Modern Petrochemical Technology A text that explores the essence of petrochemicals and petrochemical technology Modern Petrochemical Technology: Methods, Manufacturing and Applications is a comprehensive resource that provides an overview of the uses for common petrochemical building blocks, a review of the marketplaces, and offers a survey of the technology used to make the key petrochemical building blocks. The book contains both critical information the technologies used to produce petrochemicals, how the various petrochemicals are applied in industry, and provides illustrative examples and problems designed to reinforce the learning about the basic science, engineering, and use of petrochemicals. The book explores three seprate petrochemical building block—olefin complexes, aromatic complexes and synthesis gas complexes—and examines the “interconnected” nature of these building blocks. The authors also include information on the olefins productions using steam cracking, paraffin dehydrogenation, and methanol to olefins technologies and describes various methods, commercial processes to produce aromatics such as benzene, toluene and xylene, and much more. This important book: Offers a guide to the critical information on petrochemical producing technologies Includes material on various petrochemicals from the industrial point-of-view Explores the separation processes, membrane technology, absorption technology, liquid-liquid extraction, and more Contains material from a team of noted experts Provides a survey of examples of commercialization applications of petrochemicals Written for chemical engineers, chemists in industry, membrane scientists, and process engineers, Modern Petrochemical Technology provides an overview of markets and uses for common petrochemical building blocks as well as includes a survey of the technology used to make the key petrochemical building blocks.
This book focuses on optical vortices, including beams carrying orbital angular momentum and vector beams. It presents an overview of, and the latest research on this novel type of optical beam, which is a hot topic in the domain of modern optics, especially in optical communication and beam manipulation. Summarizing the fundamentals of optical vortices, it discusses their characterization and propagation, and focuses on the generation of vortices such as vortex-arrays, and the detection of vortices and their orbital angular momentum state. It also comprehensively examines the adaptive compensation systems, as well as vector beams and polarization vortices with anisotropic polarization distributions. Further it provides a detailed description of perfect vortices with beam diameters independent of the angular momentum. This book is intended for researchers, engineers and graduate students working in the field of optics and laser beam applications.
The Ning-Meng reach of the Yellow River basin is located in the Inner Mongolia region at the Northern part of the Yellow River. Due to the special geographical conditions, the river flow direction is towards the North causing the Ning-Meng reach to freeze up every year in wintertime. Both during the freeze-up and break-up period, unfavourable conditions occur which may cause ice jamming and ice dam formation leading to dike breaching and overtopping of the embankment. Throughout history this has often led to considerable casualties and property loss. Enhanced economic development and human activities in the region have altered the characteristics of the ice regime in recent decades, leading to several ice disasters during freezing or breaking-up periods. The integrated water resources management plan developed by the Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) outlines the requirements for water regulation in the upper Yellow River during ice flood periods. YRCC is developing measures that not only safeguard against ice floods, but also assure the availability of adequate water resources. These provide the overall requirements for developing an ice regime forecasting system including lead-time prediction and required accuracy. In order to develop such a system, numerical modelling of ice floods is an essential component of current research at the YRCC, together with field observations and laboratory experiments. In order to properly model river ice processes it is necessary to adjust the hydrodynamic equations to account for thermodynamic effects. In this research, hydrological and meteorological data from 1950 to 2010 were used to analyse the characteristics of ice regimes in the past. Also, additional field observations were carried out for ice flood model calibration and validation. By combining meteorological forecasting models with statistical models, a medium to short range air temperature forecasting model for the Ning-Meng reach was established. These results were used to improve ice formation modelling and prolong lead-time prediction. The numerical ice flood model developed in this thesis for the Ning-Meng reach allows better forecasting of the ice regime and improved decision support for upstream reservoir regulation and taking appropriate measures for disaster risk reduction.
This Key Concept pivot explores the trajectory of the semantic generation and evolution of two core concepts of ancient Chinese Confucianism, ‘Zhong’ (middle) and ‘Zhongyong’ (golden mean). In the pre-Qin period, Confucius advocated ‘middle line’ and ‘golden mean’ as the highest standards for gentlemanly behaviour and culture. In The Doctrine of the Mean the Confucian classic of the late Warring States Period, ‘middle’ obtained the ontological meaning of ‘great fundamental virtues of the world’, due to the influence of Taoism and Yinyang School. It became not only the norm of human behaviours, but also the law governing the operation of heaven and earth. Since then, idealist Confucian scholars of the Song and Ming dynasties have developed the meaning of ‘middle’ from the perspective of the relationships between heaven and man, a fundamental norm of Confucian ethics.
