His second book, Osmis, the Cursed Egyptian Maiden, ."is a trip through history that makes history fun to read." wrote one reader. Now, he has collected a second volume of short stories to rival the first book. Again we have writing contest winners among the many stories as well as Benjamin, the hard luck juvenile. Human-interest tales, crime, war and fairy tales are set into a variety of numerical groups and time frames. There are stories for some of the commandments, for each season, for each month, the days of the week, even a few for a minute of time. As in the first book the stories are intended for the reader with a little time to kill in the doctor's waiting room, the airport, in the car waiting for the kids to finish practice or get out of school or just to spend some leisure time. Not to give plots away, but just imagine a complete story in four sentences, with a reversed ending you didn't expect. Or being so familiar with the characters in a story that you never thought it could end differently, but it does. Be prepared to enjoy the unexpected, convoluted endings to some stories, then, when you think you know what's coming...No. I'm not going to spoil it for you.

Often times the smaller the man, the harder the punch--this adage was true in the case of diminutive Luke Short, whose brief span of years played out in the Wild West. His adventures began as a teenage cowboy who followed the trail from Texas to the Kansas railheads. He then served as a scout for the U.S. Army during the Indian wars and, finally, he perfected his skills as a gambler in locations that included Leadville, Tombstone, Dodge City, and Fort Worth. In 1883, in what became known as the "Dodge City War," he banded together with Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and others to protect his ownership interests in the Long Branch Saloon--an event commemorated by the famous "Dodge City Peace Commission" photograph. The irony is that Luke Short is best remembered for being the winning gunfighter in two of the most celebrated showdowns in Old West history: the shootout with Charlie Storms in Tombstone, Arizona, and the showdown against Jim Courtright in Fort Worth, Texas. He would have hated that. During his lifetime, Luke Short became one of the best known sporting men in the United States, and one of the wealthiest. He had been a partner in the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, as well as the White Elephant in Fort Worth. He became friends with other wealthy sporting men, such as William H. Harris, Jake Johnson, and Bat Masterson, who helped broaden his gaming interests to include thoroughbred horse racing and boxing. Before he died he would become a familiar figure in Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans, and Saratoga Springs, where he raced his string of horses. He traveled with other wealthy sporting men in private railroad cars to attend heavyweight championship fights. Luke Short was always a little man dealing in big games. He married the beautiful Hattie Buck, who could turns heads at all the top resorts they visited as man and wife. Jack DeMattos and Chuck Parsons have researched deeply into all records to produce the first serious biography of Luke Short, revealing in full the epitome of a sporting man of the Wild West.

CHUCK HINES enjoyed a 40-year career with the YMCA, during which he was a strong advocate of the Olympic sport of water polo. He was a three-time All-America player, and he coached teams at three YMCAs that won national championships. His teams all started out at the beginning level, in small pools and with insufficient equipment, and fought their way to the top. This book is the story of those teams and their rags to riches achievements. The author has written two instructional texts on water polo and has served as chairman of national committees for the Amateur Athletic Union, American Swimming Coaches Association, and YMCA of the USA. He was an officer of the U.S. Olympic Water Polo Committee for the Games of 1972, which found the American men bringing home the bronze medal. His YMCA girls team won the gold medal at the Junior Olympics and competed at the World Womens Water Polo Club Championships in 1977. In recent years, he has been a historian for the sport, writing numerous articles for the YMCAs national magazine and the Water Polo Planet web-site. Now retired and a member of the Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, Mr. Hines and his wife Lee and family members reside in Asheville, North Carolina.
