My Impossible Dream is a testament to the impact one person has on the lives of many, to the tremendous good one can bring about whatever the chosen path, to the responsibility each of us carries to make a positive difference in this world. Do they still make men like Chuck Randall? He was a solid strength of character, holding to his principles, enforcing no drinking and no smoking among his players. His rules were as much a challenge then as they are now and contributed to his incredible wins on the basketball courts. But what mattered most was the respect he gave his players as individuals and as equal partners on the team. They were all one, working toward the same goal, no one more important than another, each fully supporting the other and giving his all. It is no wonder that the respect he gave returned to him a hundredfold.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Chuck Thompson, with the assistance of veteran Associated Press sportswriter Gordon Beard, shares a personal play-by-play account of his celebrated career and life in this newly updated paperback edition of Ain't the Beer Cold! Since his broadcasting beginnings fresh out of high school in 1939, Thompson has served with the Armed Forces in World War II, relaxed as a one-man audience for a crooning Bing Crosby, and done sportscasting for the Phillies, A's, Senators, and Orioles. In 1993, Thompson's broadcasting achievement was honored with a place in the Broadcasters' Wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here he offers a delightful and insightful perspective on his profession, its people, and its place in the heart of American sports.
For those players who remain, the scars still run deep when it comes to the infamous “Ice Bowl,” played December 31, 1967, between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. There are players even today who suffer the ravages of frostbite and lung damage from a game many of the players never thought should have been played. As one player said, “It was just too damn cold. Who plays football in that weather?” But play they did in the minus 45 degree wind-chill (that dropped to 65 below by the end of the game) because the NFL championship, and a spot in the second Super Bowl, was on the line. What resulted was a game that has become part legend, part myth. There are a thousand stories from players and fans alike about a game that, 50 years later, remains embedded in NFL lore because of its sheer drama. Everyone remembers the remarkable way the Packers won, capping off a decade-long dynasty. The Cowboys, meanwhile, used the game as a building block that would propel them into NFL domination for 20 years. But what few remember is that this was. In every way imaginable, a game of survival, pitting man against the worst nature could deliver. This is a story about a football game, the men who played it, the people who watched it, those who were inspired by it and it’s a story, even a half century later, that remains unforgettable.
The collection of commentaries, essays and articles that comprise the main part of this publication are pen pictures that result from the focus of a distinguished son of the Caribbean Lloyd Best through his unique lens, on the thinking and actions of some Caribbean persons considered influential. The lens chosen is a composite one that was constructed more than three decades ago and perfected over that time. The publication emphasizes the need to distrust and abhor automatic imitation of western scientism and western propaganda if one is to be able to understand and prescribe for the affairs of the Caribbean, in other words it advocates the eschewing of automatic mimicry in things technological or otherwise. The publication offers a selection of essays as our Caribbean forest of memes to savour. In true Caribbean style it is a forest of mixed species and therefore a source of exquisite laminates for the furniture of regional development. This peek offered by this publication into some of the minds of our great Caribbean intellectuals through the window of one such mind, will contribute significantly to the nurturing of thought, the strengthening resolve to understand the Caribbean and to contribute to its continued development.

From its inception, The Integrationist publications have sought to invite regional scholarship, rigorous research and to draw upon the inestimable depth of writings of the regions intellectuals, academics and technical experts on various development perspectives, policy options, analyses and recommendations relative to the Caribbean Communitys integration process and its overall development agenda. In so doing, The Integrationist offers a rich resource and reference point for Caribbean leaders, policymakers and, ultimately, the regional citizenry on integration, on unique problems faced by the region, on current realities and solutions or options from which the region may choose on its path to development.
Jesse Lee Hall (1849-1911) was one of many young men seeking a new life following the Civil War, when he left North Carolina to find adventure in Texas. After a stint as a deputy sheriff and a Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Representatives, he joined Captain Leander McNelly’s Texas Ranger Special State Troops in 1876. This was the career move that he had needed as he soon found enough action in South Texas. When McNelly could no longer command due to illness, Hall was named to take his place. Hall was involved in arresting King Fisher and his gang, and he (with a small squad) arrested seven of the Sutton faction, effectively ending the bloody Sutton-Taylor Feud. One of his men, John B. Armstrong, finally captured the most wanted man in Texas, John Wesley Hardin, in far-off Florida. In 1878 Hall took part in the gun battle ending the career of outlaw Sam Bass. Nearing his fiftieth birthday, Hall hoped to join Teddy Roosevelt’s “Rough Riders,” but that did not happen. Instead he was posted to the Philippines, where as a commander during the Philippine Insurrection he was so badly injured that he was given a medical discharge. The old warrior died in San Antonio in 1911, loved and respected, having a reputation equaled by few.
