Warning: this is not a religious book! Shamrocks in the Heather is the fifth book in the Brothers Series and the first in the Shamrocks Saga. It continues the story of the on-going battle between Michael the Archangel and his brother Lucifer by going back in time to trace the history of Theodora and Theodosia Quigley, the mysterious twins mentioned in the previous books. The story begins with the twins grandparents, Rory and Mary Ann Quigley and their beginnings in Ireland. Forced by circumstances to move to Scotland, they set about creating a new life for themselves and their growing family. Their oldest child, Conor, begins the family tradition of seeing and forming a close association with his Guardian Angel. These associations deepens quickly into warm and unique friendships and, time and time again, will prove to be critical. They same friendships also make the family the subject of much curiosity. The birth of the other Quigley children: Erin, Ethna, Angus and Martin, leads deeper and deeper into the story. World War I and the terrible flu pandemic that followed subjected the family to tragedy and heartbreak. Their mettle is tested again and again as time goes on. Perhaps its this testing that helps form the steel backbones of Theodora and Theodosia who will not be born until Martin moves to London and begins his career as a journalist. Ahead many joys, tragedies and surprises await the Quigleys and time alone will tell if theyre up to the challenge.. Under the Southern Cross, the eighth book in the Brothers Series and the fourth in the Shamrocks Saga, continues the story begun in Shamrocks in the Heather with the adventures of the rapidly maturing younger members of the Quigley clan. World War II is now in full swing and the Quigley cousins (by whatever name they're known) volunteer for duty in the armed forces: Andrew, Finn and Doug in the RAF, Dennis in the Royal Navy and Geordie in the Army. Roarke, trapped in Australia by the outbreak of war, joins the coastwatchers in the Solomon Islands. This job, vital to the war effort and extremely dangerous, keep Martin, Anne and the twins on tenterhooks. Whether due to old age or the toll taken by the stress of war, the family suffers many deaths. The younger generation suffers greatly as well as they perform their various stints in the military. In the meantime, the demon inhabiting the soul of Adolph Hitler is beginning to believe the Nazis are no longer going to win the war. He takes desperate and sometimes foolish measures to try to rectify the deteriorating situation. Lucifer, ever practical, decides to hedge his bet by looking at Stalin as a new would-be ally in his war to establish the Rule of Chaos. The Spear of Destiny will play a role in the outcome of the war and many forces are determined to gain control of the mystical weapon. What no one counts on is the interference of the Quigley twins. Dora and Dosia are set on reclaiming the Spear for its original owner. While a vicious war turns London into matchsticks and mainland Europe into hell-on-earth, a semi-normal life goes on. People, Quigleys included, marry and have children. Their traveling is curtailed by shortages of fuel; their gatherings are more subdued with less food and fewer gifts but a semblance of normalcy is stubbornly adhered to. So, the battle between good and evil goes on. On one side is the Prince of Hell and his faithful (?) Lieutenant Beelzebub. Or is he faithful? He's beginning to develop a reluctant admiration for the twins and even begins to like them. On the other side are the Quigleys, their Angels and the two wild-cards: Dora and Dosia. What happens to the Spear will have great bearing on the future of mankind although no one really realizes that and the twins want to keep it that way. They know this is not the last time they'll have to face and fight Lucifer and his minions but they take one day at a time, one challenge at a time while whispering the "Quigley lullaby" "Whisht now, whisht." The story begins as Martin arrives in London to begin his new job as a reporter on the London Post Express. Although disappointed in the size of the publication, Martin meets the love of his life. Anne Bentleigh-Woolcott is an aristocrat with definite democratic leanings and Martin's attraction to her proves mutual. The book follows their life as they marry and become "spies" for a secret government organization. In Europe, the mysterious relic known as the Spear of Destiny suddenly looms large in not only their future but the future of the world. The couple encounters leaders of the nascent Nazi party along with their demonic assistants as they struggle to reach the Spear and learn why it should play such an important part in their own lives and that of the entire world. During their sojourn, they encounter many dangers and, with the help of their hard-working Guardian Angels, manage to overcome them. Once returned to England, the couple settle into married life. They buy their first home little knowing it, too, holds secrets important to them. In Castlemere, they learn of previously unknown relations in Australia and are reunited with this branch of the family. Soon, their son, Roarke, is born and Martin agrees to return to Germany to assess the growing power of the Nazi party. There, he is dismayed to see signs of the impending war becoming clearer by the day. He returns to his family depressed and frustrated at his inability to head off the upcoming disaster. Anne learns she is expecting twins and, to Martin's horror, becomes a target of diabolical forces wishing to destroy the unborn babies. A resourceful Roarke--now four-years-old--shows his courage and inventiveness by diverting an attack and routing her assailant. At the end of the story Anne gives birth to twins--two girls who are destined to give Lucifer a run for his money--the irrepressible Theodora and Theodosia Quigley. World War II is now virtually over and the Quigley cousins (by whatever name they're known) are struggling to cope with the idea that they have, indeed, survived. One by one and each in his own way they begin to adapt to civilian life. As always, unexpected coincidences seem to dictate their fate. After all the losses the family suffered during the war, it's a relief for them to be able to plan weddings and births instead of funerals. Mapping out their futures is a novel not to mention challenging job. Men who'd been warriors now tried to force themselves into new roles as husbands and, eventually, fathers. Roarke and his pregnant wife, Mary