenth Congress, Clay resumed his leadership in national affairs; his concerns at this period were principally with the Monroe Doctrine, the Spanish and Greek revolutions, and internal improvements and the tariff. A continuing thread in the volume is the presidential campaign of 1824. Clay's correspondence illustrates the changes in political techniques brought about by the emergence of the Jacksonian type of campaign. Sectionalism, already revealed as a danger to the Union, continued as an important issue. Clay's optimistic anticipation of his election of course proved incorrect, and the volume ends with Clay in the powerful but uncomfortable position of being able, by throwing his support to one of three candidates before the House of Representatives, to choose the next President of the United States. Publication of this book was assisted by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

How they were changed ultimately became his legacy. In the Marines he found that his capacity for violence ran deep; in his unhappy marriages he found himself repeating old mistakes. Over the years he began to recognize that the terrible wounds on both sides of his family formed patterns of scapegoats and rebels, of betrayal and grief, and finally of yearning and hope. In this knowledge he found freedom. Battlegrounds of Memory is a work of deep courage--at times humorous and ironic, at other times melancholy and lyrical, it is told with an amazing sensitivity and passion. It is a strong testament to the force of love.

Trophemus knew that his intuition would never tell him to do evil, and as long as he was directed to do good, he should listen. And listen he would! Trophemus did have much difficulty making sense of and discerning God's requirement to keep his secret place hidden from all. But time does have a way to envelop all our misunderstanding concerning God's direction in every decision we make. Mystery always surrounds us as we live a righteous, high-integrity human life. He knew well integrity is living the highest moral standard in our daily human life, whether anyone sees us or not, even when we are all alone. This kind of righteous daily living brings peace into one's heart. Peace has a source, and Trophemus was a man on earth full of peace and goodwill to all those in Tatonka who live righteous lives. But not all will live righteous lives as Trophemus gradually learns Schrum is a young man who personifies and emanates evil. Thus his two lives providentially whirl around this antagonistic creature on earth named Schrum. As the race begins in the first chapter by which a fourteen-year-old boy becomes a man, Trophemus has the highest expectations, and all is peaceful in the safe and secure country of Tatonka. Will this man-boy's becoming a man fulfill what destiny has been immaculately arranged upon him? Trophemus!
