This well-researched World War II novel is based on a true story from Medina, a small town between Buffalo and Rochester, New York. A husband and wife have one son. When World War II began, the son enlisted in the US Army Air Forces as a pilot. The flight training and combat sequences are detailed and accurate. Later, the son is listed as Missing In Action along with his entire crew and the B-17 bomber they were flying as part of an 8th Air Force mission over Czechoslovakia. The father and son have been the closest of friends and the loss and lack of information is unacceptable. The father vows to find his son as soon as the war is over. The story unfolds from that point. Follow the son, Allen Stefaniak, through college, romance, flying training and off to war. The story takes place in Western New York State; Chicago; Army bases in Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Maine; in England, North Africa, Germany, Sweden, and Russia. Will the father, Stanley, be reunited with his son? What adventures and frustrations will impede the search? Come along and find out. The story is panoramic in its scope and universal in its message. Christopher Scharping is beginning his fourth career. After a long Air Force career, fi rst as a medic and then as an Air Force Historian for the majority of his 20+ years of active duty, he worked for the US Postal Service in Buffalo, NY for a decade before becoming a History and Language Arts teacher in Florida. Now, he has turned his talents to his own writing. Since childhood in a small town in western New York State near Buffalo, he had always dreamed of traveling around the world and of fi nding a true love that would lead to “Happily Ever After”. The Air Force provided the means for world travel, which is prolifi cally illustrated in this book and in the next. The “love” proved to be much more diffi cult to attain and keep. He and his lovely wife Catherine currently live in Panama City, Florida and dream of returning to Colorado one day to live there again. As John Muir once said, “The Mountains Are Calling; I Must Go!”

In 1920, the US government, at the request mostly of a new army of female voters in America, turned off the tap that had served Americans cold beer and liquor. The Volstead Act made the sale of alcohol illegal throughout the forty-eight states. A nation surrounded by water rose up to provide. Liquor came ashore from all directions: the Pacific Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, the Atlantic Coast, and across the Great Lakes from Canada. Our story looks at the smuggling from Canada across Lake Ontario. Since colonial times, liquor had been brought legally and illegally, usually to sidestep the paying of taxes on the products. Now it was brought into the country to provide what the government had tried to take away. The Volstead Act inadvertently created a whole new smuggling system. New terms came into the general vocabulary: Prohibition agent, speakeasy, rum runners (who brought the illegal cargo in by water), and bootleggers (who drove the liquor along the nations roadways). Our story will be mainly focused on the rum runners, although the bootleggers will be represented as well. My grandfather, Charles Frederick Scharping, owned a farm on Lower Lake Road that bordered Lake Ontario. In 1955, my parents built a cottage on the farm at the edge of the lake. The spot where our cottage was located, on Scharping Lane, was the spot where rum runners would bring their illegal cargoes. They sold them to the bootleggers for cash. These rum runners braved over fifty miles of water from the shores of Orleans County to the pickup points along the Canadian shore. The return trips were challenged by weather, hijackers, and the US Coast Guard. Waves up to eight feet tall were common during the frequent storms. Many lost their lives. This Volstead Law lasted for twelve years. It was a bloody time where fortunes were made and lives lost.
