Modern birds (Neornithes) are represented by two big lineages, the Palaeognathae (Tinamiformes + Ratitae) and the Neognathae [Galloanserae + Neoaves (Metaves + Coronoaves)]. Both clades sum approximately 10,000 species of which 60% are Passeriformes (the most diverse clade of terrestrial vertebrates). A comparison between the past and the present reveals a complex and hallmarked evolutionary and biogeographic history which would have begun over 65 million years ago. For South America (SA) this includes: (1) the presence of taxa with uncertain affinities and the absence of Passeriformes during the Paleogene; (2) a progressive and accelerated increase of the species starting at the Neogene (Miocene); (3) important extinct lineages (e.g. Phorusrhacidae, Teratornithidae) that migrate to North America after the rising of the Panamá isthmus; (4) groups with major diversification in the Neogene that survives nowadays represented by scarce species endemic of SA (Cariamidae) or that inhabits mainly in the southern hemisphere (Anhingidae); (5) very diverse living groups with scarce (e.g., Passeriformes) or none (e.g., Apodiformes) fossil record in SA, which stem-groups are registered in Europe. Apparently, the changes in diversity of the south American Neornithes have been the result of successive radiation, biogeographic connections with North America and in a minor scale, some extinctions. The opening of the Drake ́s passage and the occurrence of the circumpolar Antarctic flow are not sufficient causes to explain the highly disparity between the weddelians penguins (Sphenisciformes) of Antartica and those of the patagonian Atlantic Ocean.

Drohnen sind unbemannte Flugobjekte, deren Größen so unterschiedlich sind wie ihr Aussehen und ihre Nutzung. Eingesetzt werden sie für unterschiedlichste zivile Zwecke: u.a. um schwer zugängliche Gebiete zu erreichen, zur Kontrolle von Grenzen, Überwachung, Datensammlung sowie in der Landwirtschaft und im Dienstleistungssektor. Sie liefern Künstler*innen, Fotograf*innen und Filmemacher*innen eindrucksvolle Aufnahmen und haben die Bildästhetik der Gegenwart revolutioniert. Drohnen gelten aber auch als die wichtigste Kriegstechnologie seit der Erfindung der Atombombe. Gegenwärtig sind Drohnen noch keine autonom operierenden Systeme, in Kombination mit Künstlicher Intelligenz können sie aber zu unheimlichen Waffen werden. Dieser Ausbau zu lernenden und autonom agierenden Maschinen wirft auch ethische Fragen auf. Die Publikation führt die Inhalte der Ausstellung Game of Drones. Von unbemannten Flugobjekten und einer Fachtagung im Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen zusammen, die verschiedene Aspekte historischer, aktueller und zukünftiger Drohnentechnologien in vertiefter Form analysieren. Verhandelt wurden gesellschaftlich relevante Fragestellungen anhand technikhistorischer Exponate und ausgewählter Werke internationaler Künstler*innen, die Drohnentechnologien auf unterschiedlichste Weise kritisch reflektieren. Heutige Drohnen sind Weiterentwicklungen von unbemannten Ballonen, Fernlenkwaffen und Modellflugzeugen. Ausgehend von dieser historischen Verortung beschäftigt sich die Publikation mit dem Einsatz von Drohnen und ihrer hybriden Funktion als Spielzeug, Kriegstechnologie und Wirtschaftsfaktor. Als eine Technologie, die absolute Gegensätze vereint, wird deren Widersprüchlichkeit in all ihren Facetten aufgezeigt: vom Überwachungsapparat zum Instrument des Widerstands und Protests, vom animistisch beseelten Objekt bis hin zum Einsatz in der strategischen Kriegsführung. Reflektiert werden dabei auch zukünftige Entwicklungen, wie Fragen zu transhumanem Bewusstsein und Künstlicher Intelligenz.

This book provides a careful historical analysis of the co-evolution of educational attainment and the wage structure in the United States through the twentieth century. The authors propose that the twentieth century was not only the American Century but also the Human Capital Century. That is, the American educational system is what made America the richest nation in the world. Its educational system had always been less elite than that of most European nations. By 1900 the U.S. had begun to educate its masses at the secondary level, not just in the primary schools that had remarkable success in the nineteenth century. The book argues that technological change, education, and inequality have been involved in a kind of race. During the first eight decades of the twentieth century, the increase of educated workers was higher than the demand for them. This had the effect of boosting income for most people and lowering inequality. However, the reverse has been true since about 1980. This educational slowdown was accompanied by rising inequality. The authors discuss the complex reasons for this, and what might be done to ameliorate it.

This volume deals with binary nitrogen-hydrogen compounds having two, three, or more nitrogen atoms (with the exception of hydrazine) and with compounds composed of nitrogen, hydrogen, and noble gases. The important species containing two nitrogen atoms, N2H, N2H+, N2H2, and N2H3 are described in the first part of this volume. Next, chains and cycles consisting of three nitrogen atoms are covered. Among them hydrogen azide or hydrozoic acid, HN3, is the most extensively studied nitrogen-hydrogen compound described in this volume. With increasing number of nitrogen atoms, the thermochmical stability declines. There is, however, a considerable amount of information on molecules with up to nine linked nitrogen atoms. Several of these binary nitrogen-hydrogen compounds could only be isolated in the form of organic derivatives. In that case, data available for the organic derivatives were included if they were characteristic for the particular unsubstituted N-H parent compound.

The topic of this book fits in with the recently growing interest in phraseology and fixedness in English. It offers a description of multi-word verbs in the language of the 17th and 18th centuries, an important formative period for Modern English. For the first time, multi-word verbs are treated together as a group, as it is argued that phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs, phrasal-prepositional verbs, verb-adjective combinations and verbo-nominal combinations share defining characteristics. These characteristics are also reflected in similar possibilities of usage, in particular the subtle modification of verbal meaning and these verbs' potential for topicalization structures, both leading to a greater expressiveness. Using a new text collection, the Lampeter Corpus of Early Modern English Tracts (1640-1740), the study provides a description of the multi-word verb types found, their syntactic behaviour, and their semantic structure. The composition of the corpus also allowed the examination of the development of these verbs over time and in different registers. The corpus study is supplemented by an investigation of attitudes towards multi-word verbs with the help of contemporary works on language, leading to a more speculative discussion of the factors influencing the choice between multi-word and simplex verbs.

NH and NH1 are not treated. The predominant part 3 of the volume covers the description of the molecules NH and NH . 8oth species are present 2 in photolytic processes in the atmosphere. They play an essential role in combustion systems regardless of whether the nitrogen stems from the nitrogen-containing fuel or from the air. Thus, much work has been devoted to the understanding of the nitrogen chemistry in combustion and in the atmosphere. The production and detection methods as weiL as the reactions have been comprehensively described. ln addition detailed information is given on the spectral behavior, the knowledge of which is important for detecting the mole cules and for studying their kinetics.
