This edition is an arrangement of the original work, scored for oboe and orchestra, and has been arranged to work as a stand-alone recital piece but also functions as a rehearsal tool for the orchestral version. Influenced by Greek dance music, Hatzis' concerto for oboe and orchestra showcases virtuosic oboe performance through a blend of exotic and exciting music based on Mediterranean and Eastern European dance forms. Each of the three movements centres on a style of dance: chiftetelli, a common dance form originating from the Eastern Mediterranean; a passacaglia based on a 9-beat rhythmic pattern known in Greece as a zeibekiko (an improvised dance characterised by sudden and unexpected movements); and a common Balkan folk dance. Throughout the work, Hatzis references tonal modes characteristic of Turkish and Arabic music, which he first encountered in the Greek night-clubs of Toronto while working as a young composer in local bands. As such, this work reveals aspects in the genesis of Hatzis' eclectic style of music. Professional and advancing oboists alike will soar and exhilarate audiences with this work.

This is a unique book that combines a political narrative with poetry to examine the role of culture and the fusion of religion and politics during the struggle against colonialism. The context is Britain’s geopolitical interests in the Middle East. The author utilizes a vital cultural source echoing the authentic voice of the people, Cypriot folk poems, which has remained virtually unknown to the English reader until now. Translated into English, they are interwoven into the book’s narrative to reflect the yearning for social justice and the political sentiments of the vast majority of the population, the peasants, in a rural society. Lawrence Durrell’s literary masterpiece, Bitter Lemons, his politico-cultural chronicle on British-ruled Cyprus, is also discussed critically. The Greek Orthodox Church led the anti-colonial movement revolving around union with Greece. Through his intimate knowledge of Greek Orthodox practices, the author elucidates how religious customs and rituals were intertwined with the nationalist ideology to lead to political mobilization. In the process, culture, with its religious underpinnings, shaped politics. This dynamic has been the case from the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa, to Eurasia and South East Asia. Prime examples are the Iranian revolution and the more recent Arab Spring, both of which caught the West by surprise. In Cyprus, the British, with their sense of superiority, remained alien to the local culture and discounted popular sentiment. The two rebellions that ensued caught Britain totally by surprise. This is a valuable case study on the convergence of religion and politics. Academics, students and non-specialists will find a captivating narrative on Britain’s colonial encounter in an idyllic but strategic island in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In recent years, entropy has been used as a measure of the degree of chaos in dynamical systems. Thus, it is important to study entropy in nonlinear systems. Moreover, there has been increasing interest in the last few years regarding the novel classification of nonlinear dynamical systems including two kinds of attractors: self-excited attractors and hidden attractors. The localization of self-excited attractors by applying a standard computational procedure is straightforward. In systems with hidden attractors, however, a specific computational procedure must be developed, since equilibrium points do not help in the localization of hidden attractors. Some examples of this kind of system are chaotic dynamical systems with no equilibrium points; with only stable equilibria, curves of equilibria, and surfaces of equilibria; and with non-hyperbolic equilibria. There is evidence that hidden attractors play a vital role in various fields ranging from phase-locked loops, oscillators, describing convective fluid motion, drilling systems, information theory, cryptography, and multilevel DC/DC converters. This Special Issue is a collection of the latest scientific trends on the advanced topics of dynamics, entropy, fractional order calculus, and applications in complex systems with self-excited attractors and hidden attractors.

Although this relationship is widely recognized, it has been studied in little depth. For this reason, this volume of Cuadernos wants to delve into the studies that Peirce did on the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle, Epicureanism, and Stoicism, but it also wants to put the proposal of the North American thinker in dialogue with those of those ancient philosophers. The researches published here are not only limited to review ing Peirce's studies on Greek and Roman philosophers, nor to reveal the influences of ancient thinkers on the North American thinker, but also, in several cases, the scope and validity of those studies and interpretations are evaluated.