The papers which comprise this publication, The Caribbean Community: The Struggle for Survival represents the Editor's choice from among thousands of articles, books and other commentaries that have provided clear and reasoned responses and solutions to inform and guide Caribbean leadership and the people of the Region. They also take a comprehensive look at regional intergration and serve as a guide to those with an interest in following the development in the Carribean Community. The book offers prescriptions for our success as a Community which are predicated on advice regarding what our political leaders should do in a normal context of the evolution of the Community. These prescriptions are based on sound scholarship and competent analysis. The book is an invaluable addition to the existing literature on Caribbean integration and should be part of any compendium on the study of the subject.
On July 4, 2009, the region celebrated thirty-six years as a formal Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The analyses contained in this publication in the The Integrationist Series all tend to suggest that CARICOM now, more than ever, needs to transform its experiences over these years into a more structured foundation for maximising the multiplier effects of collective representation, and for leveraging CARICOMs diplomatic efforts and resources in a more coordinated and integrated manner. This imperative is necessitated by the rapidly changing international environment which has far too often impacted negatively on small developing countries, leaving them increasingly vulnerable and marginalized.
Paradigm Shifts & Structural Changes - in Pursuit of Progress in the Caribbean Community This publication consists of a significant number of scholarly papers from eminent Caribbean Intellectuals and academics, committed to the advancement of regional integration. It encapsulates articles which represent views on CARICOM, covering a wide spectrum of issues from conception, through current trials and tribulations, into bold peeks into the future. The contribution by the late Hon. Best and Dr. St. Cyr, is particularly interesting as it dares to try to impose paradigm shifts on both the methodology to be used, and on the desirable destination to be sought, if future generations are not to decry the current generation for this myopia.
Foci of publications This publication is intended to be an invaluable tool to the avid researcher on Caribbean regionalism and related subjects. The range of papers presented, probe areas such as the institutional development of one of the most enduring economic integration systems in the international community, the workings of its major institutions and indeed its very survival. The importance of record keeping to the survival of any institution or major grouping is the message that permeates this volume given its role in enabling an understanding of our past and in the holistic development and preservation of the region’s cultural identity.
The tragedy of gun violence is depicted in annotated illustrations that illuminate a society gone hamn; from legendary hip-hop artist Chuck D (Public Enemy, Prophets of Rage, etc.) —Selected for the In the Margins Book Awards 2024 Nonfiction Recommendation List "With his latest work of graphic nonfiction, Chuck D uses his art and hip-hop rhymes to show how the US has been held hostage by gun violence and a growing sense of hopelessness . . . A focused, fresh, urgent text filled with pictures worth 1,000 words and rhymes worth thousands more." —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review IN SUMMER OF HAMN, legendary hip-hop artist Chuck D takes on gun violence with rhythmic, inventive writing and passionately raw art. He has long spoken out against gun violence, including how it intersects with rap and hip-hop culture. Summer of Hamn is the bound journal Chuck D carried with him in the summer of 2022—a summer marked by a particularly high rate of gun death. In these pages, victims are memorialized, politicians are skewered, and vehement pleas to eradicate gun violence are made. Jaw-dropping statistics (40% of all personal guns in the world are owned by US citizens; there are 100 million more guns in the US than there are citizens) intersect with poetic reflections ("Another mall shooting seems normalized in Columbus / Raining outside in Ohio / Raining inside folks panic / Inside hearing shots bust"), all written in Chuck's hand over vibrant, utterly original, neoexpressionist ink and watercolor art. This book is the follow-up to STEWdio the debut trilogy on Chuck D's Enemy Books imprint, in which he invented a new medium—the "naphic grovel"—a bound journal brimming with his observations and reflections of current events in both art and prose. Summer of Hamn is the second release on the imprint.
