The Court’s jurisprudence ensures that victims of human rights violations are awarded not only monetary compensation in cases, but also a full array of reparations designed to restore their dignity and reaffirm the value of the rule of law. Accordingly, reparation also includes moral compensation, guarantees of non repetition, and truth as a measure of satisfaction. More specifically, the book explores the notions of “fair remedy,” “injured party,” and the possibility of achieving “restitutio in integrum” for human rights violations through an analysis of decisions issued by the Inter-American Court. The book urges its reader to consider not only the current status of the law, but also the role played by victims, lawyers, Commissioners, and Judges in its jurisprudential development. As a living instrument, the value of the American Convention depends in great part on their actions and decisions. The American Martyrologyhelps the faithful recall the heroic lives and deaths of dozens of men and women of God with strong connections to the United States. These local records were eventually combined to form general martyrologies—the most famous of which, the Roman Martyrology, is used to this day as an official liturgical book. But the need for local lists never quite faded, and Father Frederick George Holweck (1856-1927), one of America's foremost church historians and hagiographers, was the first to publish such a calendar for the United States over 90 years ago. The new 2015 edition of The American Martyrology features all the Saints, Blesseds, Venerables, Servants of God, and reputed martyrs honored in the U.S. throughout the year. It dramatically expands Holweck's compilation with the dozens of new saints and causes added since then, including not only feasts of the national calendar but also those of the traditional Roman calendar such as St. Valentine and St. Christopher and those of the Ordinariate calendar such as St. Alban, St. Columba, and the English martyrs. Lines of Thought: Rethinking Philosophical Assumptions is a highly innovative and powerfully argued book. According to the author, noted Brazilian philosopher Claudio Costa, many philosophical ideas that today are widely seen as old-fashioned and outdated should not be dismissed, but instead should be extensively reworked and reformulated. This also means that contemporary analytical philosophy should begin to question many of its most cherished views and reconsider some of the current ways of looking at philosophy. Following this path, in the philosophy of language, the author suggests replacing the causal-historical view of proper names with a much more sophisticated form of descriptive-internalist theory able to meet Kripke’s challenges. In epistemology, he argues convincingly that we should return to the old traditional tripartite definition of knowledge, reformulated in a much more complex form in which Gettier’s problem would disappear. The correct response to skepticism about the external world should not be to adopt new and more fanciful views, but rather to carefully analyze the different kinds of reality attributions implied by the argument and responsible for its equivocal character. In metaphysics, he argues for a more complex reformulation of the traditional compatibilist approach of free will, relating it intrinsically with the causal theory of action and making it powerful enough to assimilate the best elements of hierarchical views. Finally, according to the author, contemporary analytic philosophy suffers from a lack of comprehensiveness. In response to this, the papers in this collection aim to restore something of a broader perspective, salvaging isolated insights by integrating them into more comprehensive views.
