This book looks at Poland at the time of the war in Ukraine with an emphasis on the pertinent political philosophical reflection of its public scholars regarding the problem of the country’s moral rearmament—a major axiological challenge for the West and its member states in dangerous times. After initially looking at the sociopolitical context of the question in Poland, that is, the country’s response to the early phase of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as presenting the aggressive Russian empire together with the European Union as a normative empire, the main question is examined in the context of the Polish national community. Thus Poland is studied from several aspects of cultural and political philosophy, augmented by political theology, which provide potentially relevant resources to confront the challenge. From this perspective reflection on existing historical memory in Poland is presented that explains the survival of a tragic sensibility and can act as a counter to the historical amnesia that has been determined as a deterrent of the axiological task of moral rearmament, and plays an important part in a deeper reflection of the present dangerous times.

This book, intended primarily for researchers and advanced students, expands greatly on previous work by the authors exploring the topography of the multidimensional “functional-cognitive space” within which functional, cognitive and/or constructionist approaches to language can be located. The analysis covers a broad range of 16 such approaches, with some additional references to Chomskyan minimalism, and is based on 58 questionnaire items, each rated by 29 experts on particular models for their importance in the model concerned. These ratings are analysed statistically to reveal overall patterns of (dis)similarity across models. The questionnaire ratings and experts’ comments are then used, together with the authors’ close reading of the literature, in detailed discussion leading to a final dichotomous rating for each feature in each model, the results again being analysed statistically. The final chapter presents the overall conclusions and suggests how existing collaborations between approaches could be strengthened, and new ones created, in future research. Exploring Functional-Cognitive Space has been awarded the 2016 prize of the Spanish Association for Applied Linguistics (Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada, AESLA) for work by experienced researchers.

Through an online experiment that tested the effect of two different media identity frames on individual solidarity during the European debt crisis, the author argues that the exposure to news articles using a value-based identity frame boosts solidarity compared to an economic identity frame. Colposcopy has contributed significantly to knowledge about cervical cancer. Developed in Germany by Hans Hinselmann, it plays a significant role in the identification, early detection and treatment of cervical cancer. Dr Seidl is a pioneer of colposcopy and recognised early on the typical changes in the external and internal cervix over the course of a woman’s life and the colposcopic equivalents of the precursors of cervical carcinoma. As a gynaecologist (and pathologist), Dr Seidl has taken up the cause of early diagnosis of cervical carcinoma and its precursors. He is considered a protagonist of colposcopy in post-war Germany due to his experience in 60 years of work with many publications and further training at home and abroad (introduction of colposcopy in Africa). Dr. Seidl has made his extensive training material available to interested doctors in a special and unique form in the form of a colposcopy atlas: - For doctors who want to familiarise themselves with colposcopy for their practice. - For doctors who want to use the didactic teaching material, arranged according to the new nomenclature (Rio 2014), for their own further training. He has revised this book – now in its 4th edition with his co-author Dr Kossagk from AGCPC.de – in memory of his famous predecessors in German-speaking countries, such as Hinselmann, Ganse, Mestwerdt (Germany), Wespi (Switzerland) and Burghrdt (Austria) and in appreciation of this original German diagnostic method, and has added several innovations. For example, the photo and video material can now also be accessed online in streaming mode. The DVD originally used for this purpose has been abolished. In addition, new chapters have been included, with the chapters on peniscopy and mammilloscopy in particular falling outside the scope of a usual colposcopy book. The book is unique among colposcopy publications worldwide, as it covers the entire spectrum of gynaecological diagnostics with over 900 colour colposcopic illustrations and therapeutic video sequences. In addition to chapters on findings of the portio, vagina and vulva, new chapters such as functional colposcopy, mamilloscopy and peniscopy are presented in a thoroughly edited form. Of course, colposcopy is emphasised as playing an essential role in the early diagnosis of carcinoma and preliminary stages (dysplasias) in the genital area, with the difficult modern differential diagnosis facilitating the evaluation of findings. An important chapter is the colposcopic observation of the course of the disease, which often leads to a definitive diagnosis! In addition to these important tasks, there is – especially for doctors in practice – a broad diagnostic field in the context of the various inflammations (STD) and functional hormone-related changes in the genital area. A chapter on changes in the nipple highlights Paget’s disease and justifies the use of colposcopy. The new chapter on peniscopy is the first colposcopy book to discuss the role of men in sexually transmitted HPV infections and to propose modern early diagnosis (secondary prophylaxis). These statements are supported by years of experience in examinations of men and by convincing colposcopic images of carcinomas and its precursors.

For the greater part of the twentieth century, Ibbs and Tillett's concert agency was to the British music industry what Marks and Spencer is to the world of the department store. The roll-call of famous musicians on its books was unmatched, and included such international stars as Clara Butt, Fritz Kreisler, Pablo Casals, Sergei Rachmaninov, Andr Segovia, Kathleen Ferrier, Myra Hess, Jacqueline du Pr Clifford Curzon and Vladimir Ashkenazy, to name but a handful. From 1906, the success of the company was due to the dedication of its founders, Robert Leigh Ibbs and John Tillett. After their deaths, the agency was run by the latter's wife, Emmie, who, dubbed the 'Duchess of Wigmore Street', became one of the most formidable yet respected women in British music. The history of this unique institution and its owners is told here for the first time, often through the fascinating letters that were exchanged between the artists themselves and the agency. It begins in the latter years of the 19th century with the concert and theatrical manager Narciso Vert, for whom both Ibbs and Tillett worked until his death in 1905. The story then becomes a history of musical life in twentieth-century Britain, illuminating aspects of the day-to-day management of concerts and festivals, the lives and livelihoods of professional musicians, as well as those who strove to join their ranks through audition or recommendation. The changing profile, and particularly the onset and development of personal management of artists represented by Ibbs and Tillett and their reception in the press, can be viewed as a barometer of musical taste. Satellite measurements of precipitation are discussed. Examples of major past floods and droughts are given. Past and future climate change, which is included, underpins the importance of hydro-meteorological processes. The structure of the general circulation of the atmosphere and how it influences weather and climate including the Hadley, Ferrel and Polar cells, the Trade winds and the El Nino, is outlined. Finally, the influence of urban areas on rainfall formation, dealing with urban drainage and air quality are described. Each chapter ends with one or two specific points as appendices, elements discussed in the chapter and a list of sample problems to aid understanding. Readership: This book is aimed at 3rd year undergraduate and postgraduate students on hydrology/hydrometeorology, environmental science and geography courses. Professionals in environmental protection agencies and consultancies will also find the book of great interest.
