Codenames were a vital feature of World War II, serving as mental shorthand for those in the know, and obscuring the issues for those who were not. Codenames were used from the highest level, in the planning of grand strategic moves affecting the conduct of the whole war, to the lowest command divisions, in the conduct of small-scale tactical operations. This encyclopedia, first published in 1986, removes the mystery surrounding many of the important code names from the era. With around 3,000 entries drawn from all sides – the U.K., U.S.A., Germany, the U.S.S.R. and Japan – Christopher Chant’s work provides a uniquely comprehensive and full overview of major operations, names and code words. Thorough and exciting, this key reference reissue is an exceptionally valuable resource for military historians, enthusiasts and general readers with an interest in World War II.
Christopher Chant's The History of the RAF is an authoritative account of the RAF through the last 54 years, culminating in the Gulf War. Carefully integrated text and photographs highlight the linked development of the service and its aircraft

The anti-Communist government of South Vietnam sought American aid, and this grew steadily from technical support, weapons, and equipment, to the initial limited involvement of US forces to protect American interests. This opened the floodgates, and by the mid-1960s ever-larger numbers of US troops poured into South Vietnam as US air power struck at North Vietnam. The air arms of the United States Military form the most potent combined air force in the world, capable of defending the skies of the free world, engaging and destroying any hostile threat. The USAF has bases in every part of the globe, and these are supplemented by the Navy's fleet of floating airfields, the aircraft carriers. The Army and Marine Corps play a vital role in support of any troops they have in action in ground operations, as witnessed by the world in 1991 in the Gulf. This superbly illustrated volume describes each aircraft in current service and their specific operational roles with the four services: how the crews of these high-technology systems train for their respective missions, such as air defense, strike, or reconnaissance, what weapons and equipment they use, and how these already advanced systems are updated with the introduction of even newer technology to counter ever-changing threats. This book provides a running commentary on the modern military aircraft of the United States. Data panels provide aircraft specifications for the most important types, and full color photographs illustrate each aircraft.
The Linebacker strategic bombing offensive finally drove the North Vietnamese to the negotiating table and an accord was reached for the departure of the US forces. The USA was mightily relieved to be free of this commitment, but its failure in the Vietnam War was a body blow to US cohesion and belief in itself. Describes the history of railroads from the earliest wooden-wheeled carts used in mines to the railway networks and trains that developed around the world during the 19th century.
The Vietnam War constitutes a defining moment in modern history. Starting from a time soon after the Japanese surrender in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, and lasting to the North Vietnamese conquest of South Vietnam in 1975 to re-create a unified Vietnamese state, the war pitted the Communists of Vietnam, against a number of opponents. Those included first the French and second the South Vietnamese and Americans, the latter supported by a number of allies. During the Vietnam War the US had superior firepower and mobility. However, the Communist forces were prepared to accept great losses, while the US population was becoming increasingly disaffected by the rising casualty rate of their own forces, and the growing credibility gap between what they were being told by their government and what the media was reporting from South Vietnam. Since the creation of the standing army in 1661, when each regiment was known by the name of its current colonel, there have been many reforms and rationalizations of the British army. From 31 cavalry regiments and 113 infantry regiments in 1881, at the time of this title’s first publication in 1988, the army had reduced to just 16 regiments of armour and 39 regiments of infantry through processes of absorption and amalgamation. The Handbook of British Regiments provides insight into the lineage and history of the approximately 85 regiments and corps which formed the British army towards the end of the 1980s. Comprehensive in coverage, each has a separate entry giving factual details in a layout standardized for easy comparison, including current title, colonel-in-chief, uniform and history, amongst others. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, this handbook provides an accessible guide to specialists as well as lay enthusiasts, and illustrates a sense of the continuity and inherited tradition of each regiment and corps.
