A Condition of Complete Simplicity offers a practical exploration of three essential keynotes of Francisc an spirituality - humility, love and joy - as they can be lived out in a world that is often characterised by violence, greed and religious conflict. This is our world, and it was also Francis' world - a furnace for forging the radical values of those who cast off possessions, status, security and everything that stood in their way of following Christ. Franciscan wisdom, with its emphasis on the upside-down values of the kingdom of God, has an urgent relevance for many of the problems we encounter today. Francis' turning away from his youthful ambitions inspires us to do battle with our false priorities and find our true vocation. His acknowledging of all creatures as his brothers and sisters challenges us to recognize the image of the Creator in every individual. His infectious love for all creation gives us cause for hope and rejoicing as we learn to find and reflect Christ's presence throughout his world.
Politics, Personalities, and Persistence tells the story of the evolution of registered psychiatric nursing in the province of Manitoba. This comprehensive account traces the distinct profession’s transition from the asylums of Manitoba, where for seventy years psychiatric nurses had cared for the mentally ill when few others were interested in them, to the halls of academia in Brandon University in 1986, the first university in Canada to grant a baccalaureate degree to psychiatric nurses. This specialty began in the asylums and took further shape in this small prairie university on the banks of the Assiniboine River courtesy of the energy and vision of many dedicated individuals who believed in the legitimate place of psychiatric nursing in the health-care field and pushed hard for its recognition. What makes this story unique is that the emergence of psychiatric nursing in Manitoba—and indeed in Western Canada—countered the established practice of the general nursing regulatory bodies, who viewed psychiatric nursing as a specialty to be pursued at the graduate level. At times this created tension between the two groups. Politics, Personalities, and Persistence draws on documentary records from Manitoba archives, as well as the personal recollections and colourful reminiscences of key players. It explores the legal recognition of psychiatric nursing, challenges to its place in the nursing community, and the role of government policies in the development of the profession.
This book critically examines the concept of “embeddedness”: the core concept of an economic sociology of law (ESL). It suggests that our ways of doing, talking, and thinking about law, economy, and society, reproduce and re-entrench mainstream approaches, shaping our thoughts and actions such that we perform according to the model. Taking a deep dive into one example – the concept of embeddedness – this book combines insights from law, sociology, economics, and psychology to show that while we use metaphor to talk about law and economy, our metaphors in turn use us, moulding us into their fictionalized caricatures of homo juridicus and homo economicus. The result is a groundbreaking study into the prioritization throughout society of interests and voices that align with doctrinal understandings of law and neoclassical understandings of economics: approaches that led us into the dilemmas currently facing society. Zooming out from a detailed exploration of embeddedness in economic sociology and ESL literature, the book unpacks the fashionable post-2008 claim that the economy should be re-embedded in society and proposes two conceptual shifts in response. The book draws on personas and vignettes throughout, both to imagine and to realize shifting an ESL beyond embeddedness. This timely engagement with the emerging field of economic sociology of law will appeal to socio-legal scholars and others with interests in the intersection of law, economics, and sociology. This title was first published in 2003: Although young people are generally very healthy, it has become clear that many of the health behaviours of young people can have serious consequences later in life. This is particularly so with the management of chronic illness, where poor management can result in serious long-term complications. This book explores how gender differentially affects both the ways in which young people manage chronic illness and the ways in which mothers care for their teenage sons and daughters. Until recently, where gender and health have been linked, the focus has typically been on women rather than men. However, there is growing interest in the health of men, with the recognition that masculinities and health interact in specific, sometimes detrimental ways. Most books examine either women’s, or less commonly, men’s health, but the comparative approach proposed reflects a growing academic and empirical trend which aims to develop new theoretical perspectives both on gender and on the relationship between gender and health. The book also challenges assumptions that gender is static, by exploring the effects of gender at a specific time of transition in the life course. The focus on adolescence is important, as it is seen by many to be the time when heterosexual values are most powerfully pursued and enforced, thus enabling interactions between gender and health to be thrown into relief. The approach adopted takes issue with many current ideas about young people, which tend to portray them as autonomous individuals, acting independently. For example, in terms of health care for young people with a chronic illness, health professionals generally adopt an individualistic approach, stressing the importance of independence for young people. Rather than seeing young people as purely autonomous, this book relocates them within families, in transition between childhood and adulthood and acting interdependently with other family members. Little is known about the complex deci

This book examines and analyses the connections between gastronomy, tourism and the media. It argues that in the modern world, gastronomy is increasingly a major component and driver of tourism and that destinations are using their cuisines and food cultures in marketing to increase their competitive advantage. It proposes that these processes are interconnected with film, television, print and social media. The book emphasises the notion of gastronomy as a dynamic concept, in particular how it has recently become more widely used and understood throughout the world. The volume introduces core concepts and delves more deeply into current trends in gastronomy, the forces which shape them and their implications for tourism. The book is multidisciplinary and will appeal to researchers in the fields of gastronomy, hospitality, tourism and media studies.