Glare, arrive home in England to a tumultuous reception. Little did any of them know that Lucifer, unable to learn more about Dora and Dosia, plans to attack the pregnant women in the family in hopes of learning the secret of the twins' origin. Since the entire family is now in on the "secret" the threat is real. A stranger arrives at Tim's estate during one of the Quigley gatherings and warns of a demon attack. His name is André Giroux and he's an old friend of Ronnie's, a fact that arouses alarm in Ronnie's fiancé, Doug MacKinnon. The attack materializes and Za'aphi'el is forced to deal with it although the Guardian Angels do their part as well. Other arrivals at the gathering are more welcome than the demons. Bart and Bert Kennison, finally returned from the European Theater, surprise Dora and Dosia. The two sets of twins make plans to marry and move to the United States. This decision was partially dictated by the Old Man who has plans for the twins interference in more of his infernal son's machinations. Little do either of the couples know that, in moving to New York, they'll do battle with the Mob as well as diabolical forces. Still, those who know the twins, won't be surprised who wins. A pleasant surprise awaits the twin couples when they discover old and new relatives in an unexpected place. This discovery will cause widespread ramifications. There's also a new wrinkle in the battle with the netherworld as the pregnant members of the family find themselves targets of demons hoping to engratiate themselves to their boss by kidnapping a Quigley child. Each of the women is tested in a different way with sometimes unexpected results. As usual, births, deaths and completely unbelievable events test the family's resolve and courage again and again. Birth is something the Archangel Za'aphi'el never imagined having to cope with. To his secret chagrin, the twins find themselves looking forward to motherhood and all that entails. What kind of mothers will the alter-egos of a high-ranking Archangel make? Their mysterious friend Andr Giroux returns and plays an important part in their ongoing story. Speculation about him continues but those in the know refuse to divulge his secret. Who is he and what effect will he have on the family? Another surprising development is the growing friendship between the twins and their supposed enemy, Beelzebub. The little demon has grown quite attached to the whole family, not to mention his growing bond with the indominable Glory. How will this change affect the outcome of the battle with Lucifer? On August 19, 1958, Clara Luper and thirteen Black youth walked into Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City and sat down at the lunch counter. When they tried to order, they were denied service. As they sat in silence, refusing to leave, the surrounding white customers unleashed a torrent of threats and racial slurs. This first organized sit-in in Oklahoma—almost two years before the more famous sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina—sparked other demonstrations in Oklahoma and other states. Behold the Walls is Luper’s engrossing firsthand account of how the movement she helped launch ended legal racial segregation. First published in 1979, Behold the Walls now features a new introduction and 33 newly selected historical photos. Luper’s direct, unvarnished account captures the immediacy of the events she witnessed. As a Black woman, Luper refused to let either racism or sexism deter her from stepping forth as a leader. Born in 1923, Clara Luper taught history in Oklahoma public schools and led the NAACP Youth Council. The students who sat in at Katz Drug and other businesses belonged to that organization. Luper highlights the contributions of others, especially young people, in breaking down the walls of segregation in Oklahoma through numerous demonstrations, marches, and voter registration campaigns. This commemorative edition of Luper’s eye-opening autobiography, published near what would have been her 100th birthday, as well as the 65th anniversary of the sit-ins, offers invaluable insight into the history of protest in the early years of the civil rights movement. As they grow, it seems the tension and war-clouds in Europe grow with them. Once again, the family is summoned to aid the mysterious group known as RISK in assessing the situation in Germany. And, once again, they are threatened with diabolical enemies as well as the rapidly expanding Nazi party. Now that Martins link to the Spear of Destiny has been revealed, Lucifer must do everything he can to keep him away from the powerful artifact. The Prince of Hell looks forward to the day that Adolph Hitler will use the Spear to initiate his greatest wish: The Rule of Chaos. He does manage to separate Martin and his closest ally, his son Roarke. But Lucifer fails to take into account the abilities of the twins. In spite of proof to the contrary, he continues to denigrate the worth of females and ignores the danger of the Quigleys Guardian Angels. Since Conor first discovered he had a Guardian Angel who was more than willing to talk to him, the Angels have played a growing part in the lives of all the Quigleys. With the war looming and the male members of the family approaching maturity, the Angels are soon to be overworked and tempted to disobey the rule that they must render no direct aid. Testimony until the end in a radical donation of life and blood can be communitarian and not only individual. That is the case for the two communities of Trappists and Jesuits, so different in their form and so close in their radicality. One is contemplative, the other active; one is in Africa, the other in Latin America. Both are religious Catholic orders. Nevertheless, the cause of their violent death is secular. For one, there is love and dialogue with otherness: other cultures, other religions, other beliefs. For the other, there is justice for those who are the victims of iniquitous economic and political systems: the poor. Assuming secular causes into their religious consecration and commitment, those communities teach today to the plural society we live in how to be open to otherness, to difference, and to the various vulnerabilities that clamor for justice. They also teach to the churches a new radical way to live the gospel—not with a unique institutional point of view but with an unlimited openness to all hungers and thirsts of the world. Their martyrdom is a liturgy celebrated publicly, instigating reflection and action.
