Have you ever had a brush with death? There exists in this world a balance between life and death which must constantly be maintained. This scale is extremely sensitive; if tipped even by a little, the world falls into chaos. Of course, this balance doesn't tip on its own. There are champions of death, cruel and ruthless people who believe this world is theirs for the taking. But good has its champions too. That's where my team comes in: were here to protect and defend life. If you live in New York City, youve probably seen one of us without knowing it; me, Jiff, Ryde, Luz, Tami, Taxi, and Gray are in charge of keeping Manhattan in order. Our job isn't easy, but we were made for it. You see, while alive, we survived a series of tests called "brushes" with death exceptionally wellso, when we died, we were given another life, as well as a few other gifts. Super-strength. Speed. Invincibility. Senses unlike any other. And my favorite part: wings. We became part of an extraordinary team built to fight against evila job which has recently become a lot tougher. They call us the Brushers.
Through the results of a developed case study of information system for low temperature geothermal energy, GIS to Support Cost-effective Decisions on Renewable Sources addresses the issue of the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in evaluating cost-effectiveness of renewable resource exploitation on a regional scale. Focusing on the design of a Decision Support System, a process is presented aimed to transform geographic data into knowledge useful for analysis and decision-making on the economic exploitation of geothermal energy. This detailed description includes a literature review and technical issues related to data collection, data mining, decision analysis for the informative system developed for the case study. A multi-disciplinary approach to GIS design is presented which is also an innovative example of fusion of georeferenced data acquired from multiple sources including remote sensing, networks of sensors and socio-economic censuses. GIS to Support Cost-effective Decisions on Renewable Sources is a useful, practical reference for engineers, managers and researchers involved in the design of GIS, decision support systems, investment planning/strategy in renewable energy and ICT innovation in this field.
Innovative research solutions increasingly require deep engagement with practitioners to manage the complex problems they are attempting to solve. This often project-based research is equipped with finite resources over a limited period without much thought into future-proofing the practice. These projects must face questions of what happens when a product comes to an end and whether there are any lasting positive effects once the IT systems are no longer being actively developed. From a computing perspective, the challenge is to design IT artifacts that contribute to improving the user's work and everyday life in a sustainable way, thereby also contributing to social and ecological sustainability. Future-Proofing: Making Practice-Based IT Design Sustainable documents the experiences made by several leading research groups in Europe, North America, and South Africa. It describes their efforts to achieve sustainable design results, the difficulties that barred the way but also the strategies they adopted to achieve the goal of sustainability. The analysis of these cases has inspired thinking about how to more systematically address and possibly overcome the impediments to sustainability. This book develops a strong future-oriented perspective that conceptualizes sustainability as a complex and highly variegated issue and formulates insights and recommendations with a view to help researchers to better design for sustainability.