Hall of fame football writer Chuck Heaton looks back at his 47 years covering the Cleveland Browns. Heaton spent an incredible five decades covering the Browns—the “old Browns” teams that fans still miss. He reported on the Browns for the Plain Dealer from 1946 to 1993—nearly the entire history of the original Cleveland franchise. In this series of memoirs, written shortly before his retirement, Heaton reminisces about the great players he got to know, like Jim Brown, Otto Graham, and Leroy Kelly; masterful head coach Paul Brown; colorful characters like equipment manager Morrie Kono; even notorious Browns rivals like Oilers’ coach Jerry Glanville and Steelers’ owner Art Rooney. He recalls the relaxed atmosphere of training camp at Hiram College, and shares tales of life on the road with the team (including some memorably bad hotels). If you’re a Browns fans who remembers the old teams, you’ll fondly recall the glory days in these old-fashioned, personal stories. If you’re a younger Browns fan, you’ll find out why everyone still longs for them.

Chuck D (Public Enemy, Prophets of Rage, etc.) brings his personal insights and social critiques to the page in fierce, passionate, and evocative visual art and prose "The Public Enemy mastermind combines art and hip-hop rhymes to provide his compelling, personal views on the chaotic years between 2020 and 2022. Though they often feel like diary entries, each installment has an overarching storyline and theme . . . In an engaging, distinctly hip-hop style, Chuck D reveal important lessons from the early pandemic years." —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review Legendary hip-hop artist and social activist Chuck D has used every opportunity in his groundbreaking career to stand up for civil rights. His rap group Public Enemy is widely regarded as a revolutionary act both in terms of its impact on hip-hop and its use of music to impart a message of race and class equality. The band emerged from the late 1970s/early '80s coalescence of rap, punk, and street art into hip-hop music culture on the East Coast. At the time, Chuck D had completed his BFA in graphic design, and while his music career exploded, his passion for visual art never left his heart. In February 2020, he turned his gaze once again to the page, and began to fill three 5 x 8 journals with his written and drawn reflections of a world beginning to unravel. STEWdio: The Naphic Grovel ARTrilogy of Chuck D recreates format of his original art, combining three full-color paperback bound books into a beautiful box set. The box set is the inaugural offering from Enemy Books, the new Akashic Books imprinted curated by Chuck D. Spanning the onset of COVID-19 through the first year of the Joe "Bye-Don" administration, Chuck D lends his powerful artistic voice to one of the most tumultuous periods in American history, and puts it in a capsule. Like the neo-expressionist graffiti art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chuck D's energetic "Naphic Grovels" marry text with drawings, commenting on contemporary events with the same activist instinct that propelled Public Enemy's "music-with-a-message" reputation. His inventive, Amiri Baraka–esque language and accompanying art is also occasionally used as a tool for introspection, providing unparalleled insight into one of the most important cultural figures of our time. Each journal follows a distinct period in Chuck D's (and America's) life; There's a Poison Goin On chronicles the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, from February–April 2020; 45 Daze of REaD Octobot follow the days leading up to and the aftermath of the historic 2020 election; and Datamber Mindpaper, which focuses on the early days of the Biden administration. No song may be more reflective of 1980s America than Public Enemy's "Fight the Power;" no document may come to capture our COVID era like Chuck D's STEWdio.
The "New York Times" bestseller by actor, activist, and martial arts expert Norris urges Americans to recapture a national spirit of faith, freedom, and respect for tradition, history, and human life.
Let’s say you’re the coach of the Green Bay Packers, deciding which players should start in a Super Bowl matchup against the toughest team in the AFC. But instead of choosing from the current roster, you have every player in the team’s 100-year history in your locker room. Who starts at quarterback: the steady field general Bart Starr, gunslinger Brett Favre, or cannon-armed Aaron Rodgers? At outside linebacker, do you play Hall of Famer Dave Robinson, Lombardi-favorite Dan Currie, current All Pro Clay Matthews, or another player from the team’s deep roster? Which players get the start at wide receiver? Donald Driver, James Lofton, Sterling Sharpe, Max McGee, Jordy Nelson, or Antonio Freeman? Combining career stats, common sense, and a host of intangibles, veteran sportswriter Chuck Carlson imagines an embarrassment of riches and sets the all-time All-Pro Packer lineup for the ages.
