In 1776 Adam Smith (1723-90) wrote The Wealth of Nations , a book so foundational it has led to him being called the 'father of economics'. Today he is associated with the promotion of self-interest, a defence of greed and a criticism of any governmental 'interference' in market transactions which, if left to the 'invisible hand', will produce prosperity and liberty. Yet if Smith is actually read these associations are more a caricature than a faithful portrait. In this Very Short Introduction, Christopher Berry offers a balanced and nuanced view of this seminal thinker, embedding his fierce defence of free trade, competition, and assault on special interests in contemporary European history, politics, and philosophy. As Berry explores, Smith was far more than an economist. His book The Theory of Moral Sentiment, offered a complex account of ethics in the context of human social behaviour. His scope as a professor at the University of Glasgow, a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment, was extensive. Beyond courses in philosophy and jurisprudence he also gave classes covering history, literature, and language. In addition to his two major works he also wrote a pioneering study of the history of astronomy as an illustration of the motivations that drive humans to seek answers to questions. He produced, again derived from his Glasgow classroom, an analysis of the development of grammar and language. As Christopher Berry shows, Adam Smith was no narrow thinker, but rather one who produced not only one of the greatest books in the history of social science, but also a wide-ranging body of work that remains significant today. In this compelling and accessible account of the life and thought of the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), Professor Christopher J. Berry of the University of Glasgow argues that the belief in the uniformity of human nature was at the heart of Hume's thought. In this volume, Berry introduces classic 'Humean' themes including the evolution of social institutions as an unintended consequence of the pursuit of self-interest, the importance of custom and habit in establishing rules of just conduct, and the defence of commerce and luxury. The book reveals Hume as an original thinker, whose thought may be understood as a combination of various strands of conservatism, libertarianism and liberalism.

Extracorporeal circulation has become firmly established as an invaluable and routine adjunct to cardiac and vascular surgery. Since its introduction in 1953, the technique has evolved rapidly with advancing technology leading to improvements in and simplification of the equipment involved. Developments in the understanding and application of basic science have also had a huge impact as our understanding of the complex anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and pathophysiology of the heart continues to grow. It is these advances in both technology and science that form the basis of this fourth edition of Techniques in Extracorporeal Cirulation. The book continues to provide a comprehensive overview of the field, covering both established techniques for those new to the field of extracorporeal circulation, and current and future developments. It attempts to answer some of the innumerable practical problems associated with the routine use of artificial circulation and oxygenation, and hopes to stimulate thought and debate among its readers regarding more complex or controversial issues. Topics new to the fourth edition include robotic surgery and off-pump surgery, while other chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account developments and changes in the field. With its multidisciplinary approach, the book will remain an essential reference for all health care professionals working in the cardiac surgical operating room, in particular cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists and perfusionists.
This ground-breaking and innovative textbook offers a uniquely global approach to the study of social psychology. Inclusive and outward-looking, the authors consciously re-orientate the discipline of social psychology, promoting a collectivist approach. Each chapter begins with an illustrative scenario based on everyday events, from visiting a local health centre to shopping in a supermarket, which challenges readers to confront the issues that arise in today's diverse, multicultural society. This textbook also gives a voice to many indigenous psychologies that have been excluded from the mainstream discipline and provides crucial coverage of the colonization experience. By integrating core social psychology theories and concepts with critical perspectives, Social Psychology and Everyday Life provides a thought-provoking introduction suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of social psychology and community psychology. It can also be used by students in related subjects such as sociology, criminology and other social sciences.
David Hume, Adam Smith, William Robertson, Adam Ferguson, Lord Kames, John Millar, James Dunbar and Gilbert Stuart were at the heart of Scottish Enlightenment thought. This introductory survey offers the student a clear, accessible interpretation and synthesis of the social thought of these historically significant thinkers. Organised thematically, it takes the student through their accounts of social institutions, their critique of individualism, their methodology, their views of progress and of moral and cultural values. By taking human sociality as their premise, the book shows how they produced important analyses of historical change, politics and morality, together with an assessment of their own commercial society.
This lavishly illustrated operative atlas consists of detailed, step-by-step descriptions of the procedures used in reconstruction of the female urinary tract from the kidney to the urethra. The basic principles underlying reconstrucive urology are outlined and emphasis is placed on the fact that the logic of each procedure is dictated by a thorough understanding of the particular functional abnormality involved. In addition there is a wealth of practical tips, observations and clinical pearls built up over many years of surgical experience which help to reduce complications and make operations easier. Each operative procedure is described by a sequence of colour photographs with running captions explaining the pitfalls and points of particular importance at each stage. The meditative prayer practices known as Hesychasm and the Jesus Prayer have played an important role in the history of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. This book explores how these prayer practices have spread from a primarily monastic setting within Orthodox Christianity, into general Orthodox Christian usage, and finally into wider contemporary Western culture. As a result of this gradual geographic shift from a local to a global setting, caused mainly by immigration and dissemination of related texts, there has been a parallel shift of interpretation causing disagreement. By analyzing ongoing conversations on the practices, this book shows how such disagreements are due to differences in the way groups understand the ideas of authority and tradition. These fundamental ideas lie beneath much of the current discussion on particular aspects of the practices and also contribute to the wider academic debate over the globalization and appropriation of religious traditions.
